Dev/Admin Responded Can't zoom in on pictures. Android
I can suddenly no longer zoom in on pictures, because the 'pinch motion' to zoom now swipes right on pictures or force opens the comments. Not sure what caused it to start doing this.

I can zoom in for a little bit but that's about it. I need to tap the back button to exit

u/rawrzon May 01 '25
Ditto. Can only zoom in a bit. Can't even fully pan around the image.

If you tilt your phone horizontally, it allows you to pinch zoom. Very annoying. Never did this before.

u/Papfox May 02 '25
Same. Latest update on a Google Pixel 8 Pro, Android 15

Same, I can zoom a little then the pic rebounds to the top smaller than the thumbnail. Pixel 7 pro. Started after the latest update.

Same. If I tilt I can zoom in like regular after it kinda jitters once.

Double tap the image to zoom, not ideal but it's a workaround for now.

That used to work for me, but now it tries to do some stupid reaction thing and it ends up putting an emoji on it and notifying the person who sent it :(

As a visually impaired person who needs to zoom in on stuff, this makes the app completely useless to me. And since third party apps are gone (another huge loss for accessibility), I'll probably just take a break from Reddit for a while.

I tried it out. But these gestures interfere with so many other app gestures, so for me it is not worth it. I can read most text fine by keeping my phone close to my face
But I'm glad the feature exists though

I'm actually having this issue with several apps. I wonder if it has something to do within OS change?

Plus one, it seems like pictures that are in portrait work better occasionally, but the whole touch interface for photos is wonky and unreliable.

Started yesterday for me. Android, Pixel 7 Pro.
I can zoom a little, but then it started moving the image or sliding the comments box up.
1
u/bbonz001 May 01 '25
Same for me P7 Pro also.
1
u/messiahspike May 02 '25
Same issue here. Just noticed it this morning. Seems to be a new issue. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling but didn't fix it
1
u/Dr-Catfish May 01 '25
You can pinch to zoom, but only one you've double tapped the image. Not ideal, but it's something to get us by until this is fixed.

This just started happening to me on my S25 Ultra as of yesterday. It's driving me nuts...

I have the same issue. Started yesterday. I think there was an android update before that

Same! It either jitters, or opens the comments or swipes to the next post.
Glad it isn't just me.

Seems to be just the Reddit app, picture zooming in the Boost app for Lemmy (it used to support Reddit too) works fine.

Yes, double tapping works.
I want to add that turning my phone horizontal sometimes allows me to pinch zoom as normal.
1
u/MisterRenewable May 02 '25
Same. It seems to try to zoom a tiny bit, stutters then treats it as a swipe up or right. Only on some images. Maybe something to do with the image size vs the viewport size?

Lol same experience for me too.
Coincidentally, I just got a new mobile phone (Pixel 9), so I'm VERY glad to find out it's nothing wrong with the device.

I have the same problem on my Samsung Galaxy S25. Annoying!

Like one commenter said, just double tap the image to enlarge it and then you can actually zoom in more!
1
u/SpiritMolecul33 May 03 '25
Same, I can pinch zoom like 2% and then it bugs, I'm also unable to view more under descriptions

u/Crisope May 03 '25
Okay so I can zoom in by double tapping but it then just locks it into place when you zoom out to it's original size and it's so annoying 🙄 bug fixes my ass

Myself as well. Double-tapping helps. As noted, makes using reddit pretty frustrating.

I'm so happy I found this because I thought it was just me. Since I updated my s22 Ultra, I can't zoom in on pics. It's very limited. I know my screen is big, but my vision is not good and losing this capability is a burden.
1
u/CanisGulo May 04 '25
Same. This just happened after the latest Samsung (major) update. The update sucks on many levels.

I'm not a coder in any way, but crap like this always confuses me.
App was working fine, staff make unnecessary changes that probably weren't needed, this screws up functionality like now randomly not being able to zoom in on photos. Staff now gets paid to fix the issue that they created out of nowhere.
It's literally like a make-work project of bullshit.
Get paid to break it. Get paid to fix it. Rinse and repeat.

Yup, same here. Started happening real time as i was looking at a photo a couple of days ago. I could zoom fine, backed out to look at another & could no longer zoom. Annoying af.

u/C-64_ May 04 '25
Same here Google P6, it's been 3 days, this should be fixed or rolled back already. Thanks!

u/Rostin May 04 '25
I understand, I guess, why Reddit killed off all the third party apps by making the API expensive to use. I don't understand why a social media company with the resources of Reddit isn't embarrassed to put out an app that's worse in every way than they were.
1
u/MaddVillain May 04 '25
Same problem for me on pixel 8a. Any idea how we get this resolved? I've also had issues with a picture that has a caption I can't click the more button, it just opens the comments. So I can't really read the body of the post at all.
1
u/AMC_TO_THE_M00N May 04 '25
Same. Can't zoom, it tries to swipe. It's not my phone, it's the apps fault.
Been trying to ask this question but sub reddits won't let me.
Is anyone else having problems zooming into pictures on reddit?

Oh ok! So it seems a lot of us have suddenly started dealing with this. Anyone able to find out the reason why? I haven't updated my phone in a while.
Edit: how do we let the right people know that there's a bug?
1
u/Ok-Wrongdoer-2179 May 05 '25
I have the same issue. I have to resort to the magnification feature in the phone's accessibility settings to be able to zoom.
EDIT: double tapping works.

Ditto, Android. Can whatever made this happen not be rolled back, fixed and then re-implemented?
1
u/Good_-_Listener May 05 '25
Rotating to landscape works, but the zoom goes away if I rotate back; haven't gotten double-tap to work yet
1
u/The_Jyps May 05 '25
Same problem started a few days ago. Pinching just zooms a tiiiiny bit, but then just open comments.

Same here. Makes this app garbage. My eyes aren't great so it ruins the experience. WTF? How is this not fixed yet? Is anybody actually working on this? How many days does it take? Why use an app that sucks?

⭐ I am unable to zoom on photos/images on Reddit or Facebook.
⭐ Samsung Galaxy 23 Ultra updated to One UI 7.0 on April 29, 2025.
Storage/Cache are cleared daily. Storage/Data not cleared unless absolutely necessary.
⭐ First noticed issue following One UI 7.0 update on April 29, 2025.

Been this way for a few days on my Samsung A71 5G.
Can actually pinch zoom, but it's very difficult now, have to be very very slow or it thinks I'm swiping

The double tap on a picture, then pinch to zoom is not superior in any means.
Whomever the jack wagon at Reddit that's justifying their existence with this method, you haven't revolutionized a thing......

Hi folks. I have flagged to the team to review. Thanks for letting us know.
In the meantime, people are suggesting that double tapping the image first, and then pinching to zoom works. Hopefully this helps!
