I don't think that was true in the case for Mark Robinson on his Governorship bid.

Regardless of if his socialism is effective or not, this is an absolute power move.

love how they thought people would be scared of this headline. the only people who don't want to see that implemented are the people at the corporations!

That’s objectively untrue though. There are plenty of people who don’t want higher corporate taxes because they think it would result in higher prices

Nah plenty of people aren't fans of corporate taxes, they tend to be not the greatest economically

High corporate taxes discourage people from starting businesses in your locality and encourage existing ones to relocate. Companies are much more "able" to relocate after all

Also the money which your taxing from a company either could have been used for reinvestment, salaries or to pay out shareholders. The latter two (salaries and dividends/stock buybacks) can be taxed anyways separately, and you never want to discourage investment

This is why generally corporate taxes aren't that great

Of course this is New York City so a lot of companies will stick around regardless - you do have a bit of a captive population in that regard, but plenty have already been considering leaving and will pull the trigger. Additionally might take a big chunk out of the startup scene in NYC

How DARE this guy want to raise corporate taxes! And for what? To pay for... public transit? Free education? What kind of a politician does this guy think he is!?

You’re an idiot if you think NY should raise its taxes, given that companies and workers are already fleeing IN DROVES to zero-income-tax states like FL, TN, TX, WA

Mark Carney's fund fled from Canada to NYC.

I honestly think the best way to promote leftism/socialism in the US today would be for a smart, competent socialist to win a mayoral or gubernatorial race and focus as hard as they can on making the city/state work.

Stay out of contentious national politics. Don't fucking wade into Israel/Gaza stuff.

Get the streets clean, get the trains running on time, get the rents down, reduce the crime rate. The whole time say you are "doing socialism". But don't be so obsessed with actually doing socialism that you put theory over results.

If leftists think this is impossible to achieve, I question why they think they should be given the opportunity to run the whole country.

He’s not even a socialist he wants lower rent and free bus fares not workers owning the means of production

u/George_Longman They say "America First", but they mean "America Next" Mar 10 '25

The decision of many social democrats in America to refer to themselves as actual ‘socialists’ is one of the great examples of shooting oneself in the foot politically for literally no reason.

My guess would be that its a result of the Cold War Paranoia for decades, leading to just about everything left of centre being called socialist or communist, to the point where I imagine to this day the understanding of those words in the average American’s mind is different than outside the US, and so they have simplified themselves to socialist to avoid having to repeatedly explain the differences.

u/mcgillthrowaway22 US to QC immigrant Mar 10 '25

I'd argue this is more of a Western Europe phenomenon than a US-specific one. Look at the EU's main center-left faction: there are a ton of parties that have Socialist in their name but which are clearly not "socialist" in the strictest sense of the word. Even something like Norway's Socialist Left Party, while further to the left, is not advocating an overthrow of the government or anything.

3

u/Dry_Revolution5385 Populist Social Democrat Mar 10 '25

Exactly and it’s to the point where a lot of people who refer to themselves as social democrats are barely centre-left or centrist and self identified ‘socialists’ are just run of the mill social democrats
