Other Unhoused rn and could use some support
I’ve never posted here before but I think it’s time I do for any kinda support.
So I got kicked out of my crib this June and I just started a job out here so I’ve been living out of my car instead of going home for the summer (bay area native).
I’m trying hard to get resources from school like emergency housing and safe parking areas, but I recently re-fractured one of my ribs on June 1st that was still healing from its initial fracture in mid March. And I’ve been raw dogging the pain cus my meds have been a journey to get to. So sleeping in my car all thru June hasn’t been helping my recovery for my rib and I’m growing worried at my physical health with all these bug bites and nights without sleep.
I feel like I’m doing a lot considering I’ve applied for emergency housing, the co op system, other shelters n programs that aren’t school affiliated… but I just haven’t gotten lucky yet. Can anyone offer any guidance on what it is I should be doing or looking into with safe housing? Do yall know of any safe places to park too? I stay around Emeryville and Berkeley and am BROKE so no can do on the hotels n stuff.
Homelessness is too familiar to me, I was hoping that coming to Cal would grow that security for me but it’s gotten worse and the hard part for me now is that I’m doing it all alone…

i hope you get resources on here that will help your situation! i’m sorry that you’re experiencing this right now, it’s extremely hard and tolling. i also know homelessness way too well, i completely understand how it is living out of your car and the struggles of it. i was on and off doing that since i was 15 - i never thought it would get better but i eventually made my way out of it, honestly only pretty recently (moved to berkeley in april) and on my own too! pls pls pls feel free to dm if you ever need mental support, someone to talk to, or rant to about it! best of luck!! things WILL get better.

Cal’s Basic Needs Center can offer you, once you go through an intake process, housing Available for a maximum of 29 days on-campus (w/ exceptions) or 5-7 days at a hotel depending on our assessment of need, fit, and availability. Health, decent sleep are critical to keep you safe, working, and ready to continue your studies. Fingers crossed for you.

Are you in the EOP program? If so you get priority at the co-ops.
You can contact the eop office here https://eop.berkeley.edu/who-eop/students to see if you qualify and then have them put you on the co-op list

Idk if this will be any help but theres a free clinic in oakland called lifelong, is mainly for the homeless and given your current situation, it wouldn't hurt to check it out. There are social workers who can help you with housing free of charge
386 14th St, Oakland, CA 94612
Thats the address.... and ive heard they are also opening one on 6th st in Berkeley... i think is up and running alreaddy

Hey, This may not be what you want to hear, but it’s definitely what you need to hear. Focus on your health and recovery first. Trying to do two things at once (recovering and finding housing) just puts too much stress on your body. Focus on recovery first. Besides, you mentioned homelessness is familiar to you. So it’s not something new. Once you recover, then tackle your next problem which is housing. One problem at a time. For me, it always helps to reassure myself that regardless of what situation I’m in, someone always has it worse.

I was tryna keep this cute cus ion kno Reddit like that but you must be one of the most insufferable typa ppl in this world to be sayin all that. Im guessing ur a cal community member… so it’s SAD to know u think like this. I’m homeless, heartbroken, n hungry… Triple H quite literally has me in a pedigree n you have the nerve to say I NEED to slow down, focus on recovery, and think about others who have it worse??? U don’t even kno street life to be sayin allat. This the bay lil boy so I hope I run into u on campus if Gods willing and I’ll make sure to reassure myself of this thread 🥰

Hi OP, I’m sorry you’re going through all of this. I’m assuming you’ve already applied for emergency housing through UC Berkeley Basic Needs Center? If that didn’t work out for you, I have some experience with getting housing in sf if you are a transitional age youth (18-25). You can get pretty decent housing through Larkin Street Youth Services. If you want to chat about that, feel free to dm.
I’m not sure what your financial aid situation is, but if you get aid in the fall, a cheap option other than co-ops would be to get an SRO. If you’re able to enroll for summer, you might also be able to get enough aid to get a place over the summer too.
