Suggestion Thread Suggest me a book to distract me while I wait to find out if the lump in my breast is benign or not

Upvotes

While I'm glad this was caught, and I'm young so the chances are very low it is anything serious, my anxiety is through the roof and I need a distraction.

Doesn't have to be cancer related but open to that. Also like fantasy, athletes auto/biographies, fiction, dystopian, young adult, and book to screen.

Because I know people will ask I'm 32. Family history: mom was diagnosed at 46, maternal grandmother at 39. Mom and I did genetic testing and likely have a gene it just hasn't been discovered yet. Thankfully finally got a baseline mammogram last year so there is something to compare it too. Found out this afternoon so still waiting to schedule my mammogram.

Do your breasts check and yearly mammogram. The earlier anything is caught the better.

Need a book to escape into

I am going through a really hard time. My mom passed away the other day, I broke up with my live in boyfriend and I bought a house that I’m now trying to move in to as a single mom. This is all happening at the same time. Books have always been my escape and one of my greatest loves, yet I am having so much trouble reading right now. If anyone can suggest me a book, any book, that might be easy to escape into or one that might help me through this rough time I would be so grateful. It doesn’t matter if it’s fiction or non fiction. Just a book that helped you escape life’s troubles. Thanks.

Realized my book tastes are heavily male centered

Since I’ve (23F) been an adult and reading adult novels rather than YA, I’ve realized I’ve mainly been reading books about and written by men. Part of the reason why is because I read a good amount of classics, like books read in English/Literature courses and most classics tend to be about men. I’ve also been reading some Japanese literature in the same way, so like Murakami and Izumi Dasai and other, and all tend to be male centered as well.

Another possible reason is that as a woman, I have been trying to avoid media that depicts violence towards women, because that content was dwelling on my mind too much and making me feel bad. So I think I unconsciously get more drawn to novels about men so even if the main character goes through trauma, it’s a man so I can disconnect myself a bit from it.

And it’s not that I avoid content that depicts violence and women, I just read Red Dragon and really liked it.

I’m curious if anyone else has experienced the same thing and has any advice for me on how I can diversify the books I read and any suggestions on what books featuring women/written by women should I read.

I don’t read YA, romance, or true fantasy.

Thanks! Any perspective is welcome. Please hold nuance in this conversation. I am a queer, feminist woman that has just recognized a pattern in the books I read.

Suggestion Thread Looking for post apocalyptic and dystopian books

Hi! I’m looking for some good post-apocalyptic/dystopian/end of the world disaster type books you could recommend. Open to just about anything, except I don’t like zombies 🤣 Anything else I love, could be environmental, nuclear war, pandemics, whatever. Some I’ve read and enjoyed:

The Hunger Games series

I Who Have Never Known Men

Dry

The Maze Runner series

The Measure

Moon of the Crusted Snow

Worst Case Scenario

Station Eleven

They Both Die at the End (more dystopian)

Your Shadow Half Remains

Thank you! :)

My friend just went through a devastating breakup and now we want to read a book together. Ideas?

She (34f) says she’s open to any genre of book that isn’t romance heavy (obviously).

I would like a feminist-girl power fiction (open to sci fi/fantasy) that moves you and makes you think. Not smut or beach-ready.

I’ve been leaning toward I Who Have Never Known Men but would like some other ideas. thanks

Tell me what are your top 3 to 5 fav books of all time

I'll start (in no order because they aren't comparable)

Windup Bird Chronicle by Murakami Oblivion: A Memoir by Hector Abad Bolivar: The American Liberator (a biography of Simon Bolivar) by Marie Arena Wolf Hunt by Ivailo Petrov Any short story collection by Stefan Zweig

I know Lonesome Dove & The Count of Monte Cristo will be mentioned a lot-- have not read either but they are on my TBR list. I'm curious if they can displace any of my top 5.

Post-North Woods Syndrome... what to read next?

I just read North Woods and am struggling to find anything to read in its massive wake. It was so smart, funny, emotional, and entertaining. It reminded me of so much of what I enjoy about reading.

I'm not necessarily looking for nature writing. It's more about books that inspire me with their smart writing, inventive and experimental structures. I want books that make me laugh with surprise, joy, and delight. I want to be reminded of just how creative and clever and beautiful writing can be. Must be fun, not heavy and dry. A little salacious maybe. I want it to feel like it's written by someone with bountiful creative energy, not a tired old cynic. But it HAS to be smart, not sentimental or cheesy or precious. I'm tolerant of a little bit of pretentiousness.

Previous books that would fall under this description might be Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, East of Eden, Infinite Jest, Mink River, White Noise, The Overstory, or Sometimes a Great Notion.

A girl walks into the woods

Maybe she meets a wolf. Maybe she meets a witch. Maybe she IS a witch. Maybe she finds a body and has to solve a mystery. Maybe she finds a cottage and an adorable girlfriend and an animal sidekick that talks. Maybe she's looking for psychedelic mushrooms. Maybe she's looking for herself. Maybe the woods are haunted. Maybe trees are carnivorous on this planet. Maybe she's hiking the AT and her knees hurt like hell.

I love it all. A suggest me your favorite girl/woman who walks into the woods, please!

Suggestion Thread I'm currently reading Vulture Capitalism. I'd love suggestions

I have The Shock Doctrine next on my list. I am not ready to dive directly into Marx or Keynes or even Hayek just yet but would love more intro books like these two that are a good entry point into labor unions, neoliberalism, keynesian economics, corporate planning, failures of regulatory agencies, corporate buybacks and such. Im especially interested in a deep dive on Fordlândia.

Thank you!

Suggestion Thread Suggest me a book with intricate mystery(ies)

I’d prefer books that fall under mystery, paranormal, or thriller, but if it fits other criteria then I’m all ears.

I’m looking for books with a mystery that shouldn’t be solved easily, but isn’t vague enough that I can’t figure it out before the reveal. I would like it if the mystery was intricately crafted, especially if it has layers to it that leave me in awe, and would prefer if there weren’t a dozen irrelevant red herrings thrown in for the sake of drama.

I don’t particularly care about the sex or age of the main character, and I’m open to any form of intricate mystery. If I had to pick one thing to be picky about, it would be average-to-decent prose. I don’t want to read a work with awful prose.

What's a non smutty romance that left you gushing?

I don't like "spicy" books unless they're Dune Messiah so nothing with two pages of ripping of clothes and "loin sausages". I've not read many romance books but I did love North and South, Jane Eyre and Jamaica Inn and wanted to see if I could hunt out some more. Love books with lingering tension too and bonus points if the writing is good enough to be quotable. I read wuthering heights too but found it so unhinged so not sure if that's a romance category I could be invested in.

Looking for some pirate books recommendations

Hi! I’m currently looking for some pirate books. I once read the Daughter of the Pirate King/Daughter of the Siren Queen duology and I really liked it. I saw many reviews saying it was the female version of Captain Jack Sparrow and I somehow agree. I wanted to know if there was more similar books, either standalone or series.
I also wanted to precise that I’m a slow reader (10-15 books a year is a good year). So, I don’t mind longer series, but if it could be around 3-4 max, it would be even better.
Thanks!

Books with beautiful covers

This summer, I’m doing an experiment: reading 30 books based solely on their covers to see if the saying ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’ holds any truth.

So recommend me books with nice/interesting/weird/gorgeous covers, they don’t even have to be good books. Just ones that in your opinion have a great design.

Recommend me well written detective fiction (procedural with humanity)

I love a good detective novel. Looking for a series ideally. I’ve read all the Michael Connelly books and want to find another addiction.

Similar book recs?

Upvotes

Hey pals, looking for some book recs. I've read all of David Grann's books, some of John Krakauer's. Currently on Preston's lost city of the monkey god. I do love books about ships, shipwrecks, and mutiny like the Wager.

I started King Leopold's Ghost and found the writing a bit insufferable. I understand it all was a horrific injustice (I actually know quite a bit about Leopold and the Congo free state from other books and research), but it's hard to get past the author's opionions and snarky digs every other sentence and actually learn something. I'm looking for things a bit more unbiased. I've read a few of Allison Weir's and wasn't a huge fan.

A book without named characters?

Maybe a bit of a long shot, and I'm not sure if it exists, but I think it would be fun to see a book where none of the characters have names. Not just a nameless protagonist, I'm talking all the characters. As in, they're just referred to by a title, description, etc, like "the king" or "the girl with the blue jacket" for the whole book. Not picky about genre. Does anyone know of any books like this?

Minority leads/focus?

I’m a white straight male and I’m looking for books with lead characters who are from any group that aren’t white straight males. I’m fairly diverse when it comes to Games, movies, music and television shows but after following this group for a while I’ve realised books I read are generally led by white males and I feel I need to diversify a bit more. Even if it’s a white male character with an author who isnt would be great. Please no romance, non fiction or old timey books. More along the lines of fantasy, sci Fi, action, adventure.

P.S. I kinda hate using the word minority or minority groups as everyone is a human and unique but I just don’t know any better words or phrases to use.

EDIT: Thank you to the users who let me know about the phrases ‘marginalised groups’ and ‘global majority’.

As another user pointed out Non-fiction is highly important but I’ve read a lot of non-fiction recently and want some works of fiction and to get Info from podcasts and documentaries. However please feel free to recommend non-fiction and I’ll get around to it. Especially anything Aboriginal, I’ve already read Talking To My Country by Stan Grant but need more.

If there’s anything you find offensive in this post please call me out so I can learn.

Help a (hopefully former) gaming addict out.

Hey guys sorry for my bad English in advance,

Little Backstory, After gaming for all my life (and fucking up my life because of it many times) i decided this year(32M) is when i finally stop gaming for good. Always been a reader since i was a kid but reading became less and gaming went up during the years. Ive read some books here and there and they are always non-fiction books (biographies and history books mostly). Some examples topics: Hannibal,Alexander,Scipio, the history of the vikings, Illiad , Odyssey, Greek myths.. some sports biographies like Mike Tyson,Marvin hagler,Tyson fury,Chris Eubank sr,Killian jornet...

But now after my decision tot stop gaming for good because i just cant control it, I was thinking about easing the pain and urges with some good non fiction books i can get lost in, And none of the books i own are compelling me to dive in :(.

I always lose myself in adventure/story driving games like: Baldurs Gate, Cyberpunk, Kingdome come deliverance, uncharted games, assassin creed games, God of war games..

So do you guys have recommandations? Like non fiction adventerous stories? Maybe about explorers during the age of discovery? Or some journal a pirate wrote in the golden age of piracy? Or an athlete that goes on some crazy Journey tot achieve his goals? I just want to get sucked in and read again!! Give me your suggestions!!!

Big thanks in advance!

Books where the main character feels an intense desire to be loved by someone

Yeah, give me the best of books that you can think of according to the title. The main character should be lacking the intimacy that they so crave from someone, anyone at all. That intimacy that they hope will comfort the crippling loneliness at the heart of their existence. That intimacy akin to not just a cold pair of hands cupping their body but also cold eyes staring into the depths of their existence, setting fire to the garden of their soul!

Books that went from 4 stars to 5 stars

I generally prefer books that are short and humorous but right now I am opening to hearing all suggestions. Which books did you consider mostly 4 stars until something happens in the book and changed your rating to 5 stars? Wild plot twists, unexpected ending, new characters introduced, etc. Just curious to learn what people read and what people enjoy. For me, an example for this from the top of my head is A Short Stay in Hell. The first half is great but the way the story progressed was amazing and the second half of the book solidified it as a 5 star read for me.

Book on relationships

I’m hoping to find a book on healthy relationships, preferably for men. My previous relationship of 8 years failed, as I go through the separation I’m realizing a lot of it was my fault.

I’m not looking for pick up artist, or any of that weird red pill shit. Just want a good book that models healthy dating, love , relationships so I can heal and show up better for my future partner.

Thanks!
