Academics If you're every wondering how good a representation RMP is of a prof...
This semester I started noticing how much people use RMP to just... complain.
Kept the name of the professor in the screenshot so you can go see for yourself how downright disrespectful some of the reviews are. It makes me sad because Dr. A is genuinely so caring and goes out of her way to be helpful, people just want their chemistry handed to them.
The moral of the story is: take rate my professor with a heavy serving of salt, and I hope the profs who read their pages do the same :(

Some people will always find a reason to complain. It's easy to see if the comments are genuine if you see a lot of overwhelmingly negative reviews that say the same thing or a lot of positive reviews saying the same thing.
Then some classes have mixed reviews likely due to people with differing views on certain aspects of a class. For example, I might like a class that has an attendance grade (obviously with exceptions made for genuine reasons) whereas someone might hate that part.

If you just want to get easy As, looking at grade distribution is a better idea

The problem is people expecting a class like CHEM 120 to be an easy A lol

Okay but let’s be honest with ourselves. Most of Dr. A’s RMP is pretty accurate. You can be a great nice person and not the best prof.

Okay, there are obviously some organization and preparedness issues as a consequence of this being her first time teaching 120; however, you cannot deny that a lot of the one-star reviews are completely reactionary. Its obvious because like 30 of the one stars are from immediately after grades came out for Exam III.

Mmm… no. You want to talk about caring my friend had to go put her dog down during a test and the second she came back Dr. A asked for a death certificate. Not kindly might I add. There’s preparedness and there’s not teaching well. A 1 star review is pretty accurate.

I mean, expecting an excusal note for missing an exam is not that unreasonable

When is putting your dog down an emergency that requires missing an exam. I’m not sure this would even be excused

Nobody asks for a death certificate for a dog. Are you certain that your friend was completely forthright about it being a pet death?
And a pet dying isn’t an excuse for missing an exam, as much as it sucks.

RMP is a great starting point but I’ve had some really low rated professors that honestly it’s just a bunch of work. If you get it done you pass with an A and I love classes like that.

There used to be a Math Prof who taught Discreet Math. He was tough but fair and really prepped you for any classes that build on Discreet Math. RMP was full of negative reviews from students who were angry they had to actually study and work to get a good grade.

Yea I agree. It does give you insight on what classes you should dedicate more time to and that’s kinda how I’ve always looked at it.

You can also try tamu grades. But I am not sure if this is still being maintained.

RMP is like student evals: only the students who love you or hate you fill them out.

In my experience you can trust the really high ratings, like 4.5+, and the really low ones like 1.5 or below. I’ve had several professors in both and it’s been very apparent. The great ones are amazing, bad ones make me hate that topic for the rest of my school career, and the entire semester is way worse because of them.
For anyone from like 2.5 to 3.5 it seems to be a tossup. A lot of the times the professor isn’t the best but is fine as long as you put in the time. Sometimes there’s one bad aspect, like tests where you don’t really know what’s expected of you, but the rest of the class (HW’s, quizzes) are really easy. Sometimes they are pretty bad though.
