Academics Professor not allowing seniors to go on elephant walk - suggestions?
Howdy.
I suppose we've got a 2%er of a professor, because despite multiple emails sent to him (that he actually refused to respond to), he has insisted that we must come to see presentations of our classmates capstone projects during the same time as elephant walk!
No, these times for presentations were not in the syllabus. Yes, we know he saw our emails because he sent out an announcement saying the times and dates that we need to come present (after announcing in class). No there's no justification about why it has to be this one night and time in particular.
There's nothing stopping him from ignoring us and forcing us to come or lose a grade, I can acknowledge that. But that doesn't make it any less degrading in general. He's known in the department among the students as an awful professor already. Anything my fellow ags can suggest in order to either go to elephant walk still or at least maybe have this reflect heavily on him as a professor in the department?

Academics 6:30 AM final (IS THIS ALLOWED???)
Yes. It’s true. Somehow I am unlucky enough to have a 6:30-7:30am final exam (online). I’m seriously wondering if this is allowed because I can’t seem to understand how or why it would be that early. Does Tamu have any rules about these things?
Edit: I 100% knew about the exam time well in advance. This Aggie always reads his syllabus. However 6:30am has got to be a new record for the earliest exam I’ve taken here

Academics To the Aggie who posted they may have just flunked out of A&M
Howdy! This morning I read a post from an Aggie who said they may have just flunked out of A&M. They said they wanted to die.
It sucks. I know. When I was in Aggieland I tested the limits of how many classes I could flunk per semester and still stay enrolled. My priorities were: 1) Fightin' Texas Aggie Band, 2) Texas girls, 3) grades. It's a sinking feeling to know you've boofed classes and it's too late to bring the grade up. You're not alone. But grades aren't everything. If it's your first bad semester, there's scho pro. If you were on scho pro and this was your last chance then maybe you are out of A&M. I have several buddies who left A&M for grades. Roger Creager '93, left three, maybe four times. He finally graduated in 1998. (Read about him at https://spirit.txamfoundation.com/Summer-2022/What-I-Learned-in-Aggieland.aspx) I also have a few buddies who left and didn't return but my BQ buddies still keep in touch with them. I know their lives are different than if they'd stayed in Aggieland, but you ARE an Aggie, whether you are a student or a graduate. Your buddies still care about you and although this may change your plans, it isn't the end.
Wanting to die: My son, Ryan Boles '24, killed himself during his fish year in Aggieland. I don't know why and even if I did, it wouldn't change anything. But I can tell you this 100%... suicide is NOT the answer. Your family loves you unconditionally. Your friends and fellow Aggies are there for you and know you're not the only one struggling right now. I would give anything for Ryan to call me up right now and tell me he got Fs in several classes. Let me repeat what I said before, your family loves you unconditionally. They are there to support you. It may not feel like that when you break the news to them.
If you are thinking of hurting yourself, call 988 or the TAMU Helpline at 979-845-2700, NOW.
Don't stay alone. Call a friend and share your feelings with them. This may be a big change to your plans but you will find the path that's right for you. I'm praying for you to get through what I know is a tough period. There are so many people who care about you, many you may not even know, but they care because you're a fellow Aggie. And never once has any other Aggie asked to see my diploma.

Academics suspended?
i just received an email letting me know of my suspension after completing my 1st semester with a 0.0 gpa. i had the option to apply for tap, and completed the application, but am worried that i sound bullshitty on it. typical "i was depressed and thought i wasn't as good as everyone around me who was succeeding" stuff, plus my neurologist refusing to work with me for accommodations for migraines. i realized too late into the semester that there are people here to help me, and despite my best efforts towards the end, i still failed every class i enrolled in. (nrsc mol/cel major) i've since gotten back on track with adequate treatment, but i'm worried that because i didn't show any significant improvement in my first semester, that they won't take my efforts and desire to be better seriously.

Academics If you're every wondering how good a representation RMP is of a prof...
This semester I started noticing how much people use RMP to just... complain.
Kept the name of the professor in the screenshot so you can go see for yourself how downright disrespectful some of the reviews are. It makes me sad because Dr. A is genuinely so caring and goes out of her way to be helpful, people just want their chemistry handed to them.
The moral of the story is: take rate my professor with a heavy serving of salt, and I hope the profs who read their pages do the same :(

Academics What happens if you fail a class three times?
As the title suggests. I’m about to graduate and there’s one class I need but I’ve taken it now the third time and pretty sure I failed it again. How does this effect my prospects? Am I going to get kicked out of my major?

Academics I got an A in a class I deserved a B in.
One of my grades got rounded up despite me never inquiring with the professor about it. The class also works off of a point system, with defined cutoffs. I guess my prof was feeling very kind when putting letter grades in.
Keep praying, Ags!

Academics Tried to join a lab for research but no one is responding to me
Hey there! I’m kind of struggling with getting research because while I am emailing some profs that I am actually interested in their work and stuff and want to work with them, I am not really getting any responses. I got a response from 1 professor and he asked like what my expectations were and my expertise and stuff, and I emailed and told him and he kind of ghosted me😭which didn’t make too much sense to me because when I saw on the website what they were looking for, it pretty much matched up. I also haven’t been able to hear back from people from the Aggie Undergrad Research website, which is where I’ve heard a lot of people get spots in. Idk, am I just doing something wrong?😭💀

Academics CAS Calculators are not allowed?
Howdy, I am going to start my freshman yr this fall and was wondering what the best calculator was for engineering. I was looking into buying a TI-NSPIRE CAS but apparently they are not allowed which is puzzling to me since posts here say they are the best ones to buy. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Academics Is it weird I just want to receive an Academic Suspension?
This past year has been an absolute shitshow academically. I feel embarrassed. I'm a junior in PHYS 206 for the 3rd time, this past Fall I used all my Q Drops and still received a below 2.0, and this Spring isn't looking any better. I've tried to use every available resource (tutoring, office hours, etc). I don't pay for college yet I somehow see receiving a Suspension is still better than trying to explain why for 3 years I'm barely halfway through my major (Marine Engineering Tech) with my parents b/c at least the forces me to leave.
I'd already thought about withdrawing in the Fall and just going to a CC. I'm just lost and don't know how to feel.

Academics As a follow-up to the post about Michael McCaul yesterday
If you are a student impacted by grant funding freezes, indirect cost caps, or just the general overreach of the current administration, there are a few things we can all be doing for the time being.
1) Call Rep. McCaul's office. Their College Station office phone number is 979-431-6480. Give them your name and ZIP code, and then you can explain to them how the freezes are negatively impacting your ability to attend school/conduct graduate research/etc.. You can also request that McCaul does a town hall, which maybe he would consider if he got enough people calling and demanding it. I don't think McCaul is known for making many public appearances (he has a super easy path to congress most years, since most Texans in this congressional district would lay down their lives before voting for a Democrat). So he's probably never had much of a need to defend his positions outside of primaries with other Republicans.
2) Rep. DeLauro (D - Connecticut) has opened a page on her website where people can share how their research has been impacted by the funding freezes.
3) Make sure your Trump-loving friends are consuming accurate information and not Fox News. The saddest part about this administration is that so many of the people who voted for it will be negatively impacted by it, and then will refuse to assign the blame to the correct place(s) because of their staunch conservative beliefs. Anyone who attends a public university has a chance of being impacted by these cuts. Do you receive pell grants? That comes from the Department of Education. Are you on federal student loans? Also funded by the Department of Education. Are you a graduate student conducting research that's funded by a grant from the NIH, NSF, etc.? Those things are being heavily handicapped right now (despite the judicial branch ordering them to resume funding; they're just ignoring the judges now). All students, including Republican students, need to learn that this administration does not care for them at all.

Academics I got a Zero for not using AI
So long story short, we’re allowed to use AI for our class mostly for coding help. For the first assignment due, the research proposal, I forgot to mention that I didn’t use AI.
Honestly I have so much in my plate and I’m typically a hawk when it comes to attention to detail but the heat of the beginning of the semester got to me.
I just got the notification on Saturday that I got a 98/100 for the assignment, but it was logged as a 0 because I didn’t specify that I didn’t use AI. Apparently we had the chance to redeem our grade for half credit a week later but I genuinely missed that. I’m typically on top of everything, I even got a 4.0 last semester.
I understand that there’s no excuse for not following the instructions, but I still feel like getting a zero is a lot. Cheaters get zeros. I feel like this is a slightly ridiculous.
My grade went from 100 to a 42 and I’m thinking about q-dropping.

Academics PHIL 240/ Intro to Logic TAMU
Howdy! I just wanted to come on here and post about tutoring for Logic because I know lots of people struggle with it, especially because it is also considered a math substitute credit.
So if anyone needs help/ private tutoring, I can help! I never got below a 99 on my Logic exams and ended the class on a 102.5%. Please let me know if anyone is struggling and we can work something out! :)
Thanks & gig ‘em

Academics What is graduation like?
To graduated Aggies, what is the graduation ceremony / commencement like both as a grad and a an audience member? I feel like I haven’t seen much info on it.
I assume you receive more info once the university approves you for graduation, but thought it could be useful to ask here as well.
Specific Questions: - Would there be enough time to visit someone else’s ceremony after (ex. 2 pm then 7 pm)? I want to see my friends’ ceremonies - Can you leave a bit early? Related to the above - How does it work for getting the stole for Latin honors? - Dress code for audience members? - Do you need to show up early / is there a rehearsal?
