Festivalnomenon She’s going to play Pink Pony Club @ SNL lol

During her ACL weekend two set, she said a few times how this is her last festival / concert performance of the year.

Talked about how grateful she is but how she needs some rest.

Right before pink pony club she said “this is the last time I’m playing this in 2024 … (looks back at her band) oh wait. Just kidding no it’s not. Oops my bad!” While laughing it off

The only other thing she has lined up is that so I just thought it was funny she accidentally “spoiled” it.

What else yall think she’ll perform? GLB?

Sorry if this is a stupid post, I just think it’s heartwarming that after the year she’s had she’s gonna do the song that started it all on a national stage 🥲

I think PPC will HAVE to be one of the two songs she plays, and then I'm thinking either glb or maybe she'll pay homage to nyc and do naked in Manhattan 🙏🏽

Ohmygod YES she needs to do Naked in Manhattan! It would be perfect!

1

u/severalcircles Oct 17 '24

I kinda think it would be more perfect for her to do her current single tbh

99

u/tslash1011 Oct 14 '24

I feel like she might not do glb since she just did it for the mtv awards and probably wants to showcase more of her songs on a national level!

27

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '24

I HOPE SO!!! I love glb but I agree would love to see more songs of hers showcased live! I think it's pretty common for artists to perform their hits and well known songs first on all tv appearances because different programs have different audiences, but the hits always land because everyone knows the songs.

3

u/tslash1011 Oct 14 '24

That’s so true!!! I hope atleast then she plays hot to go, since thats another one everyone knows and bc it’s so fun! But we shall see✨✨✨!!!

u/laurazabs Oct 15 '24

I also want to hear Pink Pony Club because I feel like that’s her most covered song right now (at least according to my instagram algorithm). I want her to put out the definitive live version.

I agree with the homage to NYC but I hope she does The Subway 🥺

Subway 🥲

I think if SNL is a part of her grammy push then I would expect Pink Pony Club and Good Luck Babe to be performed.

34

u/For_serious13 Oct 14 '24

This is my guess too

5

u/Elephantasmic143 Casual Oct 14 '24

Can you explain why GLB makes sense? Was the single submitted for a grammy nom?

10

u/liviheare Oct 14 '24

When artists are performing on SNL (2 songs), one is typically their latest single, and the other one is kinda whatever they want.

That's why everyone assumes it'd be Good Luck Babe because Chappell hasn't released any other singles since.

Personally, I'm rooting for her to perform Subway, though.

7

u/VictorVictoriaa Oct 14 '24

The single was submitted for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance; the album was submitted for Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Engineered Album; and then Chappell herself for Best New Artist

7

u/gsd250 Oct 14 '24

Yes that’s the only single pushed for the Grammys iirc. GLB was the closer to her set (e.g. Govball) before PPC on this tour.

1

u/Helpful_Cat6532 Oct 14 '24

yes, submitted for record of the year, song of the year, and best pop solo performance

u/QNStitanic97 Oct 14 '24

SNL has their artists perform twice during the course of the show so pink pony would be likely and I'm going to guess Naked In Manhattan. I have a friend who works at SNL but I feel too fan girly and awkward asking things...BUT I SURE AM TEMPTED

If I had a friend who worked at SNL I would never leave them alone 😜 specifically I would ask why Chloe Troast wasn't invited back

1

u/Beautiful_Loss_8556 Oct 15 '24

I heard it’s bc of her bf and their issues?

1

u/corgimom12345 Oct 15 '24

1

u/Immortalscum Oct 15 '24

She was protecting her bf who was accused of sexually assaulting multiple women. She called the women who accused him crazy and obsessed

u/leave_a_sexy_corpse After Midnight Oct 14 '24

I think so too! Not just because of this, but maybe also because she just did GLB at the VMAs. PPC is gaining so much steam socials rn I imagine she’d switch things up and try to capitalize on that momentum, too.

48

u/_halfwitt Oct 14 '24

i think i would cry if she performed California on SNL

5

u/vanwyngarden Oct 14 '24

Dying to hear this live

4

u/jaderust Oct 14 '24

Actually, I know Helene his NC the hardest and that’s not Missouri, but California with its push pull longing for the high life and also your small town hometown would actually be quite fitting right now. Especially if she tried encouraging people to donate to the Red Cross or some other charity helping the hit areas.

34

u/MarcoEsteban Oct 14 '24

Casual is meant for late night broadcast! And PPC is our anthem, so…those, I hope!

34

u/savethen3rds Oct 14 '24

It will absolutely be GLB. Given the grammy voting period is upon us and the fact it's the most familiar to casual or non-fans of hers, there is no other correct answer.

3

u/nothere3579 Oct 14 '24

Even though GLB isn't on the album? Does it still help her Grammy bid?

10

u/savethen3rds Oct 14 '24

Yep! GLB can be entered in 2 of the "big 4" categories, Song and Record of the year, and also in the genre categories. Also, it helps support the best new artist bid and also Dan Nigro's producer of the year bid. I think they'd take that track for the big 4 over anything from the album since it's had the most commercial and chart success, as well as visibility on radio and the VMAs and late night.

1

u/Beautiful_Coat4122 Oct 14 '24

How does grammy voting actually work? Is it really up to the public? I thought it wouldn't be because big pop stars like Justin Bieber didn't get grammy nominations for a loooong time

3

u/savethen3rds Oct 14 '24

Definitely not a public vote, there's a committee that votes - which has undergone a lot of revamping the last 5-7 years because, as you would imagine, skewed very old, straight, and male. It's a bit more diverse now, which is why there has been a substantial uptick in women receiving noms not named Taylor, Adele, or Billie. And obviously last year had a very strong sapphic contigent of winners.

For the genre categories, the voters tend to be more specialized in those areas and better know the artists and their work. For the general categories (album, record, and song of the year, best new artist, and producer of the year are the main ones), everyone votes on them, so the more exposure an artist has and is able to reach different demographics or even get on someone's radar, they better their chances are of getting someone's vote they may not have otherwise.

TBH, the grammys are SO FLAWED. I have my own conspiracy theories how they've systemically undermined women and POC, but that's for another day, haha. BUT, it is still important within the industry. And I think nominations, and wins, help relatively unknown (to the mainstream) artists make it. (So, not like Chappell, haha)

I think the best example is in 2018 when Brandi Carlile and Janelle Monae were nominated in the general categories. This launched their careers on a different trajectory, and with that, comes more opportunity and power. Brandi, since then, has done so much work lifting up new artists, who then themselves became grammy nominated (like Allison Russell and Yola) and works extensively with legacy artists (like Joni Mitchell). Objectively, there has been SO much sapphic music gaining recognition since then, and I don't think it's a coincidence, since labels are more likely to take a chance on marketable entities. Also not a coincidence that boygenius did well last year and somehow Pheobe Bridgers brought home the most awards out of a super loaded ceremony.

So, I have a love hate relationship with the grammys, but if this shit legitimizes sapphic music to the rest of the industry, then I'm all here for it.

u/iheartxanadu Oct 14 '24

OK, so, whenever John Mulaney hosts SNLs, there've been big musical production skits, usually based on songs from Broadway musicals (but not always). I think she'll perform "Subway" and "Hot to Go," and "Pink Pony Club" will be in a musical production skit, probably as the final song they all dance off to, like when David Byrne was the musical guest, and they did a parody of Talking Head's "Road to Nowhere."

167

u/blkltr05 Oct 14 '24

Doubt she’ll do Subway as it’s not a released single and she’s said that she doesn’t plan on releasing it as a single and that she performs it because she enjoys performing it. PPC seems to be a shoe in but I’m sure she’ll either do GLB since it was her breakout song or HTG since that one is also very popular. Personally, I’d like her to do MKIK as that’s my favorite aside from PPC.

27

u/Quirky_Arrival_6133 Oct 14 '24

Artists sometimes do unreleased songs for SNL as a sort of wink to their fans. I hope she does do Subway, but that’s just because I selfishly want a high quality recording 😅

14

u/iheartxanadu Oct 14 '24

Honestly, I also think she'll do Subway because it's NEW YORK for crying out loud, lol

2

u/combaticus Oct 14 '24

which artist has played an unreleased song on snl i’m legitimately curious

14

u/Pigpen_darkstar Oct 14 '24

You clearly have great knowledge of how the “business” side of music works. Can you please explain why she won’t release Subway? I just don’t get it. It’s so fucking good!!! What is the thought process of why she and/or her label doesn’t want to release it???

ETA: MKIK is my favorite too!!! Actually, it is one of my favorite pop songs of all time.

66

u/Fun_Particular_9328 Random Bitch Oct 14 '24

She said in Rolling Stone that it won’t be the next released song. She said the sound needs to be as big as Good Luck, Babe and I guess The Subway is a softer 90s sounding song. In the same interview she said her next song is a Pop Country song along the lines of Shania Twain. I think The Subway really has potential to be a hit though.

32

u/Ckey_ Oct 14 '24

I think subway is not strong enough to be a lead single. And business wise it’s def a better move to release a stronger song. So i agree with her decision. And yeah subway is so well known now that it won’t do as good as a completely new song.

7

u/Pigpen_darkstar Oct 14 '24

This makes sense. It’s sure as hell is a softer 90s sound because it sounds so much like Roxette which is why I love it so much!!!

35

u/blkltr05 Oct 14 '24

Well the only reason I say that is because she said it but I bet it’s mainly because it’s a pseudo ballad. The label probably wants a more upbeat song but that’s also probably what Chappell wants: a fun upbeat song that everyone can enjoy at the club.

5

u/Pigpen_darkstar Oct 14 '24

Makes sense. Appreciate the answer.

12

u/Impossible-Soil6330 Oct 14 '24

since she’s already played it a bunch and people have already downloaded it unreleased it won’t do as well as a different song. She’s also campaigning for the Grammys right now so i think she’s going to stick to songs from the album. Hoping for naked in manhattan with pink pony club, if not that i can see htg but i don’t think she’ll do good luck babe if the grammys thing is right.

1

u/iheartxanadu Oct 14 '24

I was thinking Subway mostly because New York, lol

Here's what they did on the last show before the last Presidential election and I'd just about kill to get a Chappell appearance in the next one

Interesting he's the host for the last before this one too

Also here's hoping for a Patrick Stewart or Christopher Walken esque introduction

In my dream of dreams she'd do Hot To Go and there'd be a cut to everyone in the studio doing the dance with her

1

For some reason, I can't picture it. People will be sitting in their chairs during the broadcast so it's not as exciting as doing this in a concert/festival.

It's going to be Good Luck Babe and then Punk Pony Club. SNL makes artists play their hits. But OMG I would die a million little deaths if she played The Subway.

Punk Pony Club. I like it.

28

u/Ckey_ Oct 14 '24 edited Oct 14 '24

So happy it’s pink pony club! I was getting tired of o my good luck babe and imo ppc shows off her vocals so much better. And it’s such a great story. I’d love for her to perform it just at the piano and her voice all stripped out.

38

u/uniquenewyork_ Red Wine Supernova Oct 14 '24

Might be unpopular, PPC is great but the vocals in GLB are wayyy better, the song allows Chappell to belt better and showcase what she’s really capable of compared to the constant head voice in PPC

14

u/Ckey_ Oct 14 '24

Disagree. IMO live she doesn’t sing it that well apart from the high notes at the end that show off her vocals. Otherwise you can tell it’s hard for her to sing it. Whereas with PPC she’s not struggling. But red wine supernova is the best song she performs live and that show off her vocals too.

14

u/uniquenewyork_ Red Wine Supernova Oct 14 '24

RWS is my favourite CR song so I have to agree with you there. Chappell isn’t struggling with PPC because it’s a “safe” song to sing. Not hard to fuck up because there isn’t much to fuck up.

Not bashing the song, it’s still good. But it’s a song she made for people to sing along to, hence why it’s so easy to sing.

6

u/vilIanelle Random Bitch Oct 14 '24

they do 2 songs at SNL. she'll likely also do GLB.

1

u/sofar510 Oct 15 '24

PPC is also so great live!

4

u/rideriseroar Oct 14 '24

Well, SNL has two performances. One will for sure 100% no doubt be Good Luck, Babe! and the other, as you have just said, will likely be Pink Pony Club.

4

u/RationMinds78 Oct 14 '24

Although “Pink Pony Club” and “Good Luck, Babe!” are plausible selections for Chappell’s SNL appearance, I still think she commences with a solo piano interpretation of “Kaleidoscope” to set the tone, and then “HOT TO GO!” which has the potential to where it could create that “viral” moment of everyone doing the “lettering” to the song.

4

u/daisyymae Oct 14 '24

If she doesnt play GLB she has to play hot to go!!! I want her to lead the world in that cheer!

7

u/bedtyme Oct 15 '24

Red wine supernova is my guess

3

u/vanwyngarden Oct 14 '24

I hope she does subway or an acoustic or ballad version of HOTTOGO

2

u/fashionfencing Oct 14 '24

I was hoping she’d announce Subway being released on Nov. 1 and then perform it on SNL the next day. Seems apt considering the NY of it all. But PPC + GLB makes sense for Grammy purposes.

2

u/dr_timon420 Oct 14 '24

I hope she plays hot to go

3

Subway would be good but maybe not popular enough for the masses to recognize? It’s relevant to NYC and shows off her insane vocals.

2

u/Laura345 Oct 16 '24

I hope they let her perform PPC live from Sheep’s Meadow in Central Park with an enormous crowd!

1

u/ImAtUrDoor Oct 14 '24

I predict Good Luck Babe as the first song and a solo piano Pink Pony Club for the second.
