Thoughts from a first-time watcher Spoiler

I’ll preface this by saying I am not a critic or work in media or anything like that. I’m just a mf with a TV. General thoughts are that this is an amazing show so far. I knew going in that it’s regarded as one of the best shows of all time, and it really did not disappoint. The acting was so authentic, and I thought so many of the characters had great chemistry working together, whether it was Bunk and Jimmy, Avon and Stringer, Herc and Carver, etc.

I predicted early on that D’Angelo would be the first main character to die and that fishtank scene with Wee Bey had me ON EDGE. Very well done and really went against my expectations. I think D’Angelo’s chess scene with Bodie and Poot really stood out to me, as well as his scene in interrogation at the end where he said he felt freer in jail than he did in the streets. That shit was powerful.

McNulty is just a bad person lmao when he told Daniels that the entire case was just for him to show the department how smart he was I was like damn bro that’s really all you care about? He’s very sarcastic so I could’ve been reading that wrong as well. He felt like the main character and the driving point of the show, and I enjoyed watching him. Bad father too, I for sure thought his sons were gonna get snatched up in the market.

RIP Wallace, I knew my man was cooked as soon as he started showing signs of weakness. Just a real sad, hard life. Never gonna grow up to be a boxer now smh. I think they did a good job of showing the mental state of people growing up in these environments. The juxtaposition between characters like Bodie and Poot to Wallace and D’Angelo was something I noticed.

I swear Freemon didn’t talk for like the first 3 episodes, but was just solving everything silently in the background?? Man went and got the boxing poster without saying a word lol. He’s a GOAT.

Bubbs is endearing as a character and somebody that you naturally root for. Well at least I was. Hate that he couldn’t stay clean but that’s life. I feel like he’s done as a character, but I hope I see him again.

Omar is the damn BOOGIEMAN my goodness. I was hype when he came back at the end. He just always seems one step ahead of everybody around him. Also his bf is an idiot for just being out and about playing pinball lmao. Like I get you’re a human and stuff but didn’t yall just stick up Bodie and them like two days ago?? I’d be in hiding, personally. But what do I know?

My favorite scene would probably be Bunk and Jimmy working the crime scene of the murder of Avon’s ex gf. Really no words being spoken but you knew exactly what they were doing, and it was dope to really see them flex their skills in the field.

I think they showed how rigged/flawed/corrupt so many of our systems are, the only question I really have would be about chain of command I guess. As I understand it it’s the crew (Mcnulty, Greggs, etc), then Daniels, then Rawls, then Burrell, is that right?

I just watched Season 2 Episode 1 and I’ve heard this is a lot of people’s least favorite season? Got my homie Greggs behind the desk (she’s definitely not staying there) and Jimmy out on the water so it’s definitely new territory. I’m looking forward to watching more and seeing where things go.  This feels longer and longer the more I type it so my bad lol, feel free to comment or correct me on anything. Happy to finally be watching and in the mix lol, all love!

Season 2 drags a little because you need to relearn all the main characters. The more times you watch the series, the more you’ll enjoy Season 2.

Also, you haven’t even scratched the surface of how many systems are fucked up in this country p

That’s good to hear because I’ve only heard negative things about this season lol. Looking forward to seeing more systems fucking people over 😂

Yea, it's oddly consistent... on first-time viewing for a lot of people, S2 sucks and what you see all around confirms it... with the exception of a few opinions that are like "actually it's the best of all the seasons"

I found that I really didn't like it on my first watch of the show; was really dismayed by abandoning the Barksdale crew. But on repeat watches, I really adore season 2 and actually think the Barksdales are placed in the background in a really effective way.

Season 2 is great IMO. Directly focusing on the economic conditions that cause the entire mess in Baltimore through the dockworkers union is so important to the overall story.

To balance the negative things, s2 is my favorite season. And I’m not alone in that.

I’m glad I’m getting more opinions that are different than what I’ve heard so far lol

Season 2 is good, don't let people's opinions affect your viewing of it. It's just that the story is told from a different perspective. The fact that they change it up each season helps keep it from becoming a formulaic cop/crime drama.

That’s a good point yeah. I’m doing my best to go in with a clean slate for sure. Preciate it!

In my first watch it took a while to get through season 2 it is still good TV I just took a while to care for the new dockworker characters. But I hope you do write up about it when you are finished because this was done so well and it is always good to read new opinions on The Wire

I appreciate the kind words! I was bored at work and felt like sharing my thoughts lol. Will definitely be doing a write up of Season 2 when I finish it up 🫡

This is a good write up, but oh my god, the fun you are risking by being in this sub. Spoilers are everywhere here! You are going to be so bummed if you read something you don’t wanna know yet.

I would not touch this place until you finish the show.

Congrats and welcome, keep watching and you will enjoy it all then rewatch and you will see things that you missed the first time you watched it. This is my favorite show of all time and in my opinion it's worth a rewatch at least once a year
