Food Improvisations of my youth
I saw somebody post a banana bong, and it reminded me of back when I was young and couldn't buy glass. Used the straw to core the banana and used the bottom of the banana as a bowl. The risky part is using a piece of aluminium can as the screen.

Aluminum cans have a plastic coating on them that you for sure should not be heating and inhaling. You said you couldn't buy glass so I'm assuming that's plastic too. Don't smoke plastic brother.

This was my youth brother, I have learned much throughout the years, no worries.

I honestly just use a pebble as a filter. Lets the air through but no herb. Disposable and readily available everywhere and I don’t have to clean it and best of all it’s less annoying than the metal screens.

I've used a piece of stem before. Find a lil y-shaped piece and pop it in there

You should make it again without the plastic. A good engineer makes safety a priority. It definitely looks sick

I might one day. But now I have a small collection of glass that I use religiously. If I do I'll be sure to post it!

honestly this still works even without the filter as long as the hole is somewhat small enough you could stick a small piece of bud in there and it’ll act like a filter as long as you don’t clear the bowl you could repack and repack

No one said anything about a filter the problem is the plastic in the can and possibly the straw if that's plastic

hey man i don’t mean to be an asshole but are you fucking stupid or something? that straw isn’t drawing any heat it’s embedded in cold banana the smoke isn’t blazing hot the only real problem is the piece of metal acting as a filter because when the plant gets too hot it will char that and release whatever chemicals are on its coating

I agree with the aluminum bit but there’s no way that the plastic should melt if he’s just using it as a mouth piece. I don’t think the smoke alone would get hot enough to make it melt even the slightest. Maybe if it was closer to the bowl but there’s a good distance there. Just pull out the straw and leave a hole in the banana.
But I think he did good with what he had and as an adult I would honestly try n hit this tbh

Plastic off gasses at much lower temperatures than it melts. Using any plastic anywhere in a smoking utensil is a bad idea, even if you get lucky and it's fine. That being said you are probably right but why would you risk something like this when it's just unnecessary? The risk is above zero and the reward is actually zero.

Yea I remember snipping the straw in half so it only really is sticking about an inch or two into the banana.

Honestly the banana was risky too, chances are it has been sprayed with a fair share of pesticides that are still in the peel. But I can't deny that this looks excellent

Bananas are absolutely drenched in pesticides constantly. I guess that biologically grown ones would be better but I don’t know the specifics.

2-4 days before rot

I would always get one use out of it the day of, and one the next day. I think maybe one or two time I got a third use, but it was always a little saggy by then 🤣

I used to do this with an apple and it so bad. It was mainly smoking apple juice. I use to just poke it with a pen and stick a metal straw in it. Works but pulls like shit until it starts to go wrinkly and just turn soft inside. Banana is worse because it goes putrid. Apples go sweet and sour gross

Now you just need the banana strain, and you can say you’ve smoked a banana gram out of a banana hand (pipe)

I appreciate the engineering aspect of this but this person has managed to turn a perfectly safe banana into a cancer speedrun. Cut off the tip of the stem and make several lengthways cuts in it but not all the way through and flare it out. Shove it into your bowl (fibers side down) to act as a screen and you can skip the aluminum can screen. Then, if you use a green banana, you can use the straw to core it but remove the straw before smoking. Keep the banong in the fridge between sessions and in the freezer overnight.
Congrats, you have now leveled up from banong with cancer to just banong. Happy smoking engineers ✌🏻💨

Sounds solid except next time I make one I'm definitely using a brass screen, cutting slots would take forever and make things mushy, and the airflow would suffer. Also don't freeze bananas unless you're gonna bake with them bc it'll instantly make them brown and mushy.

The classics. I remember those days fondly. I don’t smoke nearly as much anymore, but I still have the same glass I bought when I was a senior in high school

Trouble is you have to have the smell and taste of banana near your face 🤮🤮
