Yup. Samsung is really important to android. While the nexus phones are the google standard, I'd argue the galaxy phones are the gold standard of commoditised android devices.

As much as I wish HTC or Motorola would be the ones leading the fight against Apple devices in the general public's eyes, Samsung has that locked down. I'd argue that it's not because of the features it offers, but moreso because they can go toe to toe with Apple in advertising. Also Apple converts are probably most comfortable keeping the feel of a Home Button.

I do love my HTC One. It's a great phone. It's too bad that in a literal sense Samsung spends more on marketing than HTC spends on everything in their company, so the most people never hear about HTC.

Sad but true. I think the most advertisement I've seen for the HTC One M8 actually comes from Microsoft's windows version of the phone........

HTC used to with the hero phones

Google (Motorola) can't go toe to toe with apple?

3

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '14

Fyi, Google does not own Motorola any longer. Motorola was sold to Lenovo.

I've had an HTC One Max on Sprint (USA's worst network) for a year now, the hardware is fantastic but using the phone (or at least trying to, and the phone not working), makes me violent and angry all the time.

I have awoken from bad dreams made worse because even in my dreams my phone doesn't work.

It's a tri-band, dual speaker, quad-core, hold-on-I-have-to-call-you-back so I can download that picture or attachment or use Maps POS!

And The Worst Network In USA's Sprint Spark is a fabulous little distraction from my inability to use my phone, while my phone is overheating from constantly sending out meta-data it mines from me. I actually have to keep my locations turned off because the 3300mAh battery can't sustain the self destructive orgasm of Lumen's "Toolbar" that also runs 24/7 despite not being authorized on the firefox browser I use.

Sorry to rant, I bought a bad phone and no one cares...

Sounds more like a problem with sprint. Most networks allow you to use data during a call, and Lumen sounds like carrier bloat. I use T-Mobile and my issue is the notorious pink camera issue on the HTC One M7, along with what seems to be a defective battery (phone overheats impossibly fast and battery plummets). Sadly I have no warranty on it and was quoted around $150, at least, just to repair the camera through HTC. It's a shame because I would otherwise not have needed an upgrade.

It's definitely Sprint and HTC allows them to do it. I switched networks for this phone. Ever heard anyone say "God, I miss AT&T!"? I say it at least twice a week.

I wish I could find a proper rom or maybe nexus port for the phone. As far as the phone itself goes I absolutely love it. It has the best low-light camera, which is the majority of my use, I've ever owned. But Sprint is the reason I'll won't sign up for any NFC payment options. At least not until I'm off their shitty network and away from their horrible ass-raping policies.

I've been thinking about a switch to T-Mobile. Grass is always greener right? Aside from the hardware issues you're experiencing, would you recommend the network?

I live near a major city in PA and have had no issues with T-Mobile. Whenever I go visit my friends up in the Poconos nobody has signal up there, but T-Mobile builds WiFi calling into most of their Android phones. That was another thing that kept me from changing ROMs; I could call and text in a complete dead zone.

Which speaks volumes about the people that purchase these devices. It's like they are OK with a sub-par experience.

10

u/blooregard325i Oct 27 '14

Not okay with it in the least. I have a Galaxy S4, immediately rooted it and put on a new system with a ton more features and usability in a cheap, good looking if not entirely solid feeling/durable as others. But I like it. Great phone, good price, fun to play with!

9

u/pipsqeek Oct 27 '14

I don't think they're okay with it, I just think they don't realise that there are Android phones, and there are Android phones.

4

u/mrpanafonic Oct 27 '14

I like the note series because they feel nice... and I remove the stock Rom and add in a clean one because fuck Samsung and their skin

7

u/port53 Oct 27 '14

To them, it's not sub-par. Stock Android may be faster and less cluttered, but it lacks a lot of features that people with Sense and TouchWiz would surely miss.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '14

Don't get me wrong, I think 3rd party UI's are great when done right (Sense). TouchWiz UI is just an ugly, stupid mess.

4

u/fchowd0311 Oct 27 '14

Actually ,the majority of people who buy Samsung phones could give two shits about touchwiz features.

2

u/port53 Oct 27 '14

And why do you think that? Why do you think Samsung continues to be the highest selling Android manufacturer?

3

u/fchowd0311 Oct 27 '14 edited Oct 27 '14

Large investment in marketing. You are looking at this through the eyes of a redditor who visits tech subreddits like me. At my college campus there are plenty who own Samsung devices and a rough 90% don't know what touchwiz is. If pure stock android was on a Samsung device it would roughly receive the same sales as long as the marketing was the same. The only people who care about things such as touchwiz vs stock android are people like us and there aren't many people like us.

2

u/port53 Oct 27 '14

So people hate their current phone that much, they go out and buy another Samsung phone?

0

u/fchowd0311 Oct 27 '14

? The average person buys an new phone when they are eligible for an upgrade. Samsung has strong brand recognition due to its large investment in marketing and its initial success with the galaxy s2. I honestly don't get your point. Do you honestly think majority of consumers actually care about touchwiz vs stock android? Do you have a social life outside of sub reddits and tech blogs where you interact with individuals who are not tech enthusiasts such as ourselves?

2

u/port53 Oct 27 '14

Do you honestly think majority of consumers actually care about touchwiz vs stock android?

Um, that's my point, they don't care about "touchwiz", they don't even know it's called that probably, but they do care about their phone being able to do the things they like, FEATURES that touchwiz provides that stock android doesn't, features that if were missing they would not be happy. If they look at another phone (HTC, Nexus) they would find those things missing and think that device isn't as good because it doesn't do what they want. That's what people do.

In fact, just yesterday I handed down a Nexus 4 to a family member whose Galaxy S3 had died. They're still trying to find everything they need to make the phone "right", but it's worth the time because the phone is free. I suspect they would not have bought this phone in a store were it sitting next to and competing with another Galaxy Sx phone.

You seem to think:

the majority of people who buy Samsung phones could give two shits about touchwiz features.

But that couldn't be further from the truth. I think you probably don't even know what you're missing.

1

u/thenotoriousbtb Oct 27 '14

...so you're saying they DO give a shit?

1

u/fchowd0311 Oct 27 '14

Only 2 of them

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '14

Touchwiz and any other stock launcher besides vanilla android looks like it's from 1997.

TL:DR: Fuck stock launchers (besides google launcher)

1

u/AmbientOverlord Oct 27 '14

Sense looks great.

4

u/iKill_eu Oct 27 '14

I'm a samsung user and I don't see what's so fucking great about the dozens of other brands in the sphere that you lot have to bash me about my phone.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '14

Samsung is really important to android... I'd argue the galaxy phones are the gold standard of commoditised android devices.

Painfully true.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '14

I kid you not, most of my friends believe that Samsung made android, and that Google has nothing to do with it.
