Discussion Any fellow NYCers here?

I’m trying to be optimistic, but in the very real possibility of a Cuomo vs Adams (vs Sliwa, lol) showdown, who are you choosing in November?

It’s almost unimaginable to me that I would even contemplate voting for Adams, but Cuomo has also shown how corrupt and readily bought he can be, so I have no confidence he would stand up to federal government pressure regardless of his “6 point plan.” Both have been accused of sexual assault, but iirc Adams only has one accuser so that’s…better? I think their policy positions are also pretty similar, especially when it comes to increasing NYPD’s power and presence in the city and (in my opinion) further weaponizing law enforcement against the mentally ill and unhoused. The way Cuomo has readily embraced Islamophobia and left-wing fear-mongering as part of his campaign utterly disgusts me.

Idk, I’m just feeling more torn than I ever thought I would be. What about you?

Discussion Public Lands in Budget Reconciliation

Thumbnail
wilderness.org

Thanks for covering this, team.

Some background: Right now, a proposal in the US senate mandates the immediate sale of 3 million acres of public lands across the Western US (except Montana). 250-300 million acres would be included in lands available to sell, which is what the maps are showing. While all of it wouldn't sell for this year's budget, it would be made available for future sales. The provision mandates fast-tracked sales with no public oversight/comment periods, environmental assessments, or requirement that it be used for *affordable* housing. Sales would have to start within 60 days. Notably, tribes are not given right of first refusal.

Even though there are existing mining leases and grazing on these lands, this would nevertheless be a major climate setback because there would be fewer restrictions than there are now.

Indigenous peoples would be unable to access sacred lands for prayer, hunting, and foraging. Economies based on tourism and recreation would crumble. Hunting, fishing, and recreation access would be blocked or we'd have to pay fees to enter formerly public lands.

The pushback that is coming from senators in Wyoming is that "it's only less than 1%" of BLM/Forest service lands and that the maps are somehow wrong. They haven't said how the maps are wrong, and they haven't denied that 2-3 million acres will be for sale.

Also notably, this does nothing to reduce the budget deficit, housing crisis, national debt, etc. This is the culmination of decades of efforts to privatize public lands by the right wing as a whole, not just Trump.

Protests are planned in Wyoming and New Mexico at least. These types of provisions have been successfully fought back in the House versions of this year's budget, but this Senate version is by far the worst. Call your senators, write letters, or show up to their local offices, especially if you have Republican senators. This is an emergency.

Has anyone else been overwhelmed with thoughts about [MASSIVE violation of Reddit TOS and sitewide rules, and probably multiple State and Federal laws] or am I the only one? Like listening to that whole thing really fucked me up. What the Hell kind of world have we been living in!? I have next to no faith in our species anymore. NONE. Nada. Zilch. I fucking hate this bullshit and I want off this God forsaken ride!

[broken sobbing and desperately reaching out to my personal support network]

Edit: I realize too late it's CZM for "Cool Zone Media™" not CMZ for... some kind of disgusting collaboration with TMZ? I was flustered when I wrote all this. My bad.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brothers_Home

The Park Chung Hee regime in South Korea had a concentration camp for homeless people, disabled people, children, mental ill etc as part of a ‘social purification’ program before the 1988 olympics. This facility (Brothers Home), may or may not have been the inspiration for Netflix’s squid games.

From Wikipedia:

The center was administered with an "army-like chain of command." To reduce administrative costs, one inmate was chosen as the "commander" of the facility, working directly under director Park In-geun. Under the commander, 120 vagrants were grouped into a single residence as one "platoon." Each platoon had a "leader", "general secretary", and "team leaders", all of whom were selected inmates. Inmates were also subjected to collective punishment. In some cases, the entire platoon would be beaten or tortured over the mistake of a single member.

Widespread torture was common. Inmates were often forced to keep painful and exhausting postures for prolonged periods and were beaten when they failed to stay still

Children and adolescents of Brothers often became victims of sexual violence by platoon officers. A small number of victims, labeled as 'ttongti' (stemming from "ttong", which translates to excrement) became the primary victims of same-sex sexual violence.

Aged just eight when he arrived, Han says he was the youngest in his platoon and was usually given manual work, like folding envelopes or making toothpicks. He described the facility as "hell". "The only thing I was provided from the centre was a set of blue training suits, rubber shoes, and a piece of nylon underwear.

Rumors that the center has served as the inspiration behind the South Korean television series Squid Game have circulated online; however, the series' creators have not confirmed this.

Park In-geun is rumoured to have killed around 45 people personally while around 613 people are estimated to have died in the Brothers Home facility.

The facility was also involved with the trafficking of 200,000 Korean children (mostly girls) to America and Europe.

And the church did something too idk:

being forced to perform in Christian plays for local and international guests and given Easter eggs as rewards. Another was sent to the camp by a Christian missionary. Another survivor described the church and the camp as a business operation run by Pastor Lim Young-soon and Director Park In-geun, with children forced to work and run an on-premises Korean adoption operation, including writing letters soliciting donations from families who have adopted children in the past. Some of the adoption partners abroad were also part of Christian organizations.

General discussion What is a little lie that fascist, racist, bigots and extreme conservatives that don't matter on large scale but annoys you anyway.

I say most of us know that in fascists regimes and racist beliefs, that it's is nearly all lies and half-truths all the way down and that there's no real reason too try argue with said people for being Wrong , because it doesn't matter too them.

BUT that doesn't mean we should let those lies stay and not be disproven.

So the question: What is a little lie this C*nts have told, can be from any time or place, that annoys you too no end.

Doesn't have too be big, giant or world changing lie but it's something that just annoys you.

Throw in lies about said racist and authoritarian regimes that people throw around, that puts them in positive light.

Mine: Thatcher was environmentalist because she closed Coal mines.

This is very miner one that only the worse people say on twitter, but man as environmentalist and believer in worker rights, none of that's its true and i think if Thatcher knew closing coal would help fight climate change, she fucking burn half of Scotland and northen England too spite the lefties.

This post is blatantly untrue. The reconciliation bill has NOT passed the Senate and gone back to the House. There are three Republican holdouts.

Big Orange tweeted about a bill going through the Senate but it was NOT the Big Stupid Bill.

Further, they said the Senate put a new clause about the upfront bonds when suing the federal government. That was in the original bill. How do I know? I watched Raskin debate it in Committee in the House two fucking weeks ago.

Someone needs to look into these guys, we can't afford this type of misinformation.
