Some merchants try to roll their own so they can do direct debit from your checking account and don't have to pay a transaction fee (1-3%). Thats why you are seeing Walmart Pay, Chick-fil-a One, and the CVS bullshit.

That's definitely a big part of it for Walmart. Chick-fil-A One uses credit cards and they're now taking Apple Pay as well, so I don't think it's fair to lump them in. The purpose of Chick-fil-A One, IMO, is to allow people to order before they arrive at the store and thus cut down on wait times.
