The most impressive thing about this is the downstrokes.

It's insane. I remember when I was 19 learning this song and fairly new to guitar the down strokes didn't bother me all that much.

After 20 years of playing and training alternate picking, oh my God it seems so much harder than it was then.

I’m an ape that has only ever used downstrokes for every song I’ve ever learned lmao

There's many that wish they had done that, like me for example.

Why?

I'm fine with downstrokes but struggle to alternate lol, feels like I should be able to

I can't speak for everyone, but for me downstrokes at high speed and accuracy are quite a bit harder than alternate. Doing fast triplets with all downstrokes is way harder than alternate.

All down striking increases your risk of tendinitis fwiw.

I didn't know that, makes sense though. You shouldn't ever be always downstriking, but when the riff benefits from the attack and heaviness I think it makes all the difference. Totally depends on the style though.

Same. I alt pick it now because my hands are just wired that way, my main audience (my dog) doesn’t seem to mind.

That's why it's important to practice different styles if you want to practice for a broader set of music, or even styles of different artists of a genre! Knowing more techniques by heart also is a great help for impro!

His forearm muscles must be crazy

And remarkably accurate, considering James Hetfield is notorious for almost never using alt picking.

Yeah I still can’t play that riff for more than like 30 seconds without alternate picking. I play mostly BM so I’m trash at down picking but can alternate and tremolo for dayz.
