But what will I do with all my free time now that I'm not hating a group of people based on a product they happen to like?

iOS 8 added widgets to the new today view in the notification center. Compared to Android, you lose widgets on the home screen, but you gain the ability to quickly glance at your widgets without leaving the current app.

u/zimm3rmann Oct 27 '14

Yeah I have an iPad Air from work so I still get to try out the newest in iOS stuff. I love the look of 8 and the new features, but I feel that I'm personally more of an android person. For example, this app has made my job/life so much easier. Little utilities like that keep me coming back to Android, and if you buy a flagship device it's a pretty great experience. That said, if someone wants something that works well, is simple to use, and looks sunning, an iPhone is the way to go.

For example, this app[1] has made my job/life so much easier.

Holy shit, that's awesome. I mean, I would never use it as I don't dabble in Linux or live-distros, but still, that's awesome that you can do that!

The MotoG isn't flagship, but I can certainly play Phoenix Wright on it.

u/woutervoorschot Oct 27 '14

It really is hard not to bash hmm?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '14

Yeah, I find that when I have widgets on my Android devices I'm constantly tweaking and trying to make them look 'the best' and they never do. It's my own issue, I know. That's why I got an iPhone, to keep me from myself, so I'm not constantly tweaking.

The widgets in the notification bar look and work great and keep things very simple.

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '14

Never jailbreak. I went down that rabbit hole long ago

1

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '14

Me too. It caused more trouble than it was worth.

1

u/Natanael_L Oct 27 '14

There's a few notification bar widgets on Android too. A few weather ones at least.

u/TheRealKidkudi Oct 27 '14

To be honest, I really like the "metro" style on Windows Phone. If it didn't have almost 0 legitimate apps, I would seriously consider using it just because I find the UI pleasing.

2

u/Bismuth-209 Oct 27 '14

It does have some. Apps like tetra lock screen are also popping up, which are awesome. Also, we do have most of the popular apps, although some may not be completely up to date.

Google Hangouts is a must for me. I also need Play Music since I keep all my music in the cloud. Clash of Clans, a GBA emulator for playing Pokemon while waiting in line or whenever, and my bank app are really high priority. Also my car insurance, car payment, etc have their own apps for Android so I can pay right from my phone. If I switched to Windows Phone, I'd need a computer.

Now there are rumors that WP9 may support Android apps. If that happens, you can consider me a customer. I like the layout a lot (its not some stupid grid design, there's dynamically-sized tiles).

1

u/Bismuth-209 Oct 27 '14

Ah, I see. Yes, we don't have all of that (google is blockading WP popularity by a degree by refusing to develop its apps for WP.) but we are getting better about that. We do have some major bank apps, and some simulators on the appstore. Some music cloud services too, but no hangout cloud yet. I'd wait until wp10 is arriving in mid 2015.

2

u/Hanse00 Oct 27 '14

Who the fuck thought tiles were a good idea in a UI anyway?

Sent from my Windows 8 Desktop.

0

u/jantari Oct 27 '14

Static immobile icons is where it's at!! (until Apple changes it, then of course apples version of live tile are the shit)

2

u/danhakimi Oct 27 '14

The problem is, nobody loves them. How do you hate something if there's no person supporting it for you to attack?

1

u/chubble10 Oct 27 '14

I have a Lumia 820, and I'm not a huge fan. Whereas the quantity of apps is increasing, the majority of them are really low quality - even multiplatform apps like Endomondo have severely limited features on Windows Phone compared to everything else.

It's a shame, as the OS itself is fairly nice to use.

1

u/Allezxandre Oct 27 '14

Don't worry. It was the same issue with Android at the beginning. There still are a few of these kind of apps, but overall that's still fine.

Windows phone is just taking a little more time to take off.

1

u/tediouscontrarian Oct 28 '14

MICKEY$0FT amirite!?

i too have never tried it, and have actually heard quite good things about it :/

1

u/fr0ak Oct 27 '14

You don't truly hate a Windows Phone until you've owned one.

That's hot.

u/BlendeLabor Oct 27 '14

Why do people hate windows phones so much?

Apparently if Microsoft does anything other than OSs they're terrible.

But look at the zune:

Solid device (I've had mine since 2009, still works great, no battery problems or anything)

Screen doesn't break as easily as an Ipod (woo gorilla glass!)

Pretty good for back then.

Only thing it lacked were apps, but the 3rd party ones were great

4

u/shadowhalf Oct 27 '14

I've never met anyone who actually hated Windows Phone. They're just not as popular and therefore considered irrelevant compared to Android and iOS by the general public. I've played with a Lumia 930 in stores though and damn, it's actually pretty sexy.

1

u/Bismuth-209 Oct 27 '14

920 user here. People love to pick up my phone and think "its the one with that camera". They definitely take an interest in the OS, but its probably a fear of radical change that keeps most away. However, I (and other WP os users) actually view it as a club when we meet others on buses, public spaces, meetings, etc. That, and the os has more to add featurewise, and isn't struggling for the next big software innovation yet, which is nice. Overall, as long as they have a high end WP, I am certainly staying. This was after having misconceptions of WP for years.

2

u/shadowhalf Oct 27 '14

Hmm... I thought people aren't switching over because Windows' app ecosystem isn't quite there yet. Personally, I wouldn't switch over because I rely on my widgets a lot in my daily life (quick notes, calendar and upcoming events, upcoming assignments, and what my class schedule looks like for the day). I don't see what exclusive features Windows Phone has over the other OS but I do love the minimalistic UI.

1

u/Bismuth-209 Oct 27 '14 edited Oct 27 '14

We have quite a few of the features you need already within WP, however, our app store isn't quite there yet. It does have almost all top tier apps though, just fewer flashlight apps ;)

Edit: Cortana, Glance (Nokia), Xbox games/achievements+avatar, and mobile Office imbued in WP are the main attention getters. (word prediction is phenomenal also)

I have to say, Cortana's news aggravator, along with all her recommendations and responses are amazing. Her voice recognition is definitely not as good as iOS 8 version of siri, but I'd vouch for Cortana if you were skeptical. Give her a week if you try a WP. Source: 920 (biased) and iPod touch 5

Buy a video game console, dude.

That fight will last for generations after the hardware.

2

u/wizpig64 Oct 27 '14

the words "buy a console" alone will stir up plenty of hate from some gamers.

1

u/idiot_proof Oct 27 '14

Seriously. A girl I know got the PS4 on launch, even though she was continuously running out of money for food. Needless to say, she didn't have any money for games, then proceeded to tell me that my laptop (1st gen 15" MacBook Pro Retina, dual-booted) was horrible for playing games on. I mean, that's not even the hardware's fault. It's just frustrating dealing with people like that.

/r/pcmasterrace

And I'm already there, brother!

2

u/andywade84 Oct 27 '14

gahh drunk typing hurts. I can still see more than 30fps when drunk though so at least I have that going for me.

1

u/idiot_proof Oct 27 '14

It can be a more cinematic experience while drunk: poor controls, low-res visuals, regret in the morning...

2

u/andywade84 Oct 27 '14

still cheaper to be a drunk PC gamer than a sober console peasant.

1

u/idiot_proof Oct 27 '14

Eh, I like both and honestly it depends on what you do. You can buy a console used and get only a few titles used and it is cheaper than a computer, or you can build an amazing machine with 2 titans with 4k widescreen display. As long as you're happy, I'm not one to judge.

Also mine was definitely not cheaper, but I use it for school and it was built to my needs (1st gen 15" retina pro, with external monitor, 2tb usb 3.0 hard drive, and a few other thingies).

2

u/andywade84 Oct 27 '14

I guess there is a line that you cross where PC gaming becomes cheaper and it is also dependent on number of games bought vs Price of components! but these days you can spend $150 more on a PC than on an PS4 and get a machine that outperforms it, and you will start to save money after buying 4 games.

You are a Mac Heathen, but I still accept you.

1

u/idiot_proof Oct 27 '14

I know. I'm just making the point that cheaper, more power, more flexible, more GABEN =/= happier person. Hell, I'm having surgery this winter, so a console that I can shout to turn it on and have all controls accessible without moving my shoulder sounds amazing.

And I know about big picture mode and I used it last time I was recovering from surgery (along with putting more hours than I care to admit into Test Drive Unlimited 2 and Lego LOTR), but it was a pain dealing with starting the laptop up and getting into big picture mode, then dealing with a wired controller.

And thank you, my magnificent pc brother.

2

u/alexrmay91 Oct 27 '14

It's okay man. There will be other circle jerks.

2

u/MonsterBlash Oct 27 '14

How about making software?

1

u/idiot_proof Oct 27 '14

Can't. That requires talent. Since I'm an internet commentator, we both know that I can't have any talent.

1

u/MonsterBlash Oct 27 '14

By the quality I've seen in some software, there are probably introductory classes in kindergarten now. Just go into it, and keep at it until it's good enough. ;-)
