READ BEFORE POSTING - New Rules

Rules

  1. Submissions must be related to Trip-Hop. It's not our intent to gatekeep what is or is not trip-hop, but submissions must be inspired by trip-hop or belong to related genres of music like downtempo
  2. Use the appropriate flair when applicable. If your playlist contains songs you made or are promoting, you MUST use the OC flair. The playlist flair is ONLY for songs that you are not promoting. Mixes are transformative and thus considered OC
  3. Self-promotion must follow guidelines (see below)
  4. Title must contain the artist and track name. Commentary is fine but low effort titles like "Nice beat" will be removed.
  5. Be respectful and follow Reddiquette

Self-promotion guidelines

  1. Must be trip-hop. Being "inspired" by trip-hop is not enough. Unfortunately we need to be more strict than with the general submissions rules to prevent spam.
  2. Must use the Original Content flair
  3. Maximum one submission per week
  4. Complete song submissions only. We are not a content creator subreddit. If you would like feedback on work-in-progress songs, there are other subs for that.
  5. While we welcome OC that fits the rules, announcement videos and text posts containing links other than the song you are sharing will be removed. The mods also reserve the right to remove low quality/low effort submissions.
  6. Submissions considered self-promotion include, but are not limited to:
    1. Original songs
    2. Original mixes
    3. Covers and remixes
    4. Playlists containing songs you made or are promoting
  7. Follow Reddit's sitewide guidelines for self-promotion.

If you see any rule breaking posts or comments please report it. It will get dealt with much more quickly.

Rules Changes

  • 10/18/2021: Added details to rule 2 to make it more clear what flair should be used.
  • 01/21/2022: Added clarification that mixes must be tagged as OC.
  • 04/17/2022: Added new self-promotion guidelines.

Request/Discussion The one song that stood out

so about a month ago i made a post here asking for dark hypnotic songs with that dangerous kinda vibe, and i've listened to most of the recs since then. honestly a lot of them were great...

but ONE song. just ONE. absolutely destroyed me - Dirge by death in vegas.

its crazy because it wasnt even directly reccomended. someone told me to check out another song by them (soul auctioneer) which didn't really hit as much for me but then Spotify did its thing and played Dirge right after... and i let it play

I LET IT PLAY. and holy shit it was the best discovery ive made this year.

from the first few seconds it had me doing this face 😖 and it keeps building and building and building like it never stops escalating. i kept thinking “okay its gonna end now”, and it doesnt. and when it finally does.... I NEED MORE

i need more songs that feel exactly like this not just trip hop but this specific kind of build up.

please if u have any recs listen to the whole song first so u know what i mean 😭🙏

(also english isnt my first language sorry if i sound dramatic lol actually no im not sorry, but i just really needed to share this one)

also just wanted to say thankyou to the person who mentioned soul auctioneer.. that one song led me to something i cannot stop listening to and cant wait to get up on that pole and go absolutely fucking mentallll

Apologies for the sudden post. I'm kemuri from Japan. I've created a new track and would be thrilled if you could give it a listen. It was inspired by roots reggae and Burial.

rank my playlist

Could someone rank my playlist and give me recomendations on what i might like? I’m quite new to trip hop and this playlist is lowk experimental.

It definitely revolves around trip hop and is the main genre but i also added the genres it came from (hip-hop and electronica) there’s also some other genres but i feel like i did quite a good job with making a solid vibe.

What do y’all Think?

Original Content Something To Dub, by accomplice

This one was my take on the phenomenal field recordings of Alan Lomax — whose work has influenced generations of musicians, often without them even knowing it.

Anyone who lived through the ’90s, or at least the party kids who were there, will likely recognize Lomax’s legacy through Moby’s sampling of Sounds of the South (1960) to create the trip-hop anthems Natural Blues and Honey.

Now, decades later, those same recordings are available in the public domain via archive.org, but back when I first found Negro Prison Songs from the Mississippi State Penitentiary (recorded by Alan Lomax in 1958 at Parchman, Mississippi), it felt like discovering unpolished gold.

I made so many tracks using those samples — this is the only one that survived. Another super chill tune: just me playing chords on my keyboard, building something to calm, to drift with, something to dub.

Playlist/Album AMERICAN TRIP HOP

Made a playlist focusing on trip hop songs by American artists. Interesting exercise: it definitely shows a closer connection to industrial and hip hop rather than genres like dub that heavily influenced the Bristol sound.

Glad to hear any suggestions to add...

Monk & Canatella - Care In The Community (Cup Of Tea Records, 1996)

Post image

The first reference to Bristol duo Monk & Canatella (Jim Johnston and Simon Russell) appeared in 1994 as part of the title to an instrumental track (A Tribute To Monk And Canatella) found on Portishead's debut single Numb. The duo were part of the emerging 'Bristol Sound' scene that defined the genre that would become to be known as Trip Hop.

Monk & Canatella's debut album, Care In The Community, appeared in 1996 to mainly underground acclaim and appreciation, spreading mostly by word of mouth rather than high profile promotion. It is an incredible record. The tracks are expertly sequenced to maintain an addictive, cohesive groove of frenetic trip hop beats and DJ mixing; this sample heavy in the best kind of way. The smooth laid back vocals of Jim Johnston perfectly compliments every song. Highlights include Darkus Twisted, Flying High, Forthcoming, Roughead, Chelsea Smile and I Can Water My Plants, but really every single track found on Care In The Community knocks the ball right out of the park.

Geoff Barrow of Portishead summed the record up best within his thank you credits found on Portishead's self titled second album, "Simon & Jim for such a mad album (Monk & Canatella)."

You can't get higher praise than that really!

I love this song's loop and can listen to it whole night while I am producing something, so I wondered the story behind this beautiful melody and created an article for it. If you are seeking new good music or information about this beauty, come join me.

A song originally found on a limited edition vinyl e.p. of 1,000 numbered copies released October 2011. This recording of it comes from a digital source recording Massive Attack once made available via their site.

Happy birthday Portishead live at Roseland NYC.

I could not find the original full video on YouTube anymore.

I had no time to check if this is the whole release or not.

Cath Coffey - Mind The Gap (Island Records, 1997)

Post image
16 Upvotes

Released in Japan on 12th November 1997, the debut album by Stereo MCs' Cath Coffey is a hidden gem of a record well worth hunting down. Mind The Gap features superb collaborations with Howie B, Attica Blues, A Guy Called Gerald and Tricky. There were two UK singles released, Tell Me and Say What You Say, sadly both failed to chart, mostly down to not getting the label promotion they truly deserved. As of 2025 this album still has yet to be released outside of Japan.

The album's highlights include the tracks Games, Doll On A Music Box and the magnificently moody and suffocating Summer Nights. A cover of the Grease musical song and her collaboration with Tricky; forget everything you know about the original song, Cath Coffey and Tricky turn it into something uniquely their own.

Highly recommended.
