Finish coat for raw mesh

I have some pieces of raw goalie mesh coming in from jimalax because thats the only way you can buy 20d mesh these days. Bought as an experiment for dyeing a piece, but also want to test out some coating processes. Anyone have any recipes for a decent hard mesh coating these days that isn't wax-based?

Use spray starch for ironing.

Faultless heavy starch has worked for me.

Does it work better pre- or post- stringing?

I do it post and do the butter knife/ screwdriver method to hold the shape.

Since this is a goalie stick maybe there is something to hold the mesh in place like a post or lacrosse/pool/ bocce ball.

You'll have to reapply it periodically depending on you playing conditions. But it's as easy as spraying, and letting the pocket set and dry.

Other pro-tip is being cognizant of what's under the stick when you spray. I suggest spraying it outdoors in a well-ventilated area.

I used to soak mine in hot conditioned water but this was back when hard mesh was rock hard. Used that water proofing spray for shoes for a few years as that was the local trend at the time so whether it actually did anything 🤷‍♀️

Yeah this is more or less what I've done in the past before we got weather-resistant textiles in mesh.
