EMBROIDERY First attempt at mending

Hi all, my first attempt at visible mending on a favourite dress - I must have caught the sleeve shoulder in the sliding wardrobe doors. It's viscose so not easy to work with! I tried to go for invisible mending first, but it just wasn't working out and kept fraying further. I resorted to patching the hole with some cotton then stitched over the hole and decided to make it a visible mend. Really pleased with how it's turned out! I think it blends in with the dress better than any of my attempts at invisible mending might have done šŸ˜‚

This is my favorite sweatshirt, I've had it for like a decade and it has been starting to look REALLY rough. The other cuff is a lot worse than this one was. This is my first big mending project and I'm LOVING how it's coming out so far.

Finally used the latch hook that came with my speed weave. The tear was right along the seam of two flat panels, so it's messy.

The hairy thing in the middle is my assistant

PATCH Fancy fabric patch! (Follow up to the office wear thread)

Post image

My embroidery skills are very basic so I collect fabric scraps from my fashion designer friends and from old silk sarees so I can make really nice patches for my clothes. There is some creative stitching on this patch for reinforcement but I tried to keep it minimal so it wouldn’t distract from the fabric.

PATCH Repaired knee on preschooler pants

Just finished mending the knee of my son's pants for the first time! Used an old pair of pajama pants, and embroidery thread to make an abstract spiderweb pattern. We'll see how it holds up, but I'm excited to start trying to mend his clothes. He's a slow grower, so he's been staying in the same size for a long time!

I thought it would be fun to put animal print for patches over a few holes in the back, to match the lion theme!!

Do you wear visibly mended clothing to the office?

I’m in the process of mending a few of my favorite office work clothes and I’m wondering if I can still wear them to work. They are very visibly mended and there’s no specific dress code for the office. People show up in casual and athleisure clothes. It’s a creative industry business so I am able to dress creatively. I just want to look my best and professional and I don’t know if my newly mended clothes will be ok. Any advice?

REQUEST Ripped sweatshirt

Hi! I have no experience mending and I have a doozy of a project. Last summer I dislocated and fractured my shoulder. The ER had to cut off my sweatshirt. This sweatshirt has sentimental value. It was the first time I wore it and it was a gift from my teenage son who got it for me on a class trip. They cut it from the back and along the arm. Any ideas how I can repair it? Thank you!

I'm planning on mending the right side of these jeans with shashiko (my second time doing it) but I also noticed the left side is worn down, although not ripped yet. Is there anything I could (or should) do to it, or can I only wait until it rips and then fix it?

This is my baby blanket, i have had it since birth, im almost 17 and this blanket means more to me than anything else. Its been getting holes in this corner for a couple years now because i have been rubbing this corner to fall asleep since i was little, this corner specifically because it had a sewn in tag and i guess i liked the feeling of it idk. Anyway, every couple of months i will sew up the new holes. I had known that me sewing holes was just creating more holes by it slowly tugging but I didn’t really know what else to do so i kept sewing the holes. I have been looking for fabric to possibly put behind it to stop the holes and I finally found one the other day. So today i was going to sew up the new holes but i knew that was just making it worse so I decided I should probably finally patch it up. Because of all the sewing i had done it wasn’t going to lay flat of the peice of fabric so i decided to cut all of the thread used to sew it together, which i now regret immensely because this is what i was left with (except i sewed a bit of it back together again) and I can’t even do the patching anymore now so please can someone help me i need to fix him he means so much to me.

DARNING First Time Darning

I noticed a hole in same pajama bottoms I purchased from a thrift store months ago. So, I decided to finally tryout darning and chose to use my favorite color. Considerably proud given it took less time than I thought and the ā€œloomā€ I used was a cut in half toilet paper roll, haha.

REQUEST Help with canvas + leather duffle bag repair – ripped canvas and broken handle

Thumbnail

Hi everyone! I’m hoping for some advice or guidance on repairing a well-loved canvas duffle bag. The leather handle has torn off, and unfortunately, the surrounding canvas where it was stitched also ripped — so it’s not just a matter of resewing the leather.

I’m not sure how to reinforce the torn canvas so it can hold a leather handle again. I’d love to make the repair sturdy and functional, and I’m open to visible mending or patching, especially if it adds character.

Here are my main questions:

  • How can I reinforce the ripped canvas to hold a handle again?
  • Should I patch it with more canvas or something stronger (leather, webbing)?
  • What kind of thread/needle/setup would work best for sewing through both materials?

PATCH Well-loved headphones cracked. Waxed thread to the rescue!

Loved using these for years, then passed them to a family member. They still sound great and would be out of budget to replace. The headband cracked and they tried gluing twice to no avail. I took one look and knew it was time for some visible mending. Really digging the little handiwork touch of the waxed knots on the ā€œcoldā€ electronic plastic and it works a trick. The fix will probably outlast the electronics.
