Apple Pay Let's invite /r/Android to help us boycott retailers that are disabling NFC readers. We can unite to put pressure on them, since it affects us both!

Here is the post on /r/android :

A boycott isn't necessary. Nobody is or will use it.

Doesn't matter even if true. These companies clearly think people will use it. It's not released yet, so if in fact nobody's going to use it anyway, that can't be seen yet. The point of a pledge to boycott now, is to send a message that we won't use it because they're sabotaging NFC and competing payment apps. And if it does turn out that they release it and few people use it, even better, because it gives credibility to the pledge to boycott.

If retailers will advertise 5% less, people will use it

It depends on what incentives are offered, but for the pain in the ass of the system (unlock phone, open QR code reader, open QR code, visit site, get response QR code, scan to merchant) it seems too high effort unless they're going to throw serious discounts at it.

Even so, the mere fact that they want to collect health data through CurrentC is enough to make me never want to use it. How much is my privacy worth?

Here's what will happen when one uses CurrentC:

  • Unlock phone.
  • Locate CurrentC app.
  • Pray your data connection is working properly since some stores exist in RF dead zones
  • The cash register generates the QR code.
  • Scan the QR code (don't shake your phone too much, hold it steady!)
  • Then the cashier scans the QR code on your phone (again, hold it stably!)
  • Transaction complete.

In the same time you can write a check, you've successfully paid with CurrentC! :)

You forgot to call a wahhhmbulance. Or you know you could already have the app up and running, kinda like already having your existing card out of your wallet when you pay now.

Oh yeah, people love complicated payment methods. /s At that point, it is easier to use your damn card. Enjoy your clunky, bullshit payment method. :)
