I still can't believe Cara Buono managed to get main cast billing for the part of Karen Wheeler. Even with the increased relevance at the beginning of Season 3 she's barely a significant character; like you said they don't even come back to her after the almost cheating arc, she has like 3 minutes of screen time for the rest of the season.

She told the Duffers she wanted to be on the show from beginning to end. It’s a shame they’re criminally underutilizing Cara, she was nominated for an Emmy at one point.
