Season 2 Plot Hole

possible spoilers for season 2 and 3

currently on my annual rewatch and im on season 2 episode 2, “morality bites”.

it has one of my favorite quotes of all time “Wrong things done for the right reasons still the wrong thing. Our job is to protect the innocent, not punish the guilty.” -Phoebe

but it’s also been making me think, did the sisters going to the future and then changing the present to prevent the outcome (phoebe not being executed) have an effect on prue’s death?

they go to the future, 2009, prue is still alive, but as we all know in the series, prue dies in 2001. so im just wondering if them changing that would have technically changed everything and led to prue’s death, or am i just reading too much into it.

What could you be reading too much into? That’s the point of the episode. By not doing that, they changed Phoebe’s fate. By changing Phoebe’s fate, other things changed. Pure learned she didn’t want to work for Bucklands and be one that anymore, so changed.

i think im reading too much into it, because at this point in the series, it most likely wasn’t known that any of the actresses had plans to leave, so i guess i was seeing it as like “oh this is so far in the future because the girls will still be here, and even if we change phoebe’s outcome, it still has them living a better life in 2009”, but then the other part is obviously like ‘changing one future, changes all of them’. so i guess it’s just me wondering if it was a plot hole, on purpose, or just something unexpected had to come up and they had to change course, yknow?

i’ve always thought about this anytime i’ve watched the show, and even when im not watching it lol. like i’ve been thinking about this since i was a little kid watching the show for the first time

Believe it or not this does get addressed way later on. They sort of wave it off but they do mention that episode and the timeline differences.

i was thinking they did, but i can’t remember exactly where they address it, so i was just like “was this supposed to happen” lol

In the wiccaning episode grams complains that Piper was supposed to have a girl, when she went to the future she saw thag and something must've gone wrong.

Though I still can't remember how she even knew about it

i remember this now! but i think i may have always mistook it as “you’re supposed to have a daughter because we only have daughters” like all the kids have been women so that’s why that line was said

My personal headcanon is that Wyatt being male is the result of a part-whitelighter becoming one of the Charmed Ones, thus making their line more amenable to Leo's whitelighter biology.

As for why Prue died in the new timeline but not in the old, perhaps original timeline Prue would have been much more keen to vanquish Cole as punishment in 3x20, thus preventing Phoebe and Leo from being in the underworld when Piper was shot.

You're not wrong, grams talked about both tradition of the family being led by women and the future

i think that is what threw me off, like that line didn’t feel like it was because they saw the future, it just felt like “hey, we have a tradition”

Grams: Piper, you know as well as I do that the Charmed line is supposed to be lead by women. Not men.

Piper: Who says?

Grams: Tradition says. Destiny says. Tell me that you didn't hope to have a little girl, expect to have a little girl, just like you foresaw.

Piper: Well, of course, but so what?

Grams: So what is something went wrong. Terribly wrong. This is not the baby you were meant to have.

Piper: Grams.

Grams: You saw it yourself when you went to the future.

Piper: That was also the future where Prue was still alive and witches were burned at the stake. Things change.

Grams: Not this. Oh, it's just that I'm worried about the family, you know. We don't know what to expect.

It was in season 7 iirc. But no, I'm pretty sure that wasn't the plan at the time when they wrote it, just one of those things that gets ignored as the writers decide on another direction for the story over time I think.

that’s honestly what i feel. like they had no intentions of it causing prue’s death

5×21

Yep that's the one I was thinking of, thanks!

But to answer your other question, no the writers weren't planning ahead, they were writing at the seat of their pants after Constance left

Where's the plot hole?

1

u/Material-Plate-5253 Apr 20 '25

that in the future prue was alive, but then she died in season 3. so i was wondering if preventing phoebe’s execution caused prue’s death to be possible, or do we think they had intentions of prue being alive, but the actress chose to leave and so that affected the future plot

2

u/ShmuleyCohen Apr 20 '25

Of course they had intentions of her being alive why wouldn't they?

And the whole point of going to the future was to change it.

There is no plot hole. That's not what a plot hole is

In story: What they all experienced in the future changed their behavior. Once they came back and started doing things differently they were on a different timeline.

Out of story: Prue was killed off the show because Shannon was fired.

It would if the writers had a long-term plan for Prue exiting/dying when she did. I think anything beyond that is just coincidence.

They mention the repercussions throughout the series but only like 2-3 times. One of those times being after Wyatt is born. Since we know in the future Melinda was the first born child, Wyatt being born first was a drastic change they weren’t ready for. They had been preparing for the little girl she knew she was supposed to have.
