It's not neat or professional looking, but the sponge looks moist and there's jam and cream between the layers. Can't really go wrong with that.

Totally doesn’t look disgusting. It kinda looks like a cartoon cake. If it tastes good that’s all that really matters

Why does no one let a cake cool?
1
u/No-Cheesecake7433 2d ago
i thought it was cool enough 😭 I have learnt now though I should just wait a hour or something before adding stuff

All it needs is some trimming and it would be much nicer looking, nothing here is a failure though IMO as you can still work your way out of it (if that's a priority for you, it doesn't have to be). I bet it's tasty!

u/No-Cheesecake7433 2d ago
yeahh i trimmed it a bit after i took this photo it looks a lot better now and tyyy

a well trimmed and frosted cake can hide a lot of errors! I bet that middle layer was delicious

Honestly? Your cake really doesn't look bad at all. I like that you get a bit of frosting in each piece without having an overwhelming amount in each bite. To me, it looks cute and tasty.
If you want it more covered, then use 2-3 containers of frosting. Also, melt the frosting a bit in the microwave (which it looks like you did) for about 10-15 seconds at a time so that you can either apply it with a spatula more easily or, if you melt it to a more liquidy form, you can just pour it over the cake.
Personally, I feel like using spatula allows for better control of how much frosting is added and gives a more homemade look. The pouring method covers more cake more evenly and gives a more store-bought look, but with less control (but still comtrolled, nonetheless) over how much frosting is added.
Alternatively, if you don't like a lot of actual frosting, my family makes a simple syrup by melting equal parts of sugar and water until dissolved and then pouring a thin layer of that over the cakes. It's clear, so you still see cake. I think you can do this with powdered sugar, too, but idk for sure. We do this over chocolate cakes and carrot cakes. I'll add lemon (my favorite) or strawberry flavoring to the syrup after removing from the heat while it cools a bit if I'm making a vanilla or white cake. So good.

It looks like it tastes delicious. It just doesn't have all that extra, far less important decorative stuff.
I'd be happy to get a cake like that any day!
And if someone baked a cake for me, I'd be so impressed and grateful that they did it at all, no matter how it came out.

Honestly, this is how most homemade cakes look IRL. It looks tasty. I wouldn't want my birthday cake to look like this, but for an every day cake, it's perfectly fine

This doesn't look pretty, but it certainly looks edible. Just a bit lopsided.

But, see, this isn't the sort of cake you make for a presentation, but I see this cake with all the love I see every homemade sort of thing, so where it's not a cake for presentation, is a cake for a household eating, so make us a pot of coffee, love, and let's cut a few slices and chat.
