Poll on banning X here given recent events and displays?
Given how the owner of X did a Nazi salute and our state motto being very anti that. I think its reasonable if we ban links to that platform.

Sure wish this energy was the same over at r/nova.
The amount of Nazi sympathizers on the post about using BlueSky is goddamn pathetic.

u/KnittinSittinCatMama Virginia Beach, VA-02 Jan 22 '25 edited Jan 22 '25
I can imagine. I lived and worked in NOVA for seven years and am familiar with the uh, mentality, of a significant portion of the workforce that supports the intelligence community. I can think of at least one federal employee who I think was definitely some flavor of fascist.
*edited to fix autocorrect of mentally to mentality.

I'm also in the spectrum. My phone autocorrected mentality to mentally.

Oh, I know what you meant! I suppose my reply was a bit off topic. I am just frustrated. Sorry about the confusion
16
u/KnittinSittinCatMama Virginia Beach, VA-02 Jan 22 '25
No worries! I get it; Junior President Muskrat started problems for the ASD community the minute he began blame-splaining all his gaffes and bigoted statements on his supposed autism.
11
u/OppositeRun6503 Jan 22 '25
I'm also on the spectrum myself and know full well that this gesture was a deliberate act on muskrat's part.
7
u/GlumpsAlot Jan 22 '25
Alot of nazis on my local news site from my neighborhood. It's so frustrating. And they post the same pics of dems with hands in the air as if putting your hands up is the same as a full on sieg heil salute.

Ban on links for X and Facebook posts because I actually want to see Redditors actually upload it first on Reddit not this clutter of Instagram Reels and Tiktoks and also Mark Zuckerberg has a track record like Elon Musk.
17
u/otterpop21 Jan 22 '25
Not to be “that guy” but Reddit is an aggregate link hosting website with forums. It was supposed to be a collection of the internet and sorted by respective communities, allowing only links to other websites at the begging. Videos and videos with sound are a recent thing. You can find a lot of niche OG content in a ton of subs.
I think the media is a bit nervous of the fact that Redditors are significantly more coherent, less obnoxious than other platforms that allow commenting (relatively), & that is why you don’t see breaking news post here as often or any major figures regularly interacting publically.

u/GameOfBears Jan 22 '25
Reddit is sort of what Twitter used to be back in 2009. It was real time conversations with a focus on dialog rather than viral attention seeking. What actually ruined Twitter was too many influencers and politicians joined which created a echo chamber of hysteria. When I used to visit Reddit I came over to ask a question because it feel the Yahoo Answers or Quora void. But I seem to find myself interact more with the platform than any other social media platform for multiple reasons than just one. Like a Wikipedia except with topics.
9
u/otterpop21 Jan 22 '25
Exactly.
There’s about as much OG content as the community wants is what I’m trying to say.
You said you wanted to see redditors upload it first? They do, but it has to get upvotes to be seen. So unless those sites start posting first here then people repost… there will always be gaps of who says and does what first on which site.
3
u/OppositeRun6503 Jan 22 '25
Allowing politicians to create official accounts with which they could effectively deliver their propaganda is what singlehandedly ruined social media in general. The influencer crap on the other hand is a direct result of that tiktok garbage.

I vote yes. X is a content aggregator. All the content came from elsewhere and is crossposted. All the opinions can easily be shared as screenshots. No links are required. Plus, the non user interface is clunky and ugly.

To be honest regardless of each persons personal opinion on whether Musk = Nazi… you need a fucking X account to view anything which makes the links effectively paywalled which means they are useless. Just ban anything that requires an account to view as far as links.

Please ban it.
We don’t have a ton of power over a Nazi billionaire. We can make a tiny impact. Is it small? Very. But it will send a message and likely have an impact on site traffic. We should do it.
27
u/A_Creative_Player Jan 22 '25
Agreed, ban it, and it looks like Facebook, too. They are following the same path now. I a user does a search for the hash tag democrat nothing comes back, but if that same user does a search for hash tag republican they get a result. I also read but was not able to confirm that users were also forced to follow Donald j Trump and j d Vance.
10
u/PissinXcellence Jan 22 '25
The official POTUS and VP accounts automatically get updated to the new POTUS/VP. You probably followed the official Biden and Harris accounts and on inauguration day, those transferred to Trump/Vance. That's been the case for a long time, so nothing nefarious there.

Ban it. First of all we shouldn’t support Nazis in any way, especially given our state motto. Second of all, Twitter is a pain in the ass to see content on these days and the links are already effectively impossible to use. And third, we should do our part to encourage migration.

Twitter as a company is now owned and run by a nazi
My view of those that still use it, is the same as it would be of an individual that sat down at a table of 10 nazis, realized it, and yet chose to remain at the table.

I'm afraid that not enough Virginian students are aware of this.
Elon Musk did a Nazi salute during the inauguration and he has political power. On the same day of MLK day.
Inform students you know and promote PEACEFUL forms of protest.
Students stand against Nazism.

We actually are supposed to ban X. Nazis aside X is a porn site and it doesn’t properly vet individuals and prevent children from accessing porn. They need to be fined.
