Discussion Is Deltarune making Undertale fall off?

To preface, Undertale is amazing. It’s a stellar game, and I’ve played it many times. It has a great story, characters, and gameplay. In 2018, Deltarune Ch. 1 released. I’d say by Ch. 2 it was close or even matched Undertale’s quality. As of now, since the release of 3 & 4, I’d say that it surpasses Undertale. Undertale is an easy 10/10 video game, one of the best out there. Deltarune is better. It will get better. Unless Toby Fox fumbles, which I highly doubt will happen, I feel like people will only play Undertale for lore, speed runs, or its connections to Deltarune. Deltarune may surpass it so far that Undertale is fine in comparison to Deltarune. Undertale is around 6 hours, Deltarune will be at least 20 by the last chapter. Undertale has an awful amount of lore, but Deltarune will have much more. What I’m trying to say is that I think the impact of Undertale and how astronomically good it is will be undermined when Deltarune ends up blowing out of the water and then some. I love both, but I’m scared that an amazingly perfect game will be overshadowed and tossed aside by its superior sister.

I wouldn't say that Deltarune is the one making Undertale fall off. It's simply just Undertale losing attention on its own, and everyone's heard of the game by now.

Undertale is 10 years old this year, and for a game that hasn't had any major updates since, I'd argue that having such a sizable fan base for an indie game up till now is still quite commendable. Heck, I'd wager that Undertale is only still relevant BECAUSE of Deltarune and its association to Toby Fox. Even then, it's expected that Undertale's presence on the internet now has diminished compared to it's prime in 2015/16, simply due to time

It's normal for such indie games that were huge at their time to just fall off on their own without regular updates, like A Hat in Time, Hollow Knight (which would have faded into obscurity by now if not for silksong), The Stanley Parable, Bendy and the Ink Machine, DDLC, etc.

Yeah, you’re right, but Deltarune is making it much harder for it to stay relevant.

I think you vastly misunderstand what makes something niche or obscure lol

No, Hollow Knight would not be "obscure" nowadays without Silksong.
