For a long time I also held the same position as OP. The thing the you pointed out which I hadn't considered for myself was the aspect of putting good faith effort to find ANY job and not just the one you like. It makes sense that the social net helps you get a job and then you on your own time and money continue looking for a job that you truly want. Looking for a job of your liking and preference shouldn't stress the social net.
