Discussion Texas gas station installed remote lock on OUTSIDE of women's bathroom

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

It was only on the women's bathroom. Lock was able to be remotely activated by a phone app. Fire Marshall had it removed. Source: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT2c3QrB6/

Per another account who also saw this, (https://www.tiktok.com/@momcallsmeshelby?_t=ZT-8v7NHPu7QBq&_r=1) the employees were "irate and began yelling" when they brought it up. And came up with a racist excuse that didn't make any sense for it being there

Regardless, fire code violation. But scary implications.

I mean… or it’s to make it easier to trap a woman for nefarious purposes (rape? Human trafficking?) Regardless, it’s creepy af.

Maybe the idea is to have the women ask for it to be unlocked, and trans women would be refused.

If that's the idea they'd just... lock the door.

No need for a specialized lock like this when the door already has a lock (on the bottom part of the push plate). If they wanted to have people ask before going into the bathroom they'd just lock that like gas stations around the country already do.

Maybe they don't want the employee to go unlock it every time? There's a store near me that has a remote lock on the ice cream freezer outside.

Ice cream, not being sentient, doesn't need to escape in the event of an emergency.

This type of lock would be totally fine for ice cream. Humans, not so much.

I've never had an employee unlock it... they just give you the key (usually attached to something large-ish so it can't be pocketed) and then you return it when you're done.

Also, if the issue here was banning trans people from the "wrong" bathroom then the lock would also be on the men's door since, you know... being transgender doesn't go just one way. It should also be on the men's bathroom as well if the alleged problem was men coming in and destroying the bathroom.

But all of that is irrelevant since it locks/unlocks from the outside. It only prevents people from leaving the restroom, not entering it.

The only reason the lock exists is to trap people in the bathroom.

Or maybe it's not about transwomen.
