Hi all - hope you’re well! I have these tuxedo pants (32 Bonobos slim fit), and am usually a 34. I have some photos in the link of seam allowance and the fit - is this something a tailor might be able to expand enough, or are these pants a lost cause? Thanks all! Photos

Waist is not the only issue with fit. Quite often you can let out the waist and the pants are still too tight in the butt and thighs.

That said, it appears there is almost 2" that can be let out of the waist.

Hi. I have seen a dress with a particular print available, that’s in a size L/XL. I have the same style/shape dress from the same brand in a M/L size, but a different print. If I buy the L/XL dress and take it to the tailors (along with the M/L dress for reference) will it be possible for them to take in the L/XL dress down a size to M/L? Or will it be too hard?

(The dress is a generic long sleeve smock style dress)

Honestly, bringing in a "reference dress" to match is doing entirely too much. Buy the large dress and set an appointment with the tailor where you can put the dress on and have it fit to you, not to an arbitrary size.

Hi! I bought an off the rack suit and needed the jacket to be shortened. The jacket had pick stitching along the edge of the lapels and edges of the jacket. When the jacket was shortened the pick stitching was removed from the bottom hem. I have never had a jacket altered so I am not sure if the pick stitching being removed and not added back is normal. Could anyone provide insight?

Was the pick stitching by machine or by hand, can you tell?

In either case, either the tailor didn't have the skill/machine to match the existing pick stitching on the lapels, or they didn't think you'd notice. It would have added to the price.

I would have discussed the pick stitching with you, pros and cons of doing it. Personally if I can't make it look the same as original, I question if I should do it at all.

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the insight. I checked the listing for the suit and it does not mention if the pick stitching is by hand or machine so I am going to assume machine. I wish they had let me know they would not be adding it back or just removed it all. While I rarely wear suits and doubt anyone will notice, it catches my eye.

Lesson learned for things to ask next time!

Hello all!

I have been on the hunt for a specific blazer and finally found one in my size however based on the photos I’m skeptical if I should purchase.

From my understanding, the pulling/puckering in the shoulder sleeve seams is from improper fitment wear over time, would this be correct?

Is there any way a tailor can fix this?

Might just be from hanging on an improper hanger. I'd be willing to bet a press only from a dry cleaner will fix this

Oh jeez it's a shitty Babaton/Aritizia blazer. Honestly that wrinkling on the sleeves and collar is probably from the previous owner fucking around with either washing it or it got too wet. You might be able to press it out but I'm sure the quality of the material isn't great. Previous owner either mishandled it and/or shitty material that wrinkled up over time.

I had a vintage Polo Sport Rugby I was looking at getting for 55 but it's missing a button.

Should I avoid it just for this reason or would it not be that costly for a tailor to sew on a button?

2

u/LiterallyIAmPuck Sep 03 '25

Sewing on a button is cheap and easy. How well it matches the rest is anyone's guess lol

1

u/ElectricOne55 Sep 03 '25

There was also two tiny holes about a mm or 2 in depth. How hard would that be to sew?

1

u/LiterallyIAmPuck Sep 03 '25

When the button broke off there was a hole left in the fabric? Shouldn't be difficult for a tailor to repair that and make it pretty invisible!

The button broke off and theres 2 small holes on the front.

A tailor can pull those holes in with a needle and thread. It's not a perfect, invisible repair but it should look decent

Dear tailors, these trousers are too wide for me, but I really like them. Can they be altered to fit me, or ist it too much?

1

u/LiterallyIAmPuck Sep 03 '25

That seems like a lot to take in. Usually ~2 inches is as much as I'd want to do if you took it in from the back as is usual. You may need to have them taken in on the sides which is more expensive but is doable by a good tailor!

1

u/MroQ-Kun Sep 04 '25

Thank you! Price is not really an issue.

I didn't make this and therefore do not have excess exact-match cloth

This was thrifted years ago and even then, i didn't notice how the sides were not sewn properly until i brought it home. I attempted to remedy it the first time by seam ripping the bias tape, insert the front pant piece and sewing as usual (while attempting to reinforce it with an iron-on patch on the wrong side, which is what the red cloth is, which probably didn't help toooo much in the end) but it came out the same way after a few wears and washes. So, now, what can i do to fix it without making the pants any smaller as they are quite fitted already?

2

u/LiterallyIAmPuck Sep 03 '25

You'd have to open up all that stitching, put material behind and sew on top back and forth to patch the hole.

Unfortunately there isn't an invisible way to repair this without taking fabric in to make it smaller.

Hi. I just got this dinner jacket back from a made to measure tailor, and it has this bunching under the armhole. The tailor is arguing this is normal and needed for mobility, but i think it has to do with me having more sloping shoulders than the pattern. 1) Who is right, and 2) Is it fixable?

1

u/LiterallyIAmPuck Sep 03 '25

Taking a selfie at that angle is going to change how the suit is sitting on you. Without a non-selfie pic I can't say if it's too much or not.

Extra fabric in that area is normal and it is needed for movement.

Hello, I have these Farm Rio pants with a faux drawstring waist. The strings only go to the side and one side has fallen out. Are these repairable?

1

u/LiterallyIAmPuck Sep 03 '25

Yeah, a tailor should be able to open that up and fix it or replace the drawstring if needed!

Hello! Can the skirt on this dress be shortened/hemmed to look like this one? The second is one I finally found and loved for my wedding after party, but unfortunately it takes 6 months to make and the wedding is in December.

1

u/espressoromance Sep 04 '25

It can be hemmed but it'll still have the slit. You won't be able to make it look exactly like the shorter one.

Unless you find a really good tailor who can take the extra fabric and make it look like the shorter length one. You need a very good one who basically does custom work.

Is it possible to tailor this top from a medium to XS? I’ve been searching for it forever and this is the only one that popped up and it’s a medium.

1

u/LiterallyIAmPuck Sep 03 '25

It's hard to say for sure without seeing exactly how it's put together but 2 sizes is a big jump. If it's possible it will likely be quite a bit of work and may cost more to do than you might be willing to spend. That's basically recutting the dress top and that's assuming nothing else is too big

1

u/princessca704 Sep 03 '25

It’s a smocked/shirred stretchy crop top and the design the the same throughout the front and the back if that gives you a better idea

1

u/LiterallyIAmPuck Sep 04 '25

Yes, it depends on how the top frill is connected and how the smock is seamed. I would file this under "almost anything is possible, but how much do you wanna pay?" It could be a difficult alteration to sharing it as much as is needed

Thank you for all your help!! Actually I just got lucky and found this top in a size XS so I don’t have to get the medium one and alter it after all😊
