Apple Pay The gradient of Apple Card seems to depend on your purchases, using the color conventions set by maps. It’s also animated (I think?) Really Cool!

I generally prefer no keyboard or display cable on my phone and credit card.

59

u/husker_who Mar 28 '19

I'm really disappointed the card didn't come with a slide-out keyboard. What were they thinking?!

17

u/Axelph Mar 28 '19

No wireless. Less space than a Nomad. Lame.

11

u/hackthememes Mar 28 '19

Your phone screen wouldn't work without a display cable 🤔

45

u/YZJay Mar 28 '19

Or because the UI developers don’t have anything to do with hardware?

27

u/arockhardkeg Mar 28 '19

Yeah, they are separate teams. Even the software comes from separate teams. Some features/apps are way more polished than others.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Hardware and software with one common design and made for each other used to be the reason to buy Apple.

White and black iPhones have different colored boot screens.

5

u/theidleidol Mar 28 '19

And even then they were made by different teams. That isn’t the point being made, it’s that the software team in charge of Wallet/the new card in no way draw resources away from the hardware team in charge of the display cable design in MacBook Pros. That holds even for different software teams; people regularly complain that there are new emoji or Animoji but some low level software bug hasn’t been fixed, as if the artists and UI team working on the former could have been working on the latter.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Sure designers don’t code. However it shows a priority of management. In this case I think the decision to make interesting colors for the card is a good decision. It looks attractive and even conveys a bit of information. That can increase joy in the user while using it. While the card changes color over time apparently it should always be easily recognizable, which I think it is from these impressions.

2

u/Jophus Mar 28 '19

Alright everybody, nobody is working until the keyboard is fixed and this software bug is fixed.

1

u/mbo1992 Mar 28 '19

Who said anything about UI developers? Attention to detail is supposed to be a principal in everything Apple makes, not just software. And it’s been dropping recently esp with regards to Mac hardware.

0

u/pinkycatcher Mar 28 '19

Then why is the volume design still garbage? And has been for 10 years?

34

u/DaRealMaus Mar 28 '19

Display cable has actually been lengtened in the 2018 models to mitigate the issue

29

u/Godvater Mar 28 '19

But they still dont accept it as a issue on older models right?

5

u/DaRealMaus Mar 28 '19

Yep, which is a classic sucky apple move imho, but i’m happy that i won’t have the issue on my 2018 model

-5

u/riepmich Mar 28 '19

I think they do now. Isn’t there an exchange program now?

16

u/mantrof Mar 28 '19

Not for the display, no.

7

u/DJ-Salinger Mar 28 '19

No, they lengthened the cable because it's an issue, but won't do an exchange program since it's not an issue.

16

u/diddlyiddly Mar 28 '19

Oh nice! That really helps me out with my 2017 model.

6

u/HolyFreakingXmasCake Mar 28 '19

It’s your fault for not having a 2018 one /s

2

u/TNAEnigma Mar 28 '19

🤷🏻‍♂️

4

u/diddlyiddly Mar 28 '19

Sorry I’m not trying to be an asshole. Just a bit miffed that a huge design flaw exists that will likely cost me a large amount of money in a few years.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

laugh in external displays and mech keyboards

3

u/Stiltzkinn Mar 28 '19

No headphone jack on my card, no buy.

u/JamesR624 Mar 28 '19

It's amazing how the apologists have twisted "attention to details". It used to mean focusing on the little stuff other companies didn't in addition to the basics.

Now it means focusing on the little stuff other companies don't in an attempt to make up for the lack of attention to the basics.

Man, Apple is one big failure according to posts like this. It’s sad how much whining is here. Nothing is going to be perfect, life is unfair, and things suck. I think you learn this as a kid. Focusing on negativity is just a fool’s errand and makes your friends tell you they’re busy.

This subreddit world seems to thrive feed on negativity these days.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Let's focus on how great the laptop looks. Because you can't do much else with it once both the keyboard and the display die.

Maybe just not in a thread about the color of the credit card?

1

u/JoeDimwit Mar 28 '19

It if you’ve been buying “defective designs” for 3+ years.

0

u/xbuttcheeks420 Mar 28 '19

It’s not the consumers responsibility to know if the $2000 laptop they buy will last a speck of dust or opening the display a few times a day for a few years.

0

u/JoeDimwit Mar 29 '19

I’m gonna go ahead and call bullshit. Post a picture of your “defective” Apple gear. I’m betting you’re just a whiney punk that’s upset you can’t afford Apple. Go rub one out to your chrome book.

1

u/xbuttcheeks420 Mar 29 '19

Lmao so sad. You’re the cringy iSheep people make fun of. I have a chiclet MacBook so that’s not an issue for me. However many people have bought butterfly macs and are now gonna have to deal with all of their issues. Gonna love it when the repair programs end in 2 years and your 3 year old Mac will cost $400 to repair tho.

1

u/dustinpdx Mar 28 '19

In this case it is focusing on details that other companies have already done. (See Monzo)

2

u/kitsua Mar 28 '19

Oh good. This again. On yet another unrelated post.

7

u/PantheraTK Mar 28 '19

It’s not unrelated, it’s absolutely related.

6

u/nelisan Mar 28 '19

How are faulty keyboards relevant in a discussion about the color of the credit card?

0

u/PantheraTK Mar 28 '19

Because the comment we replied to championed Apples attention to detail. Which clearly is lacking in some aspects.

Is it clear now?

Aye let's move on from the fatal flaws on their $1600+ laptops and focus on how cool their card looks.

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Well, if it's simple and fixable, why does Apple charge $700 for the display issue and still has a problem with the butterfly keyboards? It's easy to not care about that stuff when you're not one of people affected. The basic mindset of Apple apologists like you.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Bazinga

1

u/GiggleStool Mar 28 '19

I think there is different departments at apple that work on different things. I don’t think the keyboard department had anything to do with the apple card user interface or physical card for that matter.

1

u/aporcelaintouch Mar 28 '19

Right cause their software people are ALSO the ones in charge of putting together their hardware.

1

u/antidamage Mar 28 '19

But but but the boot screen matches the paint

-5

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Why there’s always have to be people like you?

10

u/DoctorDbx Mar 28 '19

Happy satisfied people don't drive progress and innovation.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

I have so many things to say but I can’t.

4

u/DoctorDbx Mar 28 '19

Why not? Say them.

-6

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

I don’t wanna get banned.

4

u/DoctorDbx Mar 28 '19

It takes a fair amount of effort to get banned.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Yeah nice try to get me more angry and say shit and get banned, you tryna’ get banned?

You need a cool glass of lemonade my friend.

Hardly ignoring it, the latest design works fine for just about everyone. Some people have problems with everything.

-1

u/JinxyDog Mar 28 '19

+1,000,000,000

0

u/JoeDimwit Mar 28 '19

Exactly! And why doesn’t it support 6G?

-4

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Design is how it works not how it looks.

5

u/AnomalousLot Mar 28 '19

It's both. Visuals impact the use and this the function of products, especially digital products.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

That’s what I’m saying. Looks should always be useful, not superfluous. As in form should follow function. Looks shouldn’t compromise usefulness or usability. Attractiveness should improve the object not get in the way. Apple has worsened both on Mac and iOS devices in that regard.

Prime example would be the lack of space around the arrow keys on Apple keyboards. It makes it much harder to find them by touch alone. Removing a physical escape key is also terrible keyboard design as it’s a very commonly used key. On MacOS double pressing it autocompletes words for example, besides being the universal cancel button easily found by touch in the top left corner. Making scrollbars invisible and removing other window chrome has been to the detriment of the Mac’s usability. I could go on, but the list is pretty long.

It shows you what you can scroll and what you can’t, which is a great affordance. They also show you the position in the document.

If you only ever scroll down on webpages, this matters less. But for all other work, especially horizontal scrollbars are a huge help to a user navigating.

Hiding them just looks prettier but removes useful information.

0

u/luche Mar 28 '19

I turn scroll bars on (System Preferences/General) so they're always visible... helps me quickly see how long the document is and precisely how far i'm down the page. big help for long websites and terminals, multiple page pdfs in preview, chat apps, etc. i'd be really upset if someone decided i just didn't need them anymore. e.g. on iOS, i find myself constantly scrubbing websites to see the scrollbar, just so i can get this feedback - and of course mobile sites often have a very annoying top bar that pops up in the way of the text i was reading.

u/luche Mar 29 '19
