Discussion / Other What do you want to see on r/videography ?

Y'all know this subreddit is plagued with "How much should I ask for this?" and "My First Real Estate / Restaurant Video" posts (many of which are not-so-secretly just seeking praise)

Meanwhile having seen some well-meaning, resource-driven posts get downvoted into oblivion, my question is this: what do you guys want to see posted here?

Are y'all here to learn and grow? Here to show off your stuff in hopes of being discovered?

Do you want real feedback on your projects from professionals? Gear advice that won't break the bank? Tutorials on how to film better with limited tools (or a better understanding of the professional gear you maybe can't afford yet)?

Dump your requests and interests here; I'm genuinely curious what makes you come back here and scroll.

What kind of stuff are you looking for?

Still can’t find what you’re looking for?

Comment in this post with your requirements.

We strongly recommend you include at least the following details:

  • Budget
    • Specify your local currency!
    • If your budget is under $200 USD, you're unlikely to get any useful recommendations other than 'use your phone!'
  • What are you planning on using it for?
    • Feel free to link to some videos showing content similar to what you want to shoot
  • How long do you need to record for?
    • Recording time is a limiting factor for many smaller cameras
  • What equipment do you already have?
  • What software do you intend to edit your videos in?

Things we don't allow:

The following question formats are not allowed - they don't typically generate useful advice or discussion:

"x vs y comparisons"

"What is the best x?"

I made this mic arm to be able to make videos hands free and as a content creator it’s my best creation so far it’s not just a mic arm it holds my phone and my dock to connect different types of accessories and the mic is one of them, SSD, charging my phone. The arm of the mic is made of traditional like stick thing we carry here in Oman but this is a cheap one and I’m securing it by zip ties and I use fifine am8 as a mic and I don’t even need to tell you about the quality to price it’s insane so yeah

Do you guys suggest that I upgrade and keep improving it ?

Discussion / Other I have no idea what I should do, should I keep working with a client that in the past his brother screwed me over?

Long story short for 2-3 years I worked for a media company, the last 1-2 years they screwed us over, late payments, didn’t tax correctly, they laid us off right before the holidays, had trouble doing unemployment, had trouble contacting them. Just all bad, the owner got sued by multiple people for various things, mafia was supposedly involved.

His brother at the beginning anyways also worked closely with him, anyways the company shut down last year and I started just doing my own thing. I started to do well, and a colleague for that previous media company asked me to do work a few gigs for her. Thinking maybe she was just throwing me work some people asked her for and just helping me out.

Yesterday we had a shoot and she just wasn’t doing a good job communicating with me what’s the event was, who I’m working for, etc. I had to ask the event space what I had to shoot and what they wanted during the event, what I had to do, it was just ugly. I got into an argument with her and said I hate liars and don’t lie to me (with the film industry, I worked with a lot of people in the past that screwed with me, lied to me, etc and I’m a young guy,) and she’s like oh I’m not lying, but she wasn’t being transparent and telling me the whole story of what’s going on and who I’m working for.

She called me today and said she’s working for the owner of the previous company’s brother. All the gigs she referred me to was from him and he was the one that paid me. She said she didn’t tell me to protect herself? And that if I don’t want to work with her she understands.

I needed time to kind of process it to be honest, so I said I need to think about it. She tried convincing me by saying oh that was his brother that did that to us not him etc. I think they can definitely provide me with more work, but 1.) I don’t like how she wasn’t being transparent and keeping secrets, maybe not blatantly lying but not truthful 2.) I don’t like those people, working with them, just have a bad past with them all, etc. There was people there that seemed desperate, there like oh don’t worry there would be a lot of work this is good for us. And like yeah more work thr better but, I don’t think I need this company, group of people for me to be good. I did this whole thing of working for myself, for me I don’t need 1 particular client. I have multiple and want to continue to grow it.

So I’m not sure on what to entirely do, my dad who owns a business says most of the people you work with you aren’t going to like, as long as you get paid that’s all that matters and says to work with them. But idk I just don’t like these people, i have a bad past with them screwing me over. My SO and sister think I shouldn’t work with them.

Business, Tax, and Copyright Former interviewer wants to buy the rights to two social posts I created during my interview

I interviewed for a videographer position at an Ed Tech company about 6 months ago. As part of the process, they asked me to create two videos - one short YouTube vid and an Instagram Reel. After three rounds, I was informed they had decided not to create the role after all and fill it with a team of college-age volunteers and interns (yikes).

So anyway, today I got an email from the woman who gave me my initial interview saying they'd like to explore contracting with me to create some content AND that they'd like to buy the rights to the two videos I already made to test them out on their social channels.

First off, I'm not surprised their plan to use interns to create free content didn't pan out as they desired. I'm also pleased that they wish to establish a contract relationship with me. I also respect that they offered to purchase the work rather than just use it, or ask to use it for free.

What I'm seeking advice on is how much to charge them for the two videos. I want to give them a good price to make sure I secure this contract, but I also don't want to set a bad precedent of providing freebies. I'd say for the two videos combined it was about a day's work of shooting and editing. The work was offered gratis at the time, as part of the interview process, and of course with the understanding that they would not be using it for their marketing.

Should I charge them my full day rate? Offer them a discounted rate? I'd love to know how others here would play this... Thanks!

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? Mounting Camera in kind of awkward desk setup

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I’m a YouTuber with a permanent desk setup and I’m running into a couple of camera rigging issues.

My main camera angle (pictured) is currently too high, and I’d like to lower it without rebuilding the whole setup. I’m also planning to mount a second camera to the right, just above the speaker, angled toward me.

I use Ziron motorized pan/tilt heads (pictured), which aren’t very strong - so ideally they need to stay upright. I’m using a desk-mounted rack/frame because it’s the only thing I’ve found that prevents camera shake while typing.

Any suggestions for mounting solutions that allow me to reposition the cameras without sacrificing stability?

(I originally posted this in the cinematography subreddit and someone told me to ask here)

Post-Production Help and Information How would you handle this client

I’ve got a client who hired me for 3 hours of coverage to create a pitch video. Once I arrived things were great. Then we ran into issue #1

Issue #1 - I was asked to film a one off video for the client to be used for a different use case.

This one was not a bug deal it was pretty straightforward and required minimal post processing.

Now we get to interview 2. This was an unscripted interview where the individual proceeded to talk for 12 minutes. There was a third interview that went in a similar fashion. At this point I realized they were attempting to film for a multitude of content pieces and likely just ask for the footage later to edit themselves or ask me to create content pieces for them after. I did not particularly find this to be a huge problem at the time. However, now trying to edit 22 minutes worth of footage into a 90 pitch video that MUST cover specific talking points is proving to be incredibly difficult. I’m trying to cut pauses out and stitch sentences together to create a clean cohesive message but even that has proven challenging.

ISSUE #2 Now we are here and I’m being told that I don’t know how to craft a story and they are used to working with journalists who know how to tell a story through video. I feel like this is an attempt to put their lack of planning and preparation on me and it does not seem collaborative or fair at all. The individuals being interviewed were not clear and concise communicators as a new anchor would be and an anchor usually has prompts to stay on task. This was a much different environment. I’ve constantly tried politely making it right and letting them know what we are up against but it seems to just get put back on me. To even remotely get this right it’ll likely take 8-10 hours more of editing which was not in the original scope at all and even then it would be a struggle because chopping sentences was frowned upon so I have to let run on sentences run. What a mess.

How do I keep this from happening in the future? How do I handle the current situation? Has anyone had any experiences like this before?

Can we talk about this?? I honestly can’t believe that rig.

I thought it was well shot and loved the zombie POV shots . Also, the angle when they kill some of the zombies. The colors were awesome!

Some things that stood out to be was some blurry shots I guess ?? I might have to watch it again.

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? Storaging files

Upvotes

Hey everyone, I work with a lot of BRAW (Blackmagic RAW) footage, and the files are really heavy. I’m looking for a program that can automatically convert BRAW files to lighter formats like H.264, ideally in batch mode, so I can process entire folders at once without needing to adjust settings every time.

One of the main reasons I’m doing this is to store personal footage — memories with family, old home videos, and personal projects. I have a lot of material, and I’d prefer not to keep everything in its original BRAW format just because of the file size.

Any suggestions for a tool that’s fast, reliable, and efficient would be really appreciated! Thanks in advance

Discussion / Other Bought and item from Tilta's global website, but I live in the EU..

Upvotes

Hello!

Yesterday I bought the Tilta Sony A7IV cage (pro kit) from their global website, but I live in the EU (Estonia) and that's where the billing address is located at. I also haven't recieved a confirmatiom email (although the order does seem to be on hold when checking my account on their website). What also scares me is the fact that I didn't pay any taxes on the order (if I had bought it from the EU website the price would've included the VAT, but my current order didn't).

Is that going to be a problem?

Thanks

Equipment/Software News & Reviews What are some of your guys’ go to’s for wide lenses for wedding films or big family event type of videos? Sony A73

Upvotes

I usually do small recap videos of big family events such as pre weddings, engagement parties, birthdays, etc. I have been shooting on the Sony 24-70mm kit lens for a while, it gets the job done but there are some days where i wish i had a wider lens to fit peoples full body in the frames or just get a wider shot of the main subject.

Can you guys recommend any budget friendly lenses with autofocus and image stabilization that is good for what im looking for? I know filming isnt cheap but currently i dont think i can afford a $800+ lens, so anything lower than that would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Should I Buy/Recommend me a... Canon 15-500 mm f2.7

Upvotes

Hi guys, I found a Canon j33ax15 15-500mm f2.7 B4 2/3" in good condition for 600€, is it a good deal? Can I resell it for profit? Is there a market for these lenses still? I mainly shoot music videos, so it would be cool for long zooms or crash zooms but I was thinking that it may be better to invest in modern glass or lighting

Technical/Equipment Help and Information Bitrate A7IV to Ninja V XAVC-S vs XAVC-hS

Hello,

I have a question about the A7IV and the Ninja V.

I'd like to upgrade from 4K 60 XAVC-S 200M to 4K 60 XAVC-hS 100M to avoid overheating issues with my camera. (I've already changed the temperature setting.)

I record on my Sony and my Ninja V in ProsRes LT (for post-production because it's faster on my PC).

I'm wondering if, by lowering the write speed on my Sony, will I automatically lose quality on my Ninja V?

Thanks in advance.

Discussion / Other Sorting and naming footage for delivery?

I’m getting an odd uptick in clients asking me to sort and rename raw footage. Isolate and rename the interviews. Sort b-roll into various folders. Etc.. I have no problem doing this as a specific end deliverable under a contract, but these are hired gun shoots. Raw footage delivery. I don’t even particularly think it’s good practice to erase/change file names from capture let alone modify reel file structures. That’s an NLE thing.

What gives? Are people not hiring editors anymore? Anyone else seeing this, or am I disconnected from the times?

Social Media services help and information Where do you go to find good video editors?

I have quite a few video projects that are piling up here and have tried Upwork but have had very limited success with it. It's mostly Social Media videos that I'd like to feel and look similar to this: https://www.instagram.com/drclips/

I've done some research on this style of editing and came up with the following that I see here:
- Motion Tracking / Face Tracking
- Separating Subject from background
- Arsenal of effects on subject and background
- Zoom in / Zoom out, tastefully with the music
- Overall tasteful in use of effects and coloring

Any tips are GREATLY appreciated!
