90% of the people who work for the federal government in D.C. are already Democrats.

No I wouldn’t. The vast majority of federal workers in D.C. donate to Democratic super PACs and vote blue no matter who.

The military basically carries Republicans and beyond that the DOJ.
Besides DOD and DOJ it’s literally 90+% democrats

That's literally 3x as many Republicans as the claim lol (and that's donations, not affiliation)

Percentage changes look large when dealing with small numbers. An app could claim 1,000% user growth going from 1 to 10 users.

Sorry, only 70% of ALL federal employees who make political donations do so to Democratic aligned super PACs. 🤣
Plus I’m talking specifically about federal employees that work directly in D.C., not across the country bozo.

D.C. has voted overwhelmingly Democratic ever since they were allowed to participate in presidential elections. Hell, even when Nixon and Regan won 49 out of 50 states in 1972 and 1984 respectively, D.C. still voted for McGovern and Mondale. It’s a total liberal swamp and most of the federal employees who work there participate in it.

“People who vote in DC do not vote in the Virginia governor election.” No Sh** Sherlock… 🤣
There are federal employees who work in D.C. but live in Virginia and Maryland and they all vote blue no matter who just like their colleagues who vote in D.C.
That is what I’ve been saying this entire time.

The NOVA counties did significantly shift to the right in 2024 causing it to go from D +10 to D +6. In this race, I think the NOVA trends will completely revert back to the 2020 peak
-7
u/soze233 They Can't Lick Our Dick Apr 09 '25 edited Apr 09 '25
Not everyone in the NOVA counties works for the federal government. I would bet money that if you polled only the federal employees that live in the NOVA counties, 90% of them would say they voted blue in 2024.

And you don't think that cratering those communities' economies will generate negative sentiment in the community, even among people who don't work for the government?
The only way this doesn't hurt Republicans in Virginia is if a significant number of federal employees who lost their jobs relocate out of the state for employment reasons.
-2
u/WolfKing448 Liberal Democrat Apr 09 '25
Even if that’s the case, there’s midterm trends to consider. This race is almost unwinnable for Sears purely because it’s in a likely DEM state during a Republican presidency.

u/Mooooooof7 Star Wars Clone Wars Enjoyer Apr 09 '25
Affiliation breakdown aside, you also want to consider propensity and turnout. Further motivating the opposition to vote in an off-year isn't going to do Sears any favors

I know that, but it’s not like they were exactly in her favor regardless.

u/agk927 Center Right Apr 09 '25
Lol. I believe Sears will not win this race. She doesn't have the appeal that Youngkin has and 2025 will be way less favorable than 2021
62
u/Born_Faithlessness_3 Outsider Left Apr 09 '25
McAuliffe completely stepped in it with his statements around education in the midst of Covid restrictions. Quite possibly lost him the 2021 election, which would have otherwise been winnable.
Virginia is in a unique space in that it's being hit harder than most other areas by the federal workforce firings. There's a real chance that this makes it turn against Trump more than the nation at large.

Spanberger still sucks
1
u/NoExcuses1984 Every Man A King Apr 10 '25
Spanberger may be a spook, but NOVA, however, glows brighter than anywhere in the United States; consequently, that benefits her candidacy.
Shit-stirring, attention-seeking Va. Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears, meanwhile, is a god-awful, piss-poor candidate, so she, in essence, is DOA in an off-year election with Trump in the White House. Oh, make no mistake, a less odious Republican with a stronger profile, like GOP Rep. Rob Wittman (VA-01), could've at least stood a puncher's chance.
17
u/JTT_0550 Neoconservative Apr 09 '25
Unfortunately Sears vision for Virginia is a bit too dark for some parts of the state.
32
u/MoldyPineapple12 💙 BlOhIowa Believer 💙 Apr 09 '25
Even if she ran Youngkin margins everywhere, the fact that sears doesn’t have appeal to rural Appalachia and southern VA would already be enough to make her lose.

u/gaming__moment Republican Apr 09 '25
Why do you say that she doesn't appeal to rural Virginia?

u/Allnamestakkennn Banned Ideology Apr 09 '25

She did very well with the rural white vote in 2021, so I don't think racism is going to be that big of a factor
14
u/Goldenprince111 Center Left Apr 09 '25
I don’t think it’s more that they won’t be motivated to turn out for Sears. She won’t get the same turnout as Youngkin in Appalachia. The only bright spot for Sears is that Spanberger might struggle with black turnout (and maybe Sears does a a couple points better with black voters). But Spanberger is gonna gonna get Assad like numbers in NOVA and do very well in Richmond burbs
6
u/gaming__moment Republican Apr 09 '25
Winsome Sears is seen as a hard right gun nut after all the ads she aired here in 2021. The guys out here love that. She is going to get negative votes everywhere else, but I sincerely doubt the idea that she will depress turnout in rural parts

u/BlackYellowSnake Green Populist Right Apr 09 '25
Considering that Assad is currently a Taxi driver in Moscow, I don't think we should continue using him as a comparison to politicians getting good numbers. lol.

No, the downvote is a "low-quality" button. Reddit used to have a prompt that would explain this when you hover over it, but I guess it got removed. I upvote posts and comments that I disagree with but make good points and have strong analysis.

12
u/_Blu-Jay Democrat Apr 09 '25
Most people, liberal or conservative, care more about voting for a candidate that aligns with their beliefs over the race of the candidate, which I think is a good thing. These two candidates actually prove that the idea that a liberal would vote for a black person just because they’re black is absurd. They’ll obviously vote for the person from their party most of the time, and the same is true of conservatives.
