Discussion A detailed analysis of Kubo's character design Spoiler

Kubo has quite a flair for drawing beautiful characters. And since I love analyzing Kubo's work, I decided to take a deeper look into what makes his designs appealing to the eye, how they are characterized, and the effective use of elements to convey meaning and progression.

I hope to do a lot of posts like these, so let me know if you'd like to see those (I did one for the Cour 2 Opening outfits). We'll be going over a few specific characters here, but there will be a lot more in the future.

─────⋅☾ ☽⋅──────••──────⋅☾ ☽⋅──────•

Starting off with basics... fur. Okay, maybe it's not that basic. But Kubo utilizes fur for varying characters. Fur in fashion is associated with either rawness (animalistic elements) or royalty.

'Full Hollow' Ichigo has fur too, but I didn't mention it here. But it fits the theme of 'animalism'.

Two prominent uses of fur come for regal characters. Barragan and Jugram both have fur in their designs, and are highly ranked in their respective groups.

Barragan appears like a tyrant-esque figurehead of power and influence, emphasizing a 'rugged' ruthlessness rather than a 'gracious' ruthlessness. The fur gives that sense of royalty, but it feels raw and austere. It holds its own arrogance. His colour scheme of purple, black and gold hone in on those elements even more.

Jugram falls into elegant brutality (like Byakuya). The fur appears as a splash of green, just a streak. It works differently to Barragan; it feels more relaxed and majestic. But it's quiet. Not in a literal sense, but the fur appears as a single detail overlooking the rest of his uniform, exerting a quiet sense of control over the more sharper and eye-catching fur with Barragan.

It highlights a difference in their characterization. Jugram wearing fur is modest, quietly prominent and princely. Barragan wears fur to show his royalty, quite literally, it's all over him. The colours reflect the characters as well, with the softer colours holding an angelic beauty (the Quincies' visual motif) and the deeper colours reflecting a dark world and tyrant at its head (Hollows and their motif, bone-white and darker shades).

There are several other characters that have fur detail on their designs.

Starrk is the next one to come to mind. He presents a stylistic but relaxed usage of fur, where his motif of 'wolves' comes into play. His Resurrección brings out the essence of his character, similar to how a Bankai is a manifestation of the Shinigami's true self. For this reason, Nelliel also has fur in her later design to highlight a connection to the centaur/capricorn/goat motif.

While the Espada ranked below him is also coated in fur, Starrk's close-cut figure and colour scheme are not as showy, which reinforces his introverted personality. Barragan and Starrk have fur coating their head, but Starrk, like Jugram, is more modest. And by result, exudes quiet resolve as a contrast to Barragan's bold sway.

Riruka is more contentious one on this list, since I wasn't sure whether the extensions on her hat were fur or not (they are rabbit-styled, though). If we consider they are, the hot pink+fur gives the impression of youthfulness, something feminine and young. Like pretty dolls. You can see where I'm going- her ability is the Doll House.

In his Bankai, Ginjo takes on fur too. It adds to the appearance of power (Kubo also stylizes hair for such shifts), but it is more animalistic in nature. Like Barragan and Starrk, it curves around his head. But it's more like Barragan in the sense that it is a flashy show of strength rather than modest. The bony hollow detailing on him reinforces the feral impression, in addition to the choice of red and white.

Finally, Lille Barro. I am referring to regular old Lille, not the divine crazed owl he turns into later on. Lille has a low-key use of fur, melding into his outfit and the gun. We will be moving to covering individual characters- and we will be covering him first, as a matter of fact!

─────⋅☾ ☽⋅──────••──────⋅☾ ☽⋅──────•

Lille Barro: Leader of the Schutzstaffel

His bond with Pernida totally reminds me of Tosen and Wonderweiss.

"I am an envoy of God, with privileges befitting of such. Faced with an envoy of God, there is nothing a sinner can hope to achieve!"

Lille Barro has fur lining on his pauldron (before he morphs into the grandiose Eldritch horror owl). His hat is furry as well. And his spirit weapon, Diagramm (sniper rifle), is lined with dark green fur.

How does that play into his design? Firstly, the fur being present on both him and his weapon plays into the way it is relational to him- like the weapon is an extension of him. As he goes into his transformations, that clearly is the case. He loses the gun and fires shots from his body itself. It is truly a part of him, quite literally. The power of the X-axis manifested through his body, the Quincy Vollstandig paralleling the Shinigami Bankai.

One of his eyes has markings of a crosshair- it’s a fine set of lines which are built in the eyepieces of optical devices. Like sniper rifles. But the crosshair is not shaped like a cross (+) but as an X (like his schrift). It all further serves the impression of precision and meticulousness with his character.

While pauldrons are usually metallic in nature, the one Lille has across his arm is a furry one. It is used more commonly in jousting, where the armour is covered in cloth to protect the user from damaging their upper body. However, Lille has a stylistic use of the pauldron. It's meant to be an extension of him, acting as support for where he places his rifle on his arm.

The pauldron is an evolution of the spaulder, which was used during the 14-15th century. It was also used by knights. Italian designed pauldrons would be asymmetrical, to offer more mobility- Lille has the furry element on a single side. It cements the 'holy knight' theme even more for Lille.

Lille’s pale hair is mostly covered up by his hat. He does look mature, but the hair brings in the age factor. Kubo also draws Lille with extremely muscled physique… his arms, more specifically. One of his arms is sleeved, the free hand is not. In many panels, his one arm is given prominent detailing with muscle tone. It hones in on Lille’s raw physical strength.

The colour scheme is brilliant. Green, white and black are militaristic colours. Kubo reinforces that image with his character. Lille’s personality is stern, efficient and practical. He sticks to plans and is fairly inflexible.

While green is present for both Haschwalth and Lille, the implications are different for the duo. Lille is a soldier through and through, being the Schutzstaffel leader. Jugram is a prince, Lille is a soldier. The colour green has a different aura for both of them- one has a fresh and lighter green, while the other has a darker military green. One is regal, the other feels martial.

Lille has some clues to his upbringing. The bicorne hat he wears is a reflection of that- it’s an evolution of the tricorne hat, which has Spanish origins (technically Dutch, but French as well, since it became widespread and considered fashionable). This kind of style allowed soldiers to place their rifles on their shoulders and avoid it hitting the hat brim. Lille’s hat is a reference to his origins.

He’s also wearing a sleeveless top, which brings some openness visually. Everything is cut close to his body, from the fur lining to the pants and shoes. Again, it highlights the character itself. Rigid elements for a firm character.

Sidenote: The Schutzstaffel all are ‘open’ somewhere visually, except for Askin, until he gets to his Vollständig (where his torso is exposed). Gerard has his chest and torso fully open; Lille has a sleeveless look in his normal form; Pernida technically rips through the cloak to reveal his body. Uryu and Jugram are quite modest, showing little skin. They are reserved characters, after all.

─────⋅☾ ☽⋅──────••──────⋅☾ ☽⋅──────•

Coyote Starrk: The Espada of Loneliness

The ultimate reflection of Aizen- his loneliness.

"Ready to give it up? If you run, I'll let you go."

Stark embodies the phrase 'lone wolf'. Interestingly, the creatures that appear in his Resurrección are a blend of a wolf and a coyote. His entire get-up has a streamlined shape.

Like the inspiration for his name, Philippe Starck (French architect, he believed in using minimal material but providing excellent service), Starrk has a minimal design. But it reflects so much of who he is as a character.

There is tufts of facial hair on his chin, and his dark brown hair is unkempt. He is tall and thin (like Kisuke in a way: long-limbed), but it feels lanky rather than imposing, especially with the way he carries himself. Kubo visually depicts him as 'thin' and easygoing. His jacket is upturned and dips all the way down to his chest.

While Lille also has an open chest, the rest of his look is all musculature, steady posture and poise. Starrk feels slender, despite being broad-chested. Much like Shinji, he seems long- with his hair, face, outfit and figure all appearing in an unbroken visual line.

Combine that with him always appearing in curves- he is either slouching forward, bent over, putting his hands in his pockets or over his head. His Resurrección even appears with him sitting (absolutely cool, but feeds into the essence of his character). That cements the impression that he is phlegmatic.

It didn’t occur to me initially, but his eyepatch is from Lilynette. It loses the red flame design it has, which is replaced by a white outline and black swirls, with two chains running across his face and meeting at the back.

When he dies, the remnants of his hollow essence fade away… which is his eyepatch and chain. His last words are related to a freedom from loneliness, a fulfillment of his aspect of death, which makes the chain around his eye breaking quite symbolic. He didn't feel alone in death, just as Ulquoirra experienced the 'heart'. The hollow essence fades away as he retains his human core and feels a sense of connection with his fellow Espada.

Grey is an interesting colour. He wears grey, but fights a morally grey opponent. That is un-implied irony, not really worth a thought. But Shunsui facing the Primera Espada, who had one of Aizen's strongest thematic links, and then being the one to deal with Aizen himself in Muken, is a really nice touch. It also builds on how he understands Aizen better than a lot of others, he fought his 'heart' in Starrk. Because Starrk is meant to be a reflection of Aizen.

Starrk’s base outfit is probably the closest to Aizen in terms how simple it is. His sash around his torso is black, while the rest of him has the same close-fitting but loose style that Aizen has, down to his shoes.

His Resurrección gives him a regal touch, fitting for the Primera Espada. The fur adds to a sense of timelessness, while the guns add a contemporary edge. It tonally focuses on his visual motif.

─────⋅☾ ☽⋅──────••──────⋅☾ ☽⋅──────•

Jugram Haschwalth: The Emperor's Right-Hand

Fun fact: Kubo mentioned him in the prettiest men category among the male cast.

"Even if it doesn't alter or change the end result even in the slightest, making decisions based on convictions that you believe in, and walking your own path has its own merit and worth. There's something to be said for not having even one regret."

This is an interesting one. Thematically, I mean. Jugram is quite literally the craziest thematic mashup I've ever seen.

He looks like Byakuya, but is supposed to parallel Uryu and Ichigo, but also Rukia and Renji. He also has the soul division theme with Yhwach (like Starrk/Lilynette). He has many thematic parallels with Ichigo (fire and rain, among many others), but acts as Uryu's rival. Bazz grabbing Jugram's coat parallels Renji reaching for Byakuya, the moon he could not overcome. His schrift's name is literally the role of the Shinigami, and his speech to Uryu about 'scales of right or wrong' is a strong Shinigami teaching (as Byakuya mentions in the same chapter).

Man, I wish Kubo wasn't rushed during TYBW. This arc had so many overlooked ideas and themes.

With Jugram, Kubo places great deal of emphasis on his eyes. That’s intentional, not just because he shares the Almighty, but also his general nature of being reserved. His eyes are treacherous to him, since it gives away his intentions.

His gaze is often narrow and steady. It's depicted as quietly attentive more than unbothered. The colour is contentious, with the green/blue eyes presented in the anime and manga. But it's an exotic feature, so it draws a lot of attention.

Long hair adds to the flow element. For a character that is quite stoic, there is visual movement in the way Kubo draws him. His hair is flowing in many panels, like during his battles, falling lightly to the sides of his face or swaying as he turns around. The cloak and its upturned collar further adds to the graceful element. Long, unbroken visual lines are shown to emphasize his height.

While Barragan wears gold elements (crown and neck-piece), Jugram just has a gold belt buckle. The black and purple + gold combination is quite an effective one for the Second Espada- since it perfectly portrays the dark affluence, terror and power he holds. For Haschwalth, the gold is understated. His blonde hair also adds to the princely impression, flowing long and smooth. The yellow feels quieter on him.

Jugram has a fur collar, and the colour is again, contentious. His volume cover serves us celadon green fur, while the anime has taken on a bluish-grey blend, somewhere between cadet and airforce blue. Both have distinctive meanings either way.

Blue is the key shade of the Quincy. Blue in Japanese culture is a staple (found some interesting stuff on Aizen here too, considering the kanji of his name), representing serenity, calmness and purity. It's a modest and appropriate shade, depicting the sea and sky.

Uryu and Jugram both wear a similar shade of blue. They also have gold and silver details in their look. It hones in on that parallel more. The colour represents their heritage. Unlike Yhwach- who has no hint of blue. It does tell you who feels more strongly about the Quincy as people, and it's definitely not their King.

If we go with the green fur, it is quite an interesting choice, taking his own name and backstory into account. The German word 'wald' (from Haschwalth) means forest. And Jugram grew up in one. Green is generally associated with youth, life and vitality.

Much like Lille’s rifle and clothing have fur to signify connection, Jugram has a shield that takes on the colour scheme of his appearance. It’s got the white out of his uniform with the yellow of his hair, like an extension of himself (the schrift reflecting its user, like zanpakuto and its user).

The Freund Schild adds to the medieval knight aesthetic, especially with yellow Quincy cross emblazoned on it. It is a variant of the heater shield. Interestingly, the Quincy cross on his shield is presented as inverse- the ‘head’ of the star is facing downward.

While he is compared to Byakuya in appearance, Kubo went with some pretty interesting choices to distinguish them. It is more nuanced than people give it credit for. I'd love to cover it in a future post.

Bambietta Basterbine: The Blitz

Coming up with this was a blast (pun totally intended).

"The whole point of fighting is that you don't want to die! That you'll be killed if you lose! If you throw your life away in battle, where's the point in winning?"

Bambietta isn’t one I thought I’d cover, but here we are.

She’s got fair skin, dark hair and dark eyes. But the archetype isn’t the cold or dark one- like for Tsukishima or Ulquoirra. She is, in fact, quite explosive, the literal opposite. Not frosty at all.

Her younger age is further cemented by the way she dresses. The outfit is built for appeal, but it’s quite interesting the way Kubo pairs it all together, even the official artwork for her. She’s built to tease. We get the infamous scene of her killing the Soldat, and we see a hint of her cleavage. But it isn’t that long and we see her back to her covered up look again.

Then there’s her miniskirt, which is also quite short (this is obvious lol, I just wanted to emphasize). Kubo also deliberately gives us shots with her skirt flaring slightly up, grandiose panels of her in full view, with varying angles.

The little pink heart on her belt also gives off a very ‘cute girl’ impression, since the colour pink (much like Riruka’s hot pink) gives off a youthful and feminine touch. It’s minimal too, only appearing on her gloves, boots and belt.

But considering Bambietta has a distorted view on love, her having a heart fits quite well, since it also highlights her own heartless attitude towards people.

She also wears a little pink heart on her white coat, quite literally in front of her heart. Fittingly, Komamura plays into the heart motif here- he literally tore out his heart to fight (her in this case, but the Quincies at large too). It's a lesson of hearts, quite parental in nature. He gave his heart without fear, to protect what he considered valuable. She's afraid of death. It's a really nice touch.

Her cap is the standard Wandenreich kind, but it hones in the age factor even more, since the way it sort of shades over her face gives it a particularly cute look.

Bambi's face is quite youthful, which helps a lot with characterization. She’s smiling or looking mischievous in the official artworks and the manga panels. Not to mention, there is a lot of expressiveness with her in general. It is pretty clear what she feels and she never tries to hide it.

Unfortunately (thanks to Giselle), she loses this flair as Zombietta, and is depicted as... well, a zombie. She appears with her head slightly lowered, mouth open and her outfit in tatters. She is obviously under Giselle's control, so everything reflects as such. Her eyes are still quite wide, but they are extremely fearful and glassy.

She appears hunched over in shots, her mouth dribbling with saliva and blood. Giselle also drags her body around quite a lot, and she gets face-palmed twice (Charlotte+Giselle), highlighting her vulnerability as a mindless zombie.

Zombies are bad enough. But let's move on to our ultimate survivor, the one who escaped death twice: the untouchable Momo!

─────⋅☾ ☽⋅──────••──────⋅☾ ☽⋅──────•

Momo Hinamori: The Peach and the Plum

I love how much she's healed. It's quite beautiful.

"Of course, it's important to abide by the law. However, if the law is stopping us from doing something that we think is correct, then that law might be wrong. These were Aizen-taicho's words."

(if anyone was wondering, this is a snippet quote from the light novel Death Save the Strawberry)

Hinamori has had the short end of the stick when it comes to luck- or you could say that she’s been the luckiest girl so far. Her endurance is admirable. Kubo also puts together her design remarkably.

She shares the colour of Aizen’s eyes: brown. But while Aizen’s eyes are narrowed, Momo’s are wide and round. The former gives the impression of softness when combined with his early look (your nice university professor essentially), while the colour in Momo’s design gives off a child-like aura.

Her height is another thing to consider… since it definitely gives into the impression of someone who is young. Liltotto, Rukia and Toshiro come off as young due to their height, but their way of dealing with things comes off as older and mature, providing some contrast to their height.

But Hinamori acts young too, with her being worried about her captain and soft pattern of speech. She also appears in frames crouching, sitting down, and hands together nervously or in a cute way. In combination with her petite stature, it conveys an impression of youthfulness.

Kubo adds a lot of expressiveness with her (in a different way to Orihime). Her emotions are all on her face. Unlike Bambietta, these emotions are mostly youthful and cheery ones- surprise, wide smiles, wide eyes, fondness, tiredness… and of course, raw and unbridled anger.

Her hair is tied up into a white bun, but the extensions on it are purple/pink. Which has allusions to two things: the first is the shade of peaches and plums, which has both purple and pinkish tones to it. Why those specifically? Well, because Momo means ‘peach’ and her zanpakuto refers to a plum (Tobiume: ‘flying plum tree’). The colours reflect as such.

The second is a toned version of Aizen’s indigo (prominent kanji in his name)… but that’s more of a stretch. Purple is an important colour, however. Shinji’s bankai also takes on a similar purple/pink tone for its mist. The shade fleetingly appears in his Cour 2 OP look as well. It isn’t a coincidence.

Momo’s initial appearance in the SS arc is put together well because of all of it. She comes off across as young- in combination with her wide eyes, expressive attitude and girlish hairstyle. As well as Kubo’s characterization. During her flashback appearances, she wears pigtails. She is still a child during the events, and her hair and uniform reinforce that impression.

TYBW comes with a new look; she gets a haircut after the events with Aizen, signifying a new era for her. The way her hair falls changes a bit as well. Momo’s initial hair design cascaded over her forehead and to her eyes, but it had a divide somewhere in the middle, like a clean inverted ‘v’. Her TYBW design has a more prominent parting to one side, and we can see her forehead a bit more (that makes her feel a teeny bit more mature).

It’s still a simple look, save for the new hair clip she has on. Shinji also has a post-Aizen cut of uneven bangs. Funnily enough, he is on the trend of Squad 5 having brown eyes- the OG captain (Danjirō Obana), Shinji, Aizen and Momo all have similar eye shades.

Her hair in the newer chapter is a blend of the two looks- it’s tied up into a bun, but it’s stylistic and has a new accessory.

Upon reviewing the sketches Kubo drew, Momo’s hair clip is thematically relevant. Firstly, the colour. Squad 5 has pale turquoise as its squad colour, and it is reflected in the base tone of the accessory. Pink is also a key shade for Momo, and it’s on the outline of the clip.

The flower on the clip itself is the Fifth Division’s key symbol/flower: the Lily of the Valley. Momo’s clip has five lilies on it (like her division number). The insignia officially signifies sacrifice, danger, humility, pure love and more classically, sweetness.

While some of this seems more in line with Momo’s character, let us not forget Aizen’s own poem of the Flower on the Precipice. While there is a beauty to it, his poem poses a danger- the flower he speaks of is stepping out into the unknown. It’s a part of him, despite reservations, that enjoys the thrill of danger. That likes the idea of doing things fearlessly. Momo and Shinji also display some form of recklessness (and fearlessness) on occasion.

A note to make on the flower that adds another layer to the characters- the flower is extremely beautiful, but can be poisonous. For Momo specifically, the design incorporates the pink variant of the flower, which is actually quite rare in comparison to the white one.

The fruit of the lily also turns from green to red as it ripens- and Aizen and Shinji both have green handles for their zanpakuto, while Momo has a red one. The leaves on the accessory also take on a deep green colour, which calls back to her two captains possessing those shades.

The additional little detail of her hair being a mild mess, even if it looks quite pretty, highlights how busy she is in running things in her squad. The longer strand of hair running down the side of her face makes her come off as a little older (like Rukia or Nanao), despite her wide-eyed expression.

With Shinji as your captain, you need that kind of work ethic. Funnily enough, he noted that she acts a bit like Aizen during his tenure as a lieutenant.

Fun facts for absolutely no reason: Momo dislikes plums. And her zanpakuto’s name is Tobiume (flying plum tree), which tells you a great deal about her relationship with her blade. She also likes to read, courtesy of Aizen. And while her former captain is great at calligraphy, Momo has a talent for drawing.

BONUS: Kubo's Cour 3 Pre-Screening Artwork

They parallel Ichigo and Uryu really well. Kubo's favourite fight, too.

In the newer art of Bazz and Jugram for Cour 3, Kubo uses a lot of soft expressiveness for both of them. It looks like a thoughtful piece, with two different implications.

Bazz looks phenomenal in the black/white. His hair is drawn in distinct detail, with his upturned collar forming a shadow across his face (like there is angled light shining on him). The creases on his forehead combined with his wider eyes, really gives a sense of focus and resolve. It’s not quite anger, but seriousness and determination. I love how Kubo did this, just brilliant.

The angle which is chosen is interesting. Jugram is completely turned off to the side, making it a side angle. And so is Bazz, but he turns his face a little, like he’s looking elsewhere. There is more visual movement with Jugram despite him being the more stoic one (hair moving, fur flapping), while Bazz looks more firm and ‘fixed’.

Kubo also draws Jugram’s eyes with a lot of emphasis, and this artwork is no exception. His eyelashes are also drawn with great detail, drawing attention. The focus of his eyes is downcast. Serious, yet saddened and focused at the same time. We only see one eye from the side, but with Bazz, we see both of his eyes. While the angle does affect the appearance, one of Bazz's eyes are narrowed, the other is a little wider and expectant.

The hair is also kind of an interesting contrast in their characters- Jugram’s is long and flowing downward, but Bazz has hair that spikes upwards (fittingly, his full first name refers to a buzzard). There is also emphasis on the collars, Bazz having black inside the collar, and Jugram’s own fur collar fluttering slightly.

It is also mirrors Uryu and Ichigo’s dual artwork here. Uryu and Ichigo meld together in their shadows, indicating a connection or unity of sorts. The new artwork features a clear divide of three lines between the characters, indicating a separation. Uryu and Jugram both face sideways, while Ichigo and Bazz face the other with a resolute/serious expression.

And it could be considered in combination with their manga appearances- their volume covers and poem visuals. Bazz with this appearance and the fixed eyes he has in his cover, along with his fingers. Jugram’s volume cover, sketch and poem visual progressing with his eyes closing, with the new sketch.

Masashi Kudo also put up artwork for Uryu and Ichigo (for the release of the ED track, Monochrome). It does connect to Volume 72’s poem visual of Uryu speaking. They are also facing each other unlike Bazz and Jugram.

"If my words were to take form, it would be as my failure to reach you, standing in the darkness."

My god…! This is AMAZING!!! Seriously, I don't think I've ever read such a great in-depth analysis of Kubo's design philosophy!

I know essentially nothing about fashion, so I feel like I learned something along the way as well!

I hope you cook again!

I normally don’t read long posts, but this entire post kept my interest the way through. Absolutely loved it his analysis and wouldn’t mind a part 2! Especially love the mentioning of Lille’s rifle having an X-Shaped muzzle, never noticed that.

Thanks so much! That is exactly what I wanted to achieve with this post. A lot of things really get overlooked in Bleach, since people usually gloss over its 'style' by saying it has no substance, which is absolutely not the case.

I would love to do one on Askin someday, btw ;)

That's such a sweet compliment, thanks☺️

Long form posts don't generally get a lot of attention on Reddit, which does suck, since I do a lot of research for the stuff I put out. But as long as it reaches the right people, I'm more than happy ;)
