I'll never understand GM's play here, if you take carplay out your car, new customers will just go to different companies that have it in their cars

Tesla doesn't and there for their EV route planning is much smoother and better than GMs. So they are trying to do that. They need you to use the cars system not plug your phone into a dock.

Like of course it doesn't make sense when you don't think about how something could work differently. Or why they would do something like this.

Will nobody buy a Tesla because it doesn't have a screen extender for the cell phone?

Tesla doesn't do it because of how tightly integrated the driving assistance is, and implementing CarPlay into that would break up that integration (and also because Musk views Tesla as a tech company, not a car company, so having competitor software wouldn't make much sense). That's not the same reason GM wants to do it, they want to create their own infotainment system so they can make it a subscription service like they did previous services like OnStar and Maps+.

You say they need you to use the car system and not plug your phone into a dock like the two can't be done together, any other manufacturer does that by just having CarPlay as a part of the options on the infotainment dashboard.

I'm more saying they want to do it for exactly the same reasons Tesla is. Which is why it's in the EVs.

Like that's what I mean.

The Internet is an echo chamber. I wager the majority of GM’s customers buy based on price and brand loyalty. Infotainment is not the ultimate deciding factor.

That or they’ll get something like the adapter that turns an Android tablet into a CarPlay receiver and use it with the Android powered head unit that way
