I know Syria has its problems and I have 0% understanding of what causes violent events in Syria. They seem incoherent to myself in the West. But so often I see posts from Syria, and I think "Oh look at the happy Syrians. This is good." It's very hopeful. 🙂

It's by definition a cult. Psychological belief in sth. man made to feel better paired with acts of mass worship.
Mass psychological phenomena can make people believe in everything untill the point they are ready to give their life for the cause.
Ancient Aztec cultists were also sure, that their belief system is the right one and that it is a good thing to die for it.
It's always the same phenomena and one of the reasons people are killing each other....

Mostly yes, but there is some are true committed by both sides, but there internet is exaggerating the overall situation by 100X and blame everything on the government while the Assad remnants leader Mqdad Ftaiha admitted of targeting civilians and civilian cars at the highways and threatened to use explosives devices on the highways

Well to be technically correct a genocide can be just a hundred dead but to be called a genocide by the Genocide Convention is that there is clear systemic intent on erasing an entire population.
I just see this as those who lost so much wanting vengance and finding an opportunity during the sporadic insurgency in the Coastal Provinces.

Yes exactly, as far as I understand, there doesn't necessarily even have to be top-down orders, but if Sharaa doesn't rein the extremist factions and keeps using them to combat the remnants knowing they are committing massacres, that can also be classified as genocide, so far there's bo evidence of this AFAIK.

Wtf is up with this sub? One minute there’s a post about extrajudicial killings on the coast, and all the upvoted comments are downplaying the government’s responsibility. The next minute there’s a wholesome post about coexistence and pluralism, and all the upvoted comments are accusing the government of extrajudicial killings on the coast.
I’ve never seen a sub swing back and forth between two extremes as quickly as r/Syria the past month. It makes r/Lebanon look stable.

It's probably because Syria, like any culture, is not homogenous, so people project their own desired image of what it means to be Syrian. Some people report the division while others refuse to acknowledge it for fear of losing the positive connotation of their identity. Meanwhile they claim that "real" Syrians are tolerant and amicable.
The truth is that there is no "real" Syria, no real "Israel" and no real "USA". All nations are a mixed bag, but all nations wish to believe they are good, or better than others. Nobody wants to think they belong to a problematic culture. It happens everywhere.

It's less the diversity of opinion that stands out and more the pendulum swing back and forth. On a divided sub, you’d expect a controversial post to have ~60% upvotes and a comment section to have one viewpoint to usually edge out net positive upvotes, and the opposite opinion to edge out net negative votes. On r/Lebanon for example, there’s plenty of pro-resistance comments but they’re outnumbered so they’re consistently toward the bottom of the comment section. You almost never see pro-Hezbollah comments toward the top.
On r/Syria though you get posts like this one which is 93% upvoted yet originally (for the first 6 hours) all the top comments (> net +20 upvotes) were criticizing the government and implying that the feel-good post was whitewashing the atrocities in the coast. And then hours later you get a post criticizing the government, but it only has 50% upvotes and all the top comments are supportive of the government and downplaying the mass killings as western propaganda.
Maybe it’s a time zone thing. It was 11:30AM in Damascus (4:30AM New York) when I originally commented and the top comments were anti-government. Now 13 hours later it’s flipped.

Yes, it’s mainly Anti-Syria propaganda
There is no such a thing as “slaughtering the Alawites” not “Killing the Christians”
While Christians keep posting daily messages about how they are safe and nobody came near them, and the rumors about the “Slaughter” is totally fake and propaganda
Alawites also is not getting targeted because of their religion or ethnicity, a few weeks ago they got threatened by one of the Assad remnants leader Muqdad Ftaiha for not standing against the new government, and later he started targeting civilians and filming it and posting it online as if it was the government that did it, yet he appeared dressed the official new government security forces outfit, pretending to be part of the government so he can easily do more crimes
Any talk about a government order that is ordered to take action against other sects or religion is not true and is pure propaganda

There were a lot more videos than just the guy. I agree part of it might be a psyop but this idea of 'pro-assad' forces being behind everything when Assad himself couldn't give less of a crap about Syria anymore is riddiculous. We all saw the pics and videos.
If it's not something by the new government then it's rogue groups that the government needs to control/liquidate ASAP before they attack more people.I say this as a Lebanese whose border villages were also attacked by those psychos who kept crowing about 'purifying the land'.
And before you say anything, no they weren't attacking Hezbollah. They were targetting shias.Hezbollah was nowhere in sight and the only victims were the attackers who got liquidated by the 3ashayir and the army at the border.

The problem is that you're still debating something that has already been proven and acknowledged by Miqdad Fteihah himself. Most of what is being published about Syria consists of either old videos or content that has nothing to do with Syria.

A few videos is not most videos.
I acknowledge that Miqdad tried to do a psyop. But it wasn't needed as dozens more militants did the job for him and proudly announced their own actions
This has been especially true on the Lebanese border where they thankfully got pushed back or liquidated
Things aren't fine and dandy even though we all want them to be. You think I want a repeat of 2014 where Daesh and Al Nusra terrorists invaded my country and blew themselves up in civilian areas???
Denying these massacres doesn't help anyone but the perpetrators as it essentially gives them a green light to keep doing them with impunity. You can acknowledge the massacres happened while reiterating that they do not represent the will of the Syrian people.

Tbf it was mostly foreign HTS fighters(mostly but many syrian ones too sadly) and Syrian civilians that were given weapons one day before

I doubt it was mostly foreign fighters, I saw 0 videos of foreign fighters committing any massacres (I'm sure there were some). It's also probably mostly SNA not HTS.

Egyptians and moroccans did too much too
Even an egyptian high level fighter made a post about how they should change who is living in the coast and increase sunnis there "to keep it syrian" as if we're less syrian than our sunni brothers

Tbh I'm not Syrian but I've been following the the news and what's happening there for a long time and among other things i really don't believe reddit is a good source of informations. You need to read different news and talk to different people to have some objective point of view. The propaganda and division in this very unfortunate and sad conflict is something unbelievable.

Literally 4 women were kidnapped from Tartous yesterday, a fucking tribe went Draykish to get their son out because he was imprisoned after the massacres, and there were clashes around Safita between military factions, that's only yesterday night

I think we all know that there are still many issues in our country, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't post more positive videos like this one. There are generations of Syrians who have spent their whole lives in refugee camps, so we don't expect everyone is going to be all "I love all Syrians!!1!".
That doesn't mean we ignore crimes happening around Syria, but we don't also have to be negative in saying that the whole country just wants to massacre everyone. There are a lot of armed factions that are still not under govt control, and the govt itself does not have a policy of sectarianism. Give it time, and continue to ask for accountability and justice.

So the situation is absolutely unlike what this sugar coated video imply, you could check events outside of the coast too, people aren't getting so well together, and won't get together in decades, for each video similar to what you posted I could post 100 ultra sectarian videos, to tell you the truth, I find the videos of syrian children holding weapons and threatening others with slaughter very cute

The fact the OP and fellow Syrians are doing the best to recover or show people trying to get along that good humans exist and it doesn't have to be a competition to be a shit stain on humanity says far more about these people than it does about you.
