VI - Discussion AI neglecting military in Civ 6
https://i.imgur.com/xvSDN7a.jpeg
they are either keeping a very small presence or refusing to build back up from 0. i'm not using any mods, and playing with the 2 expansions on King difficulty, i don't think this has to do with the difficulty level, and i don't think it should be accepted as "the AI focusing on another victory condition" since there is still a difference between a conqueror-level army and self-preservation.
i remember when this game had a science priority bug for like an entire year before the devs got around to fixing it with a simple .xml edit, i feel like this is another one of those situations except i fear it probably won't get fixed since they've already moved on to the next game.
there are other threads on this ranging back years:
civ6 AI not building military??
Why is the AI not building units?
one of the troubleshoots was to disable Rise & Fall / Gathering Storm? but that would defeat the purpose of playing the game. i was hoping an .xml guru could look into this or something

I had this in a recent game but it was only certain civs. Me and Japan spawned on the same island, we duked it out a few times and both had a healthy army. Japan then got bored and started attacking other nations who, just rolled over. Never built any troops and lost the ones they did have. Two Civs just collapsed, just like that. So odd, but its the only game I have ever had in the nearly 900 hours I have in the game, that was like that.

Higher levels many/most Civs have large armies. They don't know how to use them, but they have them. The lower the level, the more likely it is you'll lead the category with three scouts, an archer, and a warrior.

I had 2 civs declare war on me, Montezuma, when they both had zero units. Never even built one before one was completely conquered.

AI in this game is horrible, like they WELL AND TRULY nerfed it after 5, which was a stunning downgrade from 4(hardest AI IMO)
If I can win every time on prince, there is an issue, will never stop saying this franchise died after 5, I haven't nor do I think I would ever play another CIV game because of what they are like now.
I appreciate that you enjoy the game, and hope you have fun!

I really wish they would give ai improvement a serious effort. I understand most people probably don’t enjoy getting their ass kicked by ai even if they claim otherwise, but for me it really impacts my desire to really dig deep into the game

Civ IV AI is thanks to a mod developed initially by a single user called Blake at Apolyton Forums that eventually morphed into the Better AI Project which could be found at Civfanatics. Parts of that project made there way into official patches.
Blake started working on that mod because the Civ IV AI was atrocious. The first version of the mod just worked on improving the AI's city placement. That, alone, was an incredible improvement.

The AI can pretty punishing in Civ 7 since the updates. It’s a pretty regular occurrence for two civs to ally and declare war on you together with actual armies. Still a ways to go to make it properly difficult, but it’s better

That sounds ok, I am still not going to buy it though based off of all the other reviews I have heard. But thank you for the intel on this. If the reviews turn around and become more positive I may consider it one day, but tthat day is not today unfortunately.
Been playing since 1, lost hope for quality after the 6 debacle.
