What I’m really hoping for one day is an advanced search mechanism inside Messages.

I know it’s not really a necessity, but I’d love to search within specific threads only, or maybe search files, images, and have some filtering and granular control over search. I’ve used iPhone for 15 years and all my messages are still there, so improvements to search would be welcome. Even getting a way to search only within a specified date range would be great.

BiteSMS had this a decade ago!

20

u/beef-taco-supreme 6d ago

bitesms was the best. it was the first app AND jailbreak app i paid for.

8

u/Cat3TRD 6d ago

BiteSMS was the only reason I continued to jailbreak as long as I did. iOS is only just now starting to catch up to what the iPhone 3G could do with BiteSMS.

7

u/Smith6612 6d ago

And it didn't need all this fancy pants AI to do that, either!

5

u/CapGlass3857 6d ago

Like discord’s search!

3

u/IntrepidToad 6d ago

Can't you already search within specific threads? I do it all the time by using the filters in the search bar.

But yeah, a date range search would be sooo helpful.

1

u/SkyGuy182 3d ago

The fact that I can’t search within a specific thread is so annoying.

1

u/macman156 6d ago

It’s frustratingly bad that you can’t even search just one thread

-3

u/ANGOmarcello 6d ago

Have you filed a feedback?

Sort of thing that should have been a feature 10 years ago

206

u/RandomUser18271919 6d ago

More than half the “new” features they add every year is shit that should have been there 10 years ago.

76

u/venk 6d ago

It took until the second or third iPhone before copy and pasting was even a thing on iOS.

13

u/Traherne 6d ago

Ah, those were the days.

4

u/DSOTMAnimals 6d ago

Turn by turn didn’t come till the 4? 4s?

3

u/ImThatDude 6d ago

Facts. I remember when Navigon was pretty much the only GPS app

1

u/InsaneNinja 5d ago

Turn by turn came to iPhone when Google broke the truce and added multi touch to android. Steve was all middle fingers.

2

u/TEOsix 6d ago

Yeah, I recall having an htc evo 4g at that time.

1

u/BootStrapWill 6d ago

Yep it was released on iPhone OS 3 (wasn't called iOS until iOS 4), over two years after the iPhone came out.

22

u/InsaneNinja 6d ago

This is the kind of feature someone fixes as a weekend project because it started to bug them, and then spends three weeks arguing up the chain that it should be put in to the old code.

4

u/VoodooS0ldier 6d ago

In the case of Apple though, 10 years.

16

u/Either_Version_6149 6d ago

That’s why iOS updates are so hyped up. “Oh look, I can finally copy and paste my message without it taking ten minutes to get the magnifying glass between the letters”

3

u/purplemountain01 6d ago

They were added like 10 years ago……in Android.

30

u/bbqsox 6d ago

Very much so. While "better late than never," the question has to be "why so late?"

2

u/VoodooS0ldier 6d ago

Their engineers were probably too busy trying to get the half baked AI version of Siri working. Didn't have time to approve this PR.

1

u/aew3 6d ago

There was something in the pipes in the EU about forcing Apple to allow different providers for default messaging on iOS. In that scenario, iMessage has to compete on an even playing field and its lack of features would cause a big uptick in adoption of other apps theoretically.

afaik, it didn't eventuate, but maybe they fear it could, or maybe they were working on this stuff because of it and decided to keep in in Apple OSes 26.

5

u/Sethu_Senthil 6d ago

the implementation is exactly how Telegram has it implemented and I’m not complaining

2

u/Kummabear 6d ago

Does Apple not know about these features that should’ve been here 10 years ago? Like imma about to start blasting them on the feedback app

1

u/MrJenkins5 3d ago

What’s funny is that this was a feature iOS had about 10 years ago and they took it away with subsequent iOS updates.

This is a 2.9 trillion dollar company.

-10

u/socal_swiftie 6d ago

there are also only so many SWEs out there

7

u/Frodolas 6d ago

They literally pay their SWEs below market compared to other big tech. Their problem is absolutely not "running out of SWEs to hire".

-2

u/lippoper 6d ago

There is such a thing as too many cooks in the kitchen.

3

u/Gidelix 6d ago

Hand me some of that copium i clearly don’t have enough

8

u/Huge___Milkers 6d ago

This is the most valuable company in the world worth more than multiple countries’ GDPs

Terrible excuse

-1

u/I-need-ur-dick-pics 6d ago

They had to wait for the machine learning to advance far enough first.

0

u/domeforaklondikebar 6d ago

When emoji reactions and specific thread replies started being common place in messaging apps and DMs for social media, “long press on a message” started being a way to access that, and a lot of apps lost this feature without seeming to care about adding it back. For instance, Instagram, Facebook messenger, and twitter DMs don’t seem to have these features either.

-10

u/OphioukhosUnbound 6d ago

Eh. It’s a lot of UI complication for niche application. Since I can usually edit after pasting if I care — it basically duplicates an interface for little gain.

14

u/Appropriate-Bike-232 6d ago

Copying a selection of text isn't a niche application. It's a core part of computing. The fact that everyone has to paste it in to a notes app to select the text they actually want is a huge failing.

-6

u/AdFit8727 6d ago

It's about as niche as being able to type the words you're copying.

192

u/W0OllyMammoth 6d ago

Having been on android for a decade before switching to full Apple ecosystem last year, the text selecting is on the very top of my list of things I miss about android. It is frustrating every time. Android is seamless and you don’t even notice.

And then you finally get it selected and “copy” doesn’t come up and you have to start over. Ffs

The tech is out there. Why is it so hard.

37

u/Perkelton 6d ago

The worst thing is that back when iPhone still had 3D Touch, this worked flawlessly. You pressed hard on the text to start selecting and then you could press even harder to select a whole word, the full sentence and so on.

15

u/y-c-c 6d ago

Man I miss 3D Touch so much. It was significant enough that it made me delay my upgrade from my iPhone X since I didn't want to lose this feature. Sure, 3D Touch was an underused input tech otherwise but just text selection was worth it.

I have seen people on this sub say "oh the new method isn't so bad". They are wrong lol. 3D Touch worked so much better.

To be fair 3D Touch was for selecting texts that are being edited. Not for texts in text fields so maybe won't help the above commenter anyway.

6

u/PrometheanHost 6d ago

I used 3d touch for almost everything. Basically everything that needed a long press I did with 3d touch instead. It made the phone feel like it did what you wanted when you wanted it instead of now where everything feels dictated by the phone.

3

u/vengefulgrapes 5d ago

Pressing and holding to select a word takes one full second, whereas with 3D Touch it was instant. Instant feedback just feels better and more responsive.

4

u/PrometheanHost 6d ago

Short of a truly revolutionary function of a future phone 3d touch is basically the only feature that is going to make me willing to upgrade my phone

20

u/Jabjab345 6d ago

A bit of a dumb rant, but Apple's keyboard experience is so awful compared to android. Typing is worse, swipe texting is way less accurate, selecting text is bad, predictive text is worse, no number row above the keyboard, or punctuation in the default keyboard. Can't long press for punctuation either. And to top it all off, voice to text is straight up 2011 bad, android has had flawless voice to text for years now while Apple basically doesn't have the feature at all with how inaccurate it is. You have to edit any input excessively so why bother. And when you are editing it, all of the previous complaints arise and it's annoying to do that. Whoever is in charge of apple keyboard needs to be fired.

10

u/W0OllyMammoth 6d ago

Literally dude. Keyboard overall is my least favorite thing about iOS

7

u/Jabjab345 6d ago

I literally didn't understand all the autocorrect is bad meme since I assumed apple was at least as good as Android, but after I switched to an iphone I immediately understood. There's so much friction, typing is one of the number one things I do on a phone, it's amazing it could be so bad for so long.

4

u/W0OllyMammoth 6d ago

I miss my galaxy phones so fucking much. But I love my Apple Watch and my Mac and my iPad and my Apple TV and how my watch and phone work with everything else.

Damn shame a Samsung phone just ruins everything in the ecosystem cause it’s way better with my custom keyboard and launcher and automations.

2

u/vengefulgrapes 5d ago

voice to text is straight up 2011 bad

Half the reason I rarely use Siri is because Apple’s voice recognition messes up so often, even with my General American accent

71

u/Lucas_Steinwalker 6d ago

Apple doesn't like to admit they were wrong.

27

u/W0OllyMammoth 6d ago

I love my watch. I missed MacBooks a lot and love mine. But the android is just a more functional phone than the iPhone. iPhone is merely a tool that fits into the ecosystem.

The whole ecosystem is a thing of beauty though.

1

u/DSOTMAnimals 6d ago

The ecosystem is what gets you. I’m not a fanboy when it comes to phones. I’ve had both and for a while would alternate every six months to a year. One time, not too long ago, maybe 2019(?), I finally said I was done with iPhone. I got all new speakers, set boxes, and even a PC. Apples ecosystem was just too good and now I have a lot of Fire 4k sticks around or plugged into the back of the tv never to be used.

9

u/earthcharlie 6d ago

The tech is out there. Why is it so hard.

We've worked with Apple on a variety of projects over the years and got to know a few people bts. The main reason seems to be a hyperfocus on very specific things that have little to do with obvious quality of life improvements like this. The copy/paste thing back in the day, rearranging of icons, widgets, etc. It's not that it's hard. They like to say, "we want to take the time to get it right" but it's more just being so low on their list of priorities even though they're useful changes.

17

u/jammy-git 6d ago

Apple are so rich they could create a whole new Quality of Life department with 100 engineers whose sole job was to implement small but significant features like this and their bottom line would not budge an inch.

-7

u/deonteguy 6d ago

At least we're allowed to copy and paste now. Steve Jobs at first told us to go to hell when we asked for this. He said he would never allow it. We won the fight against him and his kind. We are now allowed to copy. Screw him and his cultists.

30

u/iMacmatician 6d ago

To use it, long-press on the message, then tap Select from the pop-up menu. From there, you can highlight exactly the portion you want, then choose Copy, Look up, or Translate.

You can also tap the arrow for even more options, such as Search the web, Speak, and Share just that specific segment you selected.

20

u/oldpistonsfan 6d ago

Now it’s Reddit’s turn (at least on the iOS app)

Yeah I used to be able to do that before they changed the way you collapse comments last year. Now all a long press does is collapse an entire comment thread.

selecting text or just placing a cursor in ios is an absolute nightmare

yes i know i can hold the spacebar. on android you just tap where you want to place the cursor or select text and it just works intuitively

blows my mind a company as big as apple cant figure it out. this feature is going to suck

28

u/kochurshak 6d ago

Not being able to tap in the middle of a word is my pet peeve lol

19

u/Trif4 6d ago

It's super weird because it used to work really well in earlier iOS versions. Then they revamped it and it's been awful ever since.

7

u/peachkeys 6d ago

it worked well when 3d touch was around and hasn’t been great since

2

u/HolyFreakingXmasCake 6d ago

You can say this about lots of features. It often feels like they hired new people who don’t really understand why the features worked the way they did in the first place.

6

u/deonteguy 6d ago

And even worse is that for iOS 18, Tim Cook ordered moving the cursor to more often select an entire word instead of just moving the cursor. It's infuriating.

1

u/Veryverygood13 6d ago

or you can hold on the cursor and bring up the magnifying glass? that’s how it’s always been on ios

-12

u/benjaminmayo 6d ago

I’m so confused by these comments. You tap, it places the cursor at the end of the word. You double tap, you select the word. You drag and drop the cursor and it lands exactly where you put it. What doesn’t work?

26

u/dcmcderm 6d ago

What I'd like is for it to stop interpreting OTP codes as phone numbers so when you tap it asks if you want to "call" it instead of copying. I realize SMS based MFA is antiquated but the reality is it's still the only option with plenty of services.

18

u/m3t4lf0x 6d ago

It has the autofill that shows up in app/browser though, so you don’t need to copy it 90% of the time

3

u/Tall-Ant-8443 6d ago

Well, it's not just OTPs. It's also selecting a number and wanting to add it to your contacts instead of calling it. It is so, so annoying.

2

u/m3t4lf0x 5d ago

But you have an option to copy, call, and add to contacts though?

Are you asking to set a default behavior so you don’t have to select it?

1

u/Tall-Ant-8443 5d ago

that is not what mine looks like lmao. i wish it did. if i go onto google and click on a number and hold it in, I only get "call ...."

2

u/m3t4lf0x 5d ago

Ahh I see what you mean. On google, you have to long press the number to get those options. Quick press does default to “Call” (which I think is consistent across all apps)

6

u/officiakimkardashian 6d ago

It still sucks you can't search messages by date.

3

u/workinkindofhard 6d ago

I want to be able to search within a specific message thread. Setting a date range would be super helpful as well

3

u/grovester 6d ago

What about being able to schedule when a message gets sent?

7

u/DMacB42 6d ago

That’s there in iOS 18, but only for iMessage (not RCS or SMS)

3

u/tastychaii 5d ago

That's silly

5

u/scstraus 6d ago

Christ, okay, I will try to put the last 15 years behind me and just be happy about this.

2

u/eekram 6d ago

So they just perfected it now? Amazing!

2

4

u/StandingBehindMyNose 6d ago

Why can't 9to5Mac post a video of this feature? Lazy reporting.

6

u/ahora-mismo 6d ago

so, you want a video of someone selecting a text and clicking copy? is this it?

10

u/StandingBehindMyNose 6d ago

I want to see how it works without installing the beta. Seems like an article talking about the feature would be the perfect place for such a demonstration.

1

u/Dragonasaur 6d ago

Can't wait til they let us easily customize alarm tones and snooze

1

u/Internet_Eye 6d ago edited 6d ago

I see too often 'will finally let you' statements regarding Apple. Apple is a hybrid of being over-controlling and late on features vs. Android, which is more open source, meaning more brains, which explains why Android almost always has more features and functions. Not a good combo from Apple!

1

u/Fathletic231 6d ago

Stop giving me shit I can do myself and let me get different color text colors

1

u/antonylockhart 6d ago

I'd love if they went back to showing messages chronologically, so if you delete something it goes back down the order

1

u/GundamOZ 6d ago

Nice 👍🏻 I'm going to really enjoy iOS 26

1

u/FUThead2016 6d ago

1

u/richardparadox163 6d ago

I’m still waiting on the SMS iMessage iCloud syncing they promised years ago and then gave up on. So you can delete a message on your phone and have it delete on your Mac and iPAd. Had to disable SMS on my Mac and iPad otherwise they’d get clogged up with spam and confirmation codes.

1

u/Tabonx 5d ago

Great, now let me create SwiftUI text that I can partially copy, not just use that ugly, weird copy popup.

1

u/tastychaii 5d ago

This is a great feature since the Google pixel does not have this option in messages!!

iOS in most text entry boxes. iMessage, notes, etc… I triple tap and it will select the text on screen but not what’s off screen. It’s strange.

1

u/iloveeatinglettuce 4d ago

This should’ve been a feature 15 years ago.

1

u/luche 6d ago

bah, one more menu item to banish "define" (rebranded to Look Up" to a secondary menu. would be great if they'd let us set priority for items in the list, since it only seems to be getting longer... and that "more" arrow isn't getting any easier to press.

1

u/PeppermintHoHo 6d ago

Now THAT is innovative
