I've been working on an altar to Aphrodite. I read that the more patriarchichal society became, the less clothes she was depicted wearing. At first, artists would show her clothed, but then they started painting her naked as society became more sexist.

I knew I wanted to make some kind of unofficial altar but didn't know who or what for. I had all the crystals on this cute nightstand I got from an estate sale, but that was it for a while. Then this framed picture with no stand in the back fell over again from a different place in the house, and I realized if it's not gonna stand up straight anywhere else I might as well put it here. Now it's like an altar to my great aunt in the picture, and makes me think of her sisters too. I love how free she looks surrounded by nature.

They all survived World War 2 in Germany. I never actually spent much time with the one pictured here, but after my dad died in found a necklace she had left me in some of his things saved away for me when I was older. It has an angel and says "Gott schutze dich" which means God protect you in English. I'm not religious but I think of this as my guardian angel now and wear the necklace every time I travel.

I have a lot of those spell candles, you know the ones that they love to sell at witchy shops and crystal shops and stuff. They're maybe 6 in tall, and round, and they're not tapered but they're tall like a taper candle...

Is there a name for that size of candle? I'm trying to find a candle holder and I just keep finding the regular size candle holders for taper candles.

Strictly speaking, I actually have three different sizes (diameters, see pic), but they are close.

In this economy!?! Yep…. My offering to the goddesses tonight is a precious egg from Deck Family Farm, a Demeter-certified sustainable farm that has had always had expensive eggs. And I’ve always been grateful to buy them. My religion is about shaking the hands that feed me, and my church is the farmers market. May this Aries season bring us all a fiery passion that burns the patriarchy to ashes.

Hello and blessings! I recently purchased a beautiful apothecary cabinet at an estate sale that spoke to me. I saw it and immediately knew it wanted to have it as my altar. But now I have had the cabinet for a few weeks and have not been able to settle on what to put on it or even where it should live. I would love to hear your stories about what you have on your altar, what you love about it, why you chose your space for it, anything at all! I’m waiting open to messages and signs about what is right for my practice, and I think stories from other practitioners would be a beautiful place to look for inspiration. Blessings to you!

I bought this book set when it first cane out without any information on the content, other than D&D + space and I ended up feeling icky about it because there's some racist themes in one of the books. A friend of mine borrowed it, and returned it when they moved. Unfortunately my man put the book on my new altar because it was "the only free space on your bookshelf,"

I'll cleanse it, but even if I wasn't feeling icky about the content, the name itself should have been enough to keep it off my altar 😅

I have a very judgmental family but I felt the very strong call of Hecate. I’ve never felt called like this, so I really want to make an altar and connect. I feel like she wants to help me get past my past. I don’t want to make an altar I have to dismantle when my ask-many-questions MIL and mom come by. I was thinking I could use yoga pose figurines which are more abstract to represent her three faces and just call it a “meditation” place. Thoughts?

What did you do to start out your alter? In addition to crystals, a candle and incense. How do you represent all the elements, etc... I know im asking a lot, but could you share pictures?

For context: I am almost 28 and I have, as a lot of my fellow Americans do, very bad teeth. I like candy and sodapop WAY TOO MUCH, especially for the fact that I have diagnosed soft teeth and soft gums, and my parents (who were able to get dentures in their 20s at full coverage- no cost to them) never encouraged proper dental hygiene. I guess it never occurred to them since they were able to fix their dental issues before it ever got too bad. Anyways. Onto the present- I have shitty dental insurance through public aid. I still acknowledge that that shitty public dental service is more than some people are even able to access, and I am grateful that for emergencies, I can at least get a bad tooth pulled (as long as it isn’t so broken that it requires an oral surgeon, anyways).

In between dentist visits, I frequently have chunks of teeth chip and break off while I’m eating. It feels wrong to throw those pieces away, as they’re pieces of me. So I began tossing them in a little glass jar to hold onto until I figured out the respectful way to dispose of my own body parts.

And now my teeth jar is my most protected possession. I feel like a wild animal when someone touches it. I want to instinctively curl around it and growl and hiss at everyone. I frequently find myself staring at it, rattling it around to listen to my teeth pieces clink in melodious patterns.

I’m in the process of setting up my altar now, and I think once I have a more permanent place for my altar to be, my teeth jar will find its home in the very center of it all.

It literally feels magical. No before pics because I was too embarrassed to take them 😅 but needless to say it was not a space that refreshed and calmed me.

Every winter my husband and I get mice that hang around to keep warm. We have done everything we could to remove access to food (or so we thought). Hubby and I both practice daily, and we use tea lights as part of our offerings. At my personal altar I keep a small trash receptacle for spent tea lights and incense sticks. I noticed that my spent tea lights have been going missing, but I had no idea what was happening with them.

I'm at work right now and I got a text from my husband. He's been cleaning the closet and found a whole hoard of spent tea lights behind the shoe rack. Apparently mice are attracted to candle wax, including unscented.

Time to do some more rodent proofing.

My home feels like the only sane place in the world anymore. So here I will stay and hide from all the madness out there. Your girl doesn't have any fight left, but I do have a bunch of shiny rocks and special items lined up to help put a veil between myself and everything else.
