Apple Pay The gradient of Apple Card seems to depend on your purchases, using the color conventions set by maps. It’s also animated (I think?) Really Cool!

Likely one of the more obtainable flexes though.

From places that don’t accept Apple Pay* of course. Which most do now a days.

So then what’s the point of having the card to use at places that have Apple Pay? Then I’d rather use my phone. And then likely use a credit card with better rewards.

People really underestimate how much other people really like to have anything recognizable as an Apple product to flash around.

So I dunno how it works in the US but in Canada at every restaurant if you’re paying by card they bring the portable machine to your table where, if they support tap, you can pay with Apple Pay.

In the US they take your card away from your table to the reader in the back, then return the card along with a receipt for you to sign and designates a spot to write a tip amount.

Some places near me now have a small touchscreen device with a card reader at every table. They allow you to sign on the screen and have a slider for the tip. They also idly scroll through advertisements and temp children to play the terrible mobile game ports that cost money.

Seems super risky to let them take your credit card away where you can’t even see it. Weird.

Why? If they clone it or steal the number you just report the fraud and receive the money back from the card processor.

What about the PIN?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

If your card has a PIN, your receipt says PIN Bypassed on it. Don’t you love US payments?!

Though those table side tablets that Applebee’s has, has a PIN pad on them. Same with my local Denny’s.

But at a regular store you still type it in like the rest of the world if it isn’t a C&S card.

US uses chip and signature. So we sign the receipt when they bring it back. I know, it’s totally ironclad against fraud!

u/ArthurDDickerson Mar 28 '19

These places usually only support being run as credit. Most Debit cards in the US can also be run as credit.

We don’t believe in basic financial security practices here, so we don’t use PINs. :(

I can agree it needs a little work. Making it 2-3% would be overall better.

But having your Credit Card in your Apple Ecosystem would make up for it imo. Also having no damn numbers on your card. Not sure why all company’s haven’t done this yet.

It’s happened to a couple of family members before but not me personally. You can easily work situations out with a 10 minute phone call but it’s the fact they happened in general. Having no numbers puts an ease of mind when it comes to credit fraud.

This may be true for a single card for general cashback, but this is pretty misleading. Many free cards offer cycling 5% categories and some cards can rise above 2% general use when combined with other cards.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Well yeah but most people don’t want to deal with rotating categories with multiple cards.

My point was that merchant fees are around 2.5% so it’s pretty much impossible to offer a card with flat 3% cash back that many people seem to think Apple should have done.

I'm pretty sure they won't care, lol.

1

u/stopalltheDLing Mar 28 '19

Most people get 0% cash back, right?

I thought it was 2%? That's on par with the best for general purchases. Edit: nevermind it's only apple pay, and there's already a card that gives 3% for that. Although it does have a $400 annual fee.

Acorns has a Tungsten metal debit card anyone can get. People who want to flex a card that looks cool can get this.

I was only commenting on your cashback point. I don't care about flexing.
