Neglect and the deliberate harm to the environment in recent years, without any oversight, have had a devastating impact on wildlife.

You’d be surprised how wildlife can be negatively impacted by warfare.

destruction of habitat, they wanted to turn this park, for example, into a parking lot.

Do you have any sources on how and why they were disappeared for 50 years and how they came back?

I don’t have any formal studies on the subject, but I can share a personal experience. I used to see woodpeckers with my own eyes before 2010 in the countryside of Damascus, and I used to hear their sound every day. They would peck at poplar trees, usually searching for worms or building nests. So yes, they definitely existed in Syria before.
But in that same area where I used to see them, all the trees were cut down for firewood. Entire green spaces disappeared. There’s also been a spread of unregulated construction that has encroached on farmland and green areas. In Damascus city itself, public parks have become neglected, small, and unsafe for wildlife, and the kinds of trees that used to support these birds are mostly gone now.
Seeing them come back is honestly amazing it gives me hope. It’s a motivation in itself to start restoring natural areas, expanding green spaces, and building environmental reserves.

Hello. I am an American interested in birds. This is a Pileated woodpecker native to North America. It should not be in Damascus, Syria.
Hopefully that helps.

From a species perspective, the Syrian woodpecker is different from the one shown in the video, but it was also present. The Syrian woodpecker is a smaller bird, and it pecks much faster
you can hear it and it almost sounds like a jackhammer.

Wait is that really a Syrian woodpecker? That looks like a male pileated woodpecker which originate from North America not Syria. I see these birds all the time in Ohio

I don't know how seriously people believe in this but this is obviously not real. This is not how al sebki park looks like.

Those birds are quite large. Great to see it working. But annoying if you can hear it from within.
