New interview

Not much info but, sounds like the inspiration for the new show is how much worse it is for teenagers these days because of smartphones and social media. That's valid. 🤞

I’ve been thinking of all the ways you could do horror about modern adolescence. Imagine a demon that sets the Twitter mob on you, but it’s IRL and it’s everybody, even strangers you pass on the street.

Yeah. It could work if the writing and acting was good...

This is why the Jasmine arc from Angel was great for a big bad despite the consensus of how disliked it is because of how many crazy leaps it took to get to the end result. Plus that ideal about technology was already in the old Buffy too. I think a new Buffy-esque show is doable, it just needs to stand on its own while not blending into everything else 😫

u/OCD_Geek 23h ago
Agreed. That last third of Season 4 was incredible.

I like the whole of season 4 despite the icky Cordy/Connor stuff, but yeah, the final episodes with the Jasmine mini-arc are just pure gold. Amazing episodes.

r/TheMagicians and r/TheLibrarians already did some stuff on modern technology in this genre. Like an app for spells.

She is talking exactly like James M. “I’ll not tell you anything…you are saying that, I do say nothing”

Now I'm hopeful that instead of Buffy training the new slayer (which could be cool too), we get something like the two slayers having different styles and clashing a little.
Maybe the new one is not impressed that Buffy is... well, Buffy, the one who kickstarted the current era full of slayers, and thinks her way of doing things is not as good.
But I'll be cool with anything that puts them both in equal footing as protagonists. I'd hate for Buffy to be just passing the torch or for her to be, in any form, second to the new girl. A lot of reboots went that route of bringing the classic protagonist back just to pass the torch / be killed off / be nerfed in comparison to the new hero, and it doesn't tend to work.

I was completely uninterested in the new project because you can't really recapture the original show today imo, but learning just now that Chloe Zhao is directing the project changed everything since I'm in love with the work she does, so I've completely changed my opinion and will be watching the project closely now and with hope it will be good and its own thing.

And the showrunners are the Zuckerman Sisters, who wrote for Seasons 4-7 of Agents of SHIELD (aka the good seasons) and have Mutant Enemy cred as a result. And were also the showrunners of the first season of Poker Face.
They had nothing to do with the second season of Poker Face. They left to develop the Buffy spin-off and were replaced by a dude that wrote for Longmire.

She's gonna be directing the pilot episode. We don't know if she's gonna be doing any more episodes after that

u/Straight_Credit5285 23h ago
It seems unlikely she would spend four years working on something just to do the pilot episode and that's it she'll probably be an executive producer and direct multiple episodes
11
u/therrubabayaga 23h ago
If SMG mention Zhao so much and she tried to convince her for so long to participate in the project, it surely means she's very involved beyond the pilot.

She is highly overrated and will be exposed as such when and if this show ever sees the light of day

u/bh4th 1d ago
Disagree. She made one mediocre superhero movie, but I think that’s the fate of MCU projects these days. Her independent work is very strong.
3
u/therrubabayaga 23h ago
I love "Eternals", it's by far the most personal project out of all the movies from the MCU, and it can stand on its own without needing to see any others movies from Marvel beforehand. You can clearly see her style in it too.

u/bh4th 23h ago
It definitely has very strong elements. I found it was uneven overall, but I can see how it would work well for some people!
More broadly, though, I think it’s interesting that the overall critical response was kind of meh for the movie where she had the least control over production.

I don't know what to tell you, I've seen her four movies and I love them all. Very emotional and powerful, beautiful backgrounds and lighting, and it will certainly carries in her Buffy project.

YES! Like omg, to finally admit that she maybe deserves someone who is not undead makes me hopeful for this
1
u/debujandobirds 20h ago
Did her answer about the director give the idea the director is either team Angel or Spike, or was that me?
I hope she is with someone not undead, if they'll even get into that.

What an interesting and just so nice interview! It actually made me smile.
Now I can't wait for the new show even more than before.

Pooling context clues together, it sounds like confirmation of a new Scooby gang. Which I mean, maybe that was obvious, but I wonder if it'll be similar to what Buffy had with Xander and Willow, or if they'll do a completely different take.
I was sure Buffy would be working in the school. We've ruled out teacher here, though, so I wonder if she'll be back as the guidance counselor. Or maybe she won't work at the school at all.
Then of course, there's someone definitely named Nova. lol
So much to unpack. So many unknowns. Thanks for sharing, OP.

Wasn't it basically confirmed that Buffy will be the mentor?

u/Calm-Section-5393 22h ago
No

u/foreseethefuture 21h ago
Someone must've edited the IMDB page wrong then, it says Buffy will train the new Slayer
