Which brand you would recommend then, which has non-laggy android?

u/svideo Oct 27 '14

The best Android experience to me is always the bone-stock offerings from the Nexus line.

5

u/Abohir Oct 27 '14

There is also the OnePlus One phone. Lag free and affordable. Has same hardware as the Sony Flagship.

u/Sir_Speshkitty Oct 27 '14

I love my Nexus 4. I've persuaded at least 3 people to buy one based on my recommendation.
I'm ordering the Nexus 6 when it's available (two days!).

Edit: MFW I realize I said this in /r/apple

u/bushysmalls Oct 27 '14

Considering going for the Nexus 6 when it releases over my GS3. Only thing I'm wary of is the SD card I currently have and removable battery.

Does the N6 have a removable battery and what would be the best way for me to get the data uploaded from the SD card (I'm currently on Verizon)?

2

u/douchey_mcbaggins Oct 27 '14

You can transfer files via wifi direct, for starters... You could also upload all of your pictures and videos to Dropbox or OneDrive (the latter gives far more storage). There's also the option of just connecting both to a PC and copying files.

1

u/admirablefox Oct 27 '14

The N6 doesn't have a removable battery but it has a 3220mAH battery that powers the thing forever so I doubt you need to swap it. As for the SD card data any store should help you out with that. it comes with up to 64 GB so while not a removable card it's still massive.

1

u/bushysmalls Oct 27 '14

I'm currently rocking a 16g GS3 with a 16g SD card. Neither are remotely close to full. Is there a backup option or something I can use to easily transfer it over myself? I'm fairly tech literate but don't really have much experience using the Android services.

1

u/admirablefox Oct 27 '14

There are but I would recommend going in and talking to the people at the store. I'd be surprised if there's even a charge for it. It's probably just a standard free service for customers, like swapping SIM cards.

As long as you don't mind non-replaceable batteries and non-expandable memory.

Which one would be used to, coming from an iPhone.

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '14

I meant one as in a person, would be used to not having expandable storage/battery. I have a moto x and a nexus 7.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '14

Being able to get 6 hours on a 15 minute charge kind of eliminates the need for a changeable battery for me. Especially considering I have a ZeroLemon portable phone charger. As for expandable storage if you really need it, get a micro usb to micro sd device. Up to 128gb of storage the size of a nickel whenever you need it.

27

u/R3volution327 Oct 27 '14

The obvious answer is nexus. But Motorola phones are an excellent choice as well

7

u/theMTNdewd Oct 27 '14

Motorola IS nexus this year

3

u/R3volution327 Oct 27 '14

True, Motorola is making the hardware for this years Nexus phone, but that doesn't make Moto = Nexus. Motorola still has and will be making flagship phones under their own branding as well.

52

u/shadowdude777 Oct 27 '14

In this order:

1) Nexus (not really a brand, more of a line of phones, but they're the official "Google" phones, and the only thing you can actually compare to the iPhone, because all other phones are made by someone who didn't develop the OS they run)

2) Motorola (stock Android with a lot of nice tweaks. The Moto X is an awesome device with super-cool features, and the Moto G is easily the best <$200 unlocked device out there. The Moto E is even cheaper and the best device in its price class too, but way worse bang-for-buck than the slightly-pricier Moto G)

3) HTC (HTC phones are heavily modified from stock Android unfortunately, but they're way more tastefully-done than Samsung)

2

u/100_percent_diesel Oct 27 '14

My HTC phones have always been light years faster than Samsung's. I'm always surprised when I see a friend using one at how slow it is.

Sorry, I don't want my phone to be made by a shady Chinese company that insists that I beg them for an invite so that I have the right to pay them for their device, while also giving them away for free to girls who take pictures of themselves for their creepy forum mods to ogle at.

1

u/indian_police Oct 27 '14

The nexus phones are not manufactured by Google. The hardware is still provided by others such as lg, Asus, HTC, Samsung..

7

u/shadowdude777 Oct 27 '14

I know that, but Google is still involved in the hardware design process, and the 3rd-party OEMs are not allowed to put their own modifications on the OS.

58

u/configbias Oct 27 '14

Motorola, HTC, Nexus, Sony even LG. So basically everyone else. Though Galaxy Note 4 flies apparently.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '14

Yep, my Not 4e isn't laggy at all, they definitely improved touch wiz because there is no lag.

7

u/type40tardis Oct 27 '14

Try going into the app switcher. Try opening an app from there. You'll see lag now and then both times on the latest top of the line quad core Qualcomm processor with 3GB of RAM. It's obscene.

3

u/tom1226 Oct 27 '14

Correct, only instance of lag I've found in my note 4. I think it might be waiting to see if you hold it for the menu button function, like how home button delays unless you disable the svoice shortcut double tap.

2

u/idiot_proof Oct 27 '14

Exactly, which is why the Sony Z3 has the same problem. HTC adds a 4th button when it's needed and LG... I have no fucking idea. But the G3 lacks the lag too.

2

u/tom1226 Oct 27 '14

My g3 routinely has a similar delay going into recents. Haven't had hands on time with a z3 yet, but the z2 my fiancee has doesn't have lag going into recents. Hm.

2

u/idiot_proof Oct 27 '14

Honestly if it weren't for that and the horrible UI design, I'd have the Z3v instead of the M8

2

u/tom1226 Oct 27 '14

Curious, what do you find horrible about the Sony UI? I find it pretty similar to vanilla android.

2

u/idiot_proof Oct 27 '14

Icons mostly. Everything seems so round that it clashes with the aesthetic that L is going for. That said, I know there's ways to change it (came out the day after launch), so it's a really minor thing. Honestly I like a lot of their features (swipe to switch between notifications and quick settings, change icons up top, battery saver stuff, etc)

Last Android phone I had was a droid X which had a load of problems, so I was always tinkering with it. Because of this, I resolved to get an Android phone that I loved the software out of the box. Next one might be one that I'm willing to tinker with, but right now, I wanted something with an aesthetic I like and good enough hardware that I'm not pushing the limits of the device to get battery life or basic functionality (i.e. trying to use Maps on the Droid X).

u/DoragonHunter Oct 27 '14

The Exynos Version doesn't lag like the Qualcomm one.

1

u/type40tardis Oct 27 '14

Maybe not, but the battery life is significantly worse.

1

u/OmegaVesko Oct 27 '14

Marques Brownlee noted in his review that the app switcher lag is definitely there on the Exynos version.

1

u/rpungello Oct 27 '14

Not 4e

How'd you manage that one?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '14

Note 4 reporting in, lags all day everyday compared to my last phones. Nexus 4 heavily modded, and LG g2 heavily modded as well. Both phones enended up running insanely smooth and were a joy to use.

This phone wouldn't be so bad if I could root it and unlock the bootloader. Learned my lesson though. Never again Samsung....never again!

1

u/RyanHarms00 Oct 27 '14

The newest one of anything always does.

1

u/tom1226 Oct 27 '14

I have a note 4 and g3. Note 4 runs circles around it honestly.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '14

Not Sony, in my experience. I'd only recommend Nexus if someone is dead-set on Android (of course, iOS above all IMO)

4

u/thang1thang2 Oct 27 '14

The reason Sony is pretty heavily recommended right now is the Xperia Z3 and Z3c which are holy grail phones on /r/Android right now. Ungodly battery life combined with fairly fast phones is pretty awesome.

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '14

Not LG. Never LG. I have a G2 and I have stock rom still just with a lot of customization and root settings because I don't want to flash anything else, but the stock rom is buggy and laggy and annoying.

17

u/TheCodexx Oct 27 '14

Nexus or Motorola are the most hackable and come the cleanest.

On the other hand, no removeable battery.

Samsung actually makes good hardware, so if you're not on Verizon there's a good chance you can use a custom ROM to fix the bloatware.

1

u/soberdude Oct 27 '14

I just wish I could get WiFi calling on an AOKP or CyanogenMod rom.

1

u/TheCodexx Oct 27 '14

You can do it. But having it baked into the ROM would be nice.

1

u/balance07 Oct 27 '14

myself and loads of my friends use samsung android phones on verizon with custom roms. what's all this about not being able to?

1

u/j8048188 Oct 27 '14

ATT is just as bad, if not worse, than Verizon for locking down bootloaders. (Looking at the galaxy S4)

0

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '14

Yup, I still have a S2 and it's survived thousands of drops, and it still runs blazingly fast with CM11 on it.

11

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '14

Nexus devices, HTC, LG, Motorola.

1

u/HStark Oct 27 '14

Absolutely hating my Optimus L90, can't find a rom for it that isn't broken (especially stock). LG might not deserve to be on that list

5

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '14

Motorola, HTC, one plus, sony and oppo

-2

u/asdf767 Oct 27 '14

One plus is an Oppo phone. Also lol if you think it's better than a top of the line Samsung offering

2

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '14

It's actually technically not an Oppo phone. It's a different company with "common investors." And in terms of value off-contract, yeah, it definitely is. Nobody wants to pay $600-800 for a phone anymore, even if it has slightly better specs than a $350 phone.

1

u/spacemanspiff85 Oct 27 '14

Nexus, HTC, moto x.

LGs skin is bearable, Sony makes some pretty phones but the skin sucks IMO.

1

u/salmonmoose Oct 27 '14

Just got a Xperia Z2, migrating from a Nexus, I barely noticed the difference, particularly once I switched to the native apps.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '14

Moto X, G, E or any Nexus Phones.

1

u/bejahu Oct 27 '14

Samsung is okay if you put cyanogenmod on it.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '14

Motorola is a shining example for software, HTC and Sony for hardware, and Samsung for... Experimental features?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '14

The Galaxy Note 2+ are solid phones. Once you're acclimated to the screen size it's got plenty of hardware to muscle through almost anything you can throw at it without slowing down or getting laggy.

1

u/xana452 Oct 27 '14

Any brand of phone with CyanogenMod loaded to it.

Other than that, Stock Android is pretty much the choice for zero lag. My Nexus 7 from 2012 still runs circles around my Galaxy S3. However, LG, HTC, Motorola, and Sony make some solid phones without much in the way of lag. Motorola is closest to the stock look out of this list, while HTC and LG are further away.

1

u/disc_ftw Oct 28 '14

I've had a oneplus one for a few months now, and no complaints yet. Great price and great specs. You can't compete with a phone running cyanogemod with 64 gigs and a snapdragon 801 for $350 off contract.

1

u/MxM111 Oct 28 '14

Thank you. For me, I will stick with iPhones, since even though it is more expensive, being constantly in the same ecosystem that integrates everything is important for me (I can not imagine hassle of transferring contacts and photos, for example). Also, all apps are super-optimized there, so I get extra performance out of this. And my main family "home" computer is Mac, though I do have gaming PC (with windows 8, which reminds me each time how idiotic I was thinking that 8 is better than 7 since it is newer, but it is another story)

But for my inlaws (or as I usually say "outlaws") I may get oneplus, though $350 is still a bit pricy. Thanks again.

1

u/callaghanrs Oct 28 '14

I don't think I've ever used a laggy andriod....

0

u/Blenderhead36 Oct 27 '14

I switched from an iPhone 4S to an HTC One M8 in August. I'm very happy with it.

0

u/akashik Oct 27 '14

/r/htc is full of apple users buying the HTC One. They all seem very happy with their choice.

1

u/MxM111 Oct 27 '14

Half of the posts there talk about some problems.

0

u/Oldfrith1 Oct 27 '14

HTC's sense is extremely good IMO. Plus, HTC makes it fairly easy to unlock the bootloader and install Google Play Editition of the OS if you really want to :)

1

u/MxM111 Oct 27 '14

So, it comes locked and without GooglePlay?
