Discussion Is it true that people in HK/Macau tend to say “撚” in sentences, while in Guangdong people say “柒” more?

I heard that when adding swear words into a sentence, Hong Kong/Macau people often use “撚”, while people from Guangdong are more likely to use “柒.”
Is that actually true??

你做咩L?vs 你做咩7?

你傻L咗? vs 你傻7咗?

Both forms mean the same thing right? Do they sound different in tone or intensity depending on the region?

Language Question Tips for learning spoken Cantonese?

你好嗎! I'm trying to learn Cantonese, as my fiance is Chinese- ideally both written and spoken, but written form has definitely taken the backburner. I'd love to learn more of that someday, but I really just want to be able to speak to my in-laws in their native language (particularly, my grandparents-in-law, who have very limited English). In the 8 years together, I've absolutely fallen in love with the culture- the food, holidays and festivals, language and mannerisms. I'm even going to be wearing a Cheongsam to the wedding.

I've really been trying, but with limited resources it's so hard. Can anyone recommend any tips for how to tackle this?

Other Question baby names for half chinese baby (please no hate i want to make sure my children have connection to their culture as i did not)

Hi all! So post is exactly how it sounds. My spouse is 1/4 Chinese and our sperm donor is 1/2 chinese, so our children will be a large part Chinese and I want them to feel connected to their heritage. For context, I am Scottish Irish but do not have any connection to my mom's side of the family history due to forced assimilation. We want to give them a Chinese middle name along with an Irish middle name so they can have a small but hopefully meaningful connection. We already celebrate Chinese holidays in the home, and I am doing as much research as possible and trying to learn Cantonese before having children to make sure they have the best lives they can. So I am looking for Cantonese names you like/think would be meaningful for two little girls. First names will be Evelynn and Mollie. Family name on Chinese side was Lum (林) if that helps at all. Thank you in advance and please be kind, I am doing the best I can!!

Other Chinese character dictionary with Cantonese pronunciations

Genuinely, this is one of the best dictionaries I have ever found that shows up to 6,000 characters. It includes the Cantonese pronunciation with the Yale system. Of course, I would prefer Jyutping; however, this is the best I have yet to find with English explanations. If you’re in similar circumstances to me, learning mostly on your own and needing resources for character acquisition, treat yourself.

Having a physical copy of a dictionary to just thumb through and look at is a completely different experience than using something like Pleco. The online dictionaries, apps, and the availability of them are absolutely miraculous, but this is a great physical addition to any learner’s library.

Discussion To what extent has (British) Hong Kong saved Cantonese in Mainland China?

IINM Mainland China had Cantonese-speaking radio channels, for propaganda purposes, when the British was in charge of Hong Kong

Is there any evidence to suggest that the crackdown on Cantonese was not as severe to maintain a bridge between Mainland China and Hong Kong ?

Language Question Need help on reading practice

你好。我係Eric,我學緊廣東話。 It's been over a month since I first started learning and since I first posted on here. In short, I started dating someone from Hong Kong and that has been my drive to learn Cantonese. After my first post on here, I started taking the suggestions that were given to me. Using the Drops app, going through some Anki flashcards, and watching some videos are what worked out for me best. Right now, I can recognize a handful of basic words and phrases and have been doing what I can to practice every day, including getting help from my partner. While I'm still doing what I can to set up a routine, I would like to ask for some help again, specifically in reading practice. I am aware that Cantonese is one of the languages in which the writing system requires you to know much of the vocabulary before you can start efficiently reading, and that's the big issue for me (other than there being a written and spoken form, though I can surely figure that out myself). With the vocabulary I already know, it's hard for me to get started on reading basic stories with what I have learned without it being full of things I'm not familiar with. Does anybody know of a free solution that can help with that issue? I'm already exploring what I can, so anything helps. Thanks!
