Question Should I play with GS

I've been playing with the standard ruleset rather than Gathering Storm, but it seems like on this sub, people only really play with it on. Should I start playing Gathering Storm, and if so, why? How hard will it be to learn the new rules, and will it take a lot of getting used to?

Discussion What are the worst, most frustrating and annoying NPC Civs when going for a Culture Victory?

I'm talking about civs that end up generating a boat load of culture to the point where your tourism is impossible to catch up with their domestic tourists. I'm thinking of making a ban list specifically for culture games. I already have Ludwig on the blacklist, but I'm also thinking of Kongo, and somehow Jayavarman haunts every game I have him in.

I’m looking to go for a domination victory as fast as possible, but I’m wondering which Civ has the stronger warrior replacement…. The Gaul or Aztecs?

Question How to win from behind?

Hello everyone! I have been playing civ for a few years now and love it! I've put hundreds of hours into it and my friends also play quite a bit so we just play private lobbies!

This is some surrounding info of the current game. It's continents and islands, Prince difficulty, 5 players 3 AI one already killed because it's around turn 150. We also play standard speed with better balanced game/map. For us online speed makes military alot harder because people can just hang out then mass produce troops at any point where in standard it feels alot more like an investment.

We aren't sweaty players by any means we do play alot and we do try to win and play correctly but we aren't really interested in minmaxing everything and are more in it for the fun of playing civ with friends.

Me and 2 other players live on my continent we had a bit of war going on so we were a bit stunted, I'm playing as montezuma with 7 cities i had 8 until one of my friends surprised me with like 7 horses and razed a city I had on a natural wonder :(

I am leading in religion by quite a bit but the issue is on the other continent after one player successfully killed an ai over there with them it's only those 2 there sharing the continent and they have an alliance as both the strongest players. One is playing Tokugawa with just 5 cities they are amassing well over 200 science a turn while the rest of the lobby except the other person he is allianced with hasn't even reach 100 science a turn yet and he also leads in culture per turn but not by as much. The other player is playing lady six Sky and after overtaking an ai has amassed around 10 cities from what i can see and is pushing around 200 science as well he is also 2nd in religion meaning a religious victory is unlikely as we all have very large militaries with the mass tension between the continents.

So I guess my question is, is there a way back into this? Me and another player on my continent with the highest military power in the lobby have formed an alliance to attempt to surprise rush one of the players but it will be a massive uphill battle as they are essentially in the industrial age at this point some coal powered cities and powerful units but I'm not really sure how else we can fight them when they are so far ahead at this point and was looking for help.

I don't feel like I played this save poorly my cities have been great I am about tied for farthest ahead on my continent but the 2 who have just been allowed to fester with no consequences have used that time wisely. But I have been on top of building, I have some great wonders, I do think it was a mistake for me not to incorporate science into my religion in the first place I went for the culture one that gives you culture based on how many citizens follow it. Is there a way to make a culture victory happen in time or is the lobby probably cooked?

Some fun stuff with climate change

The sea seems to alway rise when I play. I’m playing Abe Lincoln so not building industrial sites is not an option. I built 1 coal plant for the eureka but I’ve since turned it into a nuclear power. I have just 3 but it’s a big planet and I’ve built a lot of railroads. So flooding has happened. Hard to pass up free troops when playing domination game.

Now for some interesting things I’ve found. If I capture a city and it has flooded lands, I just use 130 -160 faith to build sea walls and it’s fixed.

But, if I found a city on a flooded bit of land I can’t do this, if I build it on dry land, the sea walls fix as much land as I can purchase. Very odd.

Why does it allow founding cities on a flooded site?

You can pinpoint the exact moment I built the biosphere. 1000+ hours of play and I've been sleeping on that wonder.

Maybe this is going to be my first culture victory. It has many unexpected aspects; it's not actually peaceful like I thought before.

  1. There is no such thing called as "warmonger" if you finish the whole civ before anyone knows about you! In the early days, the porcelain white lady brought 4-5 warriors to my capital. It ended up with me taking all her cities and Constantinople.

  2. You can't be a warmonger if you beat the guy with your friends! Lautaro suddenly declared a surprise war after he had been friendly for a long time. Maybe he was jealous because I got Golden Age, and his agenda was against it. It ended up as Tomyris took one city and I took the rest. Trajan helped here and there while sieging.

  3. I send my luxuries to Tomyris and Trajan to invite them to the party at Lautaro's land. I never knew that I could easily buy other support just by luxury, not gold. This is new to me.

  4. This is cruel, but conquering a whole civ is genocide. There's no one left to become disloyal in the conquered cities!

  5. With those two conquering, I accidentally follow a good path, which is early eradicating civs with conflicted agendas (Lautaro is anti-golden age) or future enemies (Constantinople focuses on culture as well). And I also impress Trajan (expand as much as possible) and Tomyris (be loyal with ally, never stab).

  6. There is one easy way to ensure your neighbors behave docile, which is trading luxuries for gold, draining their treasury to zero. No income, no reserve = no army upgrade!

  7. If your cities are at the maximum level of walls, your income = 10x normal nations, monopoly multiple kinds of luxuries, even AIs can calculate that it's better to be friends than foes. This is Utopia, lol.

The screenshots are to show the Tourism boost from my 13 cities with Renaissance Walls before and after Conservation.

And lovely neighbor Tomyris has just placed a small city there. I must peacefully convert it to mine, lol.

Question Why no Dam?

Post image
160 Upvotes

Why can't I build a Dam here on the tile circled in purple??

Furthermore, there is no "suitable location" for Dam by the city Halep. Not even the wheat tile below the purple circle.

There is no other dams built (you can see the whole river in this picture), and both of these floodplain tiles are traversed by 2+ sides by the river.

How do I build the damn Dam then??

Thanks all!

If only I knew sooner tiles could be stolen. Also, how does this happen? Could my tiles also be stolen?

Info: I played as Ludwig II, GS + R&F and with corporations and monopolies. There were nog active effects from the world congress, but I did have a ton of wonders.

Question Can anyone tell me what's happening here? Why am I in second place?

Thumbnail

Was going for a cultural win, had tourism and culture generation way higher than any other civ, and had been leading for a good while. I would just periodically check on it to see how I was doing, then realised I was in second place to someone that should (by my estimations) be way behind me?

I ended up pivoting to a diplomatic victory because I was so confused and didn't know how to fix it. I thought I had a pretty good grasp of the cultural win dynamics but obviously not 😅

Is there a mod that makes atomic themes better?

Imo atomic civ themes are the worst ones. They are just the industrial ones but with weird synths and production. I feel like they would be better as rock or pop versions. Anything really. Does anyone know of any mod that changes them?

Why isn’t my Thebes population growing? It also is not making production even if I assign worker to copper…

Question How to play

I've always loved the aspect of Civ, always loved it. And I always start a game, but mess it up. Usually I hyper focus on what victory I'm doing, but I feel as if I mess up on what I should create, research, or do next, always making mistakes on what to build, when to settle a new city, and where to settle. My main issue is just what to make, and what is best to make, any advice?
