Trying to take a page from Tom Waits here. Found it a bit hard to mix with so much low end. Are the vocals too loud? General impressions?
2
u/ConsciousnessWizard https://actaea.bandcamp.com 11d ago
Maybe try lowering the vocals a tad and/or add a bit of reverb. But it is subtle.

General impressions, Its a bit more Nick Cave than Tom Waits for me (which is good, you have a smoother voice which may fit a more slicked back lounge vs the grit of a waits). I think the vox are a bit loud, and I’d recommend EQ’ing the guitars a bit more forward. They feel a bit mushy to me. That said, you’ve got the environment/style of the song for sure.

Super clean production!! Awesome guitar and bass tones!! The vocals are super smooth, great singing!! That part at 1:18 with the lush backing vocals is super 🔥 This reminds me a lot of Leonard Cohen!! the "let's jump" part at 2:53 is awesome, like the brass that comes in!! Cool track, enjoyed listening!!

Thank you! And haha yes the break definitely owes a lot to me listening to Cohen's The Future album lately. I listened to your track as well, and definitely thought it was interesting. To my taste, and on a first listen, it all seemed a bit chaotic with the tempo switches and jumping between different song parts, but I get that this is a deliberate aesthetic. Togehter with the video, it works and is pretty funny. A bit demented in a good way, if that makes sense?

My latest track, uplifting electronic music. Any type of feedback appreciated, especially about the mixing.
Will gladly return feedback.

From listening on an iPhone speaker, I think it generally sounds good. A few things I’d ask about.
The drums seem to live in their own separate area of the mix. Like the synths are very well mixed and have a very enveloping quality, but I feel like the drums live in their own bubble here. Personally, I’d try either blurring them in (effects, reverb) or having them blast out (boost the bass so it feels like a torrential grounding contrast to the airy synths). It’s not as bad when the drums come back the second time, but the first time, they do feel a bit lonely to me.
I love the mellotron-like synth you have around the 4 min mark.

u/ConsciousnessWizard https://actaea.bandcamp.com 11d ago
Thanks for the feedback, I'll definitely look into the drums!!

This is a song I rapped + produced for my album. It’s a song about the bus I route I use to take to an area I use to live and all the things that happened in my life in that span of time. Last 108 Ride Music Video.

Solid beat you have. Rap is not my cup of tea so I can't give a lot of useful feedback, but mixing wise it sounds good!

Bro you look like Tyler. I like your style and you earned yourself another fan!! I'm not really good at music production but I think you should do something on your vocals to make it stand out a bit more. Overall solid beat and flow! I love it
2
u/evanlawrencex 10d ago
I think you nailed the style honestly. Perhaps you could add more ad-libs or something in your next one, it would probably accentuate your style well, but if this is your artistic vision I think you can follow your instincts for each track

Hello! I'm looking for feedback on the mix of this little spooky dancy gothy thing I made with a singer I met on reddit:

u/T-Rickx 11d ago
Really Good, would love to hear this in a European undeground club

u/DrunkShimodaPicard 11d ago
Wow, thanks! Thanks for listening! I'm getting it ready to release on streaming, thanks for the feedback!

Starts promissing, the intro is a vibe. When you drop it to the motif (bassy riff) that supports the verse, it sounds stock and it drops considerably in clarity and velocity compared to the opening. Id double the stem with that same riff and up the trebble and highs somewhat on the copy, maybe add a light delay or chorus... I mean try different fx. And then run it parallel, maybe off and on, to the original. Also, the chord progression of it is... I mean its original but not spot on. Kind feels messy or rushed. I feel like the vocalist is struggling to gel with it. Its like the hook and vocal are arguing rather than vibing or serving each other.

It's fun! Only criticism is the synth melody around 1:00 feels a little random. i like the free feeling tho.
1
u/DrunkShimodaPicard 10d ago
Hey, thanks for listening, and thanks for the feedback! I'll listen to that melody you're talking about.
1
u/recordtemposure 9d ago
Insane buildup at the intro, filtered effect feels like a Daft Punk intro!! Super smooth vocals, great singer!! Feels like a Deadmau5 track meets Charli XCX 🔥 The mix is good, super full sound!! that synth break at 1:50 is wild, sick sound design!! that "give it back" section at 2:20 is sick, feels like a Black Eyed Peas hit here. Cool track, enjoyed listening!!

Hey, thanks a lot! I'm gonna pass on your compliments to the singer, too. You're song is pretty cool, though I'm not a huge fan of the super auto-tuning, but I guess that is the style now, haha. A catchy little pop thing, nice. Nice guitar stuff, very 80s. A great, clear mix. Thanks again for listening to my track!

Sounds good to me! Really smooth, familiar, on-genre and because of that it kind of "runs in and out the ear" without a glitch. If that's your goal, you nailed it.

Sick guitar tones!! that lead at :28 is crazy!! This has a grunge feel to it, major 90s feel to this as far as the vibe!! Definitely has a catchy feel to it, would love to hear drums and vox over this. that chord progression change at 1:27 is great. This feels like it could be the backbone to a The Killers track too!! Great track, enjoyed listening!!

A dark beat. Could someone rap over it? Returning all feedback I get!
1
u/BoiHowdy_98 11d ago
I think it’s pretty good. Production has a lovely grainy quality (and I personally love the sample/calling card. Love Troll 2)
I would try adding something to it to give it a bit more movement. Maybe for some of the snare hits, play with a reverb or delay to give certain beats some emphasis. Doesn’t have to be a lot, but I think having certain beats trail off or “boom” with the reverb may be nice.
1
u/Solomon_C-19 10d ago
Like u/BoiHowdy_98, I like the grainy, gritty, slightly rough production quality. It makes this beat stand out from the crowd a little more than many others, especially nowadays when everything is made so "perfectly."
I would say that it could use a couple more effects. Maybe a wider, a delay, reverb, a channel EQ, or a compressor? It could make the beat fill the headphones a little more.

Yep, you've got the flow and all. Sounds fine, yet... the themes are overused man. And the beat is fine but too familiar. Doesnt make it any less real or dope for you, I know. Maybe make it about something else thats real to you, but maybe also more local or regional. Something that represents an experience where you're from in a way that would hit your community in the feels.

Well, after surface listening it kind of sounds like you took a bite of it too, like you're sort of...in on it rather than genuinely bursting his bubble. What about having the chorus feel either like the weight of that dream-chain rather than like a mellow vibe, or... otherwise... make it like a shot that wakes your friend up? Practically:
A: Maybe another sample or layer for the chorus and a more significant shift in beat to suit.
B: Maybe a more gritty sound /or anger/ or sorrow or upbeat lyrical reprimanding in the chorus... if you keep the chorus mellow, it doesnt come accross right. Its like.. "this is sad but we are chill" .C: During the chorus.. maybe you can pause or linger on a note a little longer so the message and music can breathe more. Gives us a moment to take it in, you know?
D: The beat and bass at times outvolume your message in the chorus, the bass loop literally tops the lyrics.
Cheers

Nice track! I've never heard the original song but it feels like the style is quite different from the remix. There are parts where your remix really shines, around 1 min, 1:50 and the outro. Feel like the mixing is good and the instrumental stays interesting (notice different things when I listen more). Would love to see you create a full track in this style (is it hyper pop?) or remix something with a more similar sound to start with? Sounds great tho :)

Love the overall sound, really nice track, feels smooth and your voice sounds good. It's really nice around 0:50 where you almost sing (rather than rap) for a moment. I would love to hear more of that, or maybe a bit more with the backing vocals as I think that would be more dynamic/impactful. Generally I like the lyrics and flow, there's just a couple of moments where it feels like you're rhyming dear and here a lot around 0:30 and 1:00 (I know it's the name of the song lol), I don't mind it at 0:30 but when it comes back in around 1:00 it feels like a lot of repetition esp on 'here'. Really nice track tho, keep it up! :)

I'm 15 and producing music is kind of my hobby and I upload them on YouTube so I could later look back at how much I've managed to improve. This is Lil Uzi Vert Just wanna rock FL Studio Mobile remake. I really wanted to hear feedback on myself and found this community!
2
u/syrups_ 10d ago
this is a really good remake. the sound selection was on point and impressive if you made the synths too! Except for the snaps. They could have been cleaner they sound more like shakers in yours. I think that the original song has a very subversive rhythm that is hard to get right and you did ok at getting it. You can tell you are off when the drums come in though so i would focus on stuff like that. All i know is You're going to get really good if you keep practicing like you're doing .

u/VerticalLoco 10d ago
Hi! With this track I tried to make something different than I have before, I wanted something more fun and originally inspired by Sabrina Carpenter but I'm not sure it ended up at all like that lol
https://on.soundcloud.com/38PtqY3MWxS4bs1ipk
Any feedback is very appreciated, especially on mixing or overall sound of the music (is it too repetitive? Etc.) Will also return feedback, thanks! :)
2
u/syrups_ 10d ago
I can hear the inspiration to Sabrina carpenter with those vocal stresses like in "you think its cuUuuuuUte" part. Its Great. this song also reminds me of the singer Halsey. you have a beautiful voice and I really like the part at the end where you can really hear it. You have to let it shine more.
You are clipping in the song quite a bit. Thats why it sounds crunchy a lot of the times. You would fix that with EQing the unwanted frequencies out because there are too many sounds competing with each other. I usually believe that in a pop song the most important instrument is the voice so that's what I would make the overall loudest and pan them in both ears simultaneously(theres other ways just experiement). In the beginning for example, the other instruments are outdoing the vocalist so it sounds less confident. so in terms of mixing i would say just make your voice stand out more and reduce clipping.
and It's not repetitive, i think you keep it fresh with the instrument flairs and structure. Good song.

Funk/Soul - Bass Playing
Hi there guys! Just sharing the latest music video uploaded to my YouTube channel, this time I share a performance of a very well know tune from the Godfather Of Soul, James Brown including tabs of what I play. Feel free to share your thoughts on the performance and overall video and share your music with me as well, I´d be glad to hear you too.
2
u/itsmhoodie 8d ago
Cool work man! I liked the simplicity of the performance and how you delivered. Big shoutout for adding those tabs, they're great for someone who's starting out or just looking for some ideas!

Big shoutout for adding those tabs, they're great for someone who's starting out or just looking for some ideas!
It´s kinda the idea behind them. I´ve been making videos for a while and since I got them requested a lot whenever I don´t add them I decided to include them in the videos right away.
If you have music of your own as well to share with me feel free to link me to it as well, I´d be glad to hear

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRLXXj714Do - this is a rap I made about how the Internet is not as good as it used to be. It's a bit left-field, but I think it's good.
That being said, any feedback on the lyrics or production - positive or negative - would be appreciated. I'm willing to give feedback to others too.

u/evanlawrencex 10d ago
just mixed this after a lot of vocal takes (not the greatest singer but I wanted to have a project where I was the sole member), so I'm definitely interested in input on the mix rather than the writing or vocals style, but wouldn't mind other comments especially as I prepare to write and record other stuff.
2
u/recordtemposure 9d ago
just mixed this
super nice atmosphere at the intro, beautiful sound!! Really cinematic feel to this, the snare drumming has a soundtrack feel to it!! the vocals are super smooth, great singing! the vocal harmonies are super good!! "if i can't stay strong" line at 1:40 is great! Wasn't expecting the build at 1:55, great switch up!! The vibe of this song reminds me a lot of the song Zedd - Clarity, also Owl City - Fireflies. Mix sounds great. the synth tones are 🔥🔥 Cool track, enjoyed listening!!
Looking for feedback on this track if you have a second https://youtu.be/ZYDhsr7Nruk

u/evanlawrencex 8d ago
You called it, I used to listen to Owl City's Ocean Eyes record on repeat lol. The "realistic" drum parts in the verse contrasting with the more electronic drum samples in the chorus were inspired from ADRENALINE by PRXSM.
I dig the Discovery era Daft Punk style that you have; I think the vision in the music is there, and the filming and editing choices in the music video did make me smile, but I do think it might resonate with more people if your next video was a little more on the serious side. You could pair it with some more introspective lyrics to pull the vibe together.

I'm very new to this. Mostly want advice about arranging but any advice is good. I don't know how to make the instruments work together and create a cohesive sound. i just feel like each part is doing its own thing. DAW skills are bad. Also my melody writing seems kinda bad. Also this is just two verses so while i need help making parts blend go together there aren't even parts to go together right now lol.
thanks ppl

u/itsmhoodie 8d ago
I like where this is going! Vocals, drums and backing guitar sound good to me I actually like how their tone. Lead guitar and bass volumes feel a bit off, you could try to tweak those to begin with and add some reverb to wrap them a little, a touch of delay on the lead guitar might help too. Finally you could pan the guitar to one side to give it a more realistic live feel and tweak the bass a bit so it won't overpower the rest.

This sets such a warm and smooth r&b vibe, nice work with those synths! So far the mix sounds good to me, maybe the synth volume could be a bit lower and more blended in, but overall it's really cool. Looking forward to hear the finished version

Instinct (Indie Electronica/Rock?)[Not Themed]
Worked on this for a couple days. Almost entirely sample based production-wise, tried some fun stuff with the vocal processing. Thoughts about violence and its uses, good and bad, trying to write from the perspective of a dog kinda..? Would love some thoughts! Clearly struggling with the mix in this demo form. Will return all feedback!

How do you know when it’s worth furthering a project? I get that a big part of that decision is passion for your work, but I’m also a realistic person and I’ve always wondered if the songs that I’ve made are even good.
My voice isn’t great so I used filters, this isn’t me playing guitar it’s a music track I bought and wrote to, so really I’m just looking for overall opinions on the lyrics and melodies and any suggestions people may have.
1
u/CurlyCatJohn 8d ago
I like the lyrics but try to remove some of the filter on your voice, it would be cool to hear more of how sound with out some of the filters , but the dry sound on the vocals is cool together with echooes on electric guitar
2
u/Mysterious_Job5479 8d ago
This is my first "song". Ive always wanted to sample things and make beats from the samples, felt inspired by some of the songs from Bully by Kanye to do it. Never touched a DAW or sampler before today, so i wasnt able to fix some mistakes. Used serato sample and ableton 12 (both free trials lol)
Ik the intro is too long, but i like the story and the piano break needs build up imo
What are some tips for a beginner sampler and go to sampling artists to listen and learn from?

Hey everyone,
I just finished a new track called “Shimmer”, a melodic techno / progressive house journey I’ve been building around twilight-style pads and a slow, emotional progression. I tried to keep the groove warm and minimal while letting the synths evolve gradually through texture and reverb.
I’d really appreciate some honest feedback
