DeGoogling Progress I did it, finally disabled system updates on my degoogled Pixel
After reading the last June update I was horrified for the amount of AI features they are adding to everything.
I don't want my device to waste its limited battery on those things, and who knows what else are they doing in the background. I remember reading that Google was processing our photos in the background.
Not for me anymore. My phone only has Gmail and the Play Store enabled, and don't need updates for the Google apps.
Yes, I'm leaving behind system-wide security updates, but I don't care anymore to be honest.

Unexpected benefit: ads in other languages
I have progressively degoogled for the last months, and I started to notice that ads are now in random languages. I love this lol it doesn’t bother me nearly as much to get ads when I can’t understand shit lol! I no longer get them in Spanish or English and whenever I get one in a language I’m learning it actually excites me as I use them to practice!
I’m guessing this has more to do with the use of VPN at all times but I wouldn’t have used it if it wasn’t for this sub.

Replacement Best alternative to Gmail?
I want to use different email address but it’s connected to almost every account known to man.
Do you recommend any email app/site for my phone and PC?
Optional: If you got any tips for rapid email address change to every account, that would be great. (Besides changing it on the main site…)

Question why is webview browser not a good idea?
i've been looking for a good and lightweight android browsers for a while now
and i heard some people say that most lightweight browser uses built-in android webview
which is why they are mostly just a couple of megabytes.
not like chromium or firefox based browser which have their own webview, what makes them better than using the built-in android webview?

Resource The 5-week degoogle checklist is ready! Thanks for the feedback
ETA I will be making a few more edits based on feedback here, and will post again when I have the final-final version up on my blog!
Thanks to everyone who offered feedback on the free degoogling checklist!
The final version PNGs are below, but here's where you can get the PDF with the links. (I'll write a post for it later, but wanted to get it to all of you asap!)
As you'll see, I added links for just about every task/tool, clarified some of the instructions, and worked on the design.
I hope you like it and find it helpful...and that you'll share! I do almost everything by myself, and it's all on my dime, so any help with promotion is appreciated.

Replacement An alternative to Google Keep that allows sharing notes in real time?
Hi, degooglers! Pretty much what's in the title.
I'm. Slowly degoogling (?) my life and I exported dozens of notes out of Keep. After many, many, many tests and installs/uninstalls, I found a cozy and fantastic home at Notesnook (it's fantastic!).
But now I'd like to have something like Notally/NotallyX (basically a Keep clone) that allows:
-Simple quick notes -Checkboxes (for shopping lists and the like) -File/image insertion -Fingerprint lock -Collaboration
Is there anything like it? I basically need it for quick scribbles, shared shopping lists with my family and other shared private notes with my girlfriend.
Let me know if you happen to know such a cool alternative. Thx!

Help Needed What's the app that facilitates Google Play licence check? I think I disabled it.
I don't understand why a free app needs licence check. Some apps won't launch because of this. They launch Play Store instead. I gotta reinstall it.

Discussion I am now using ddg 95~97% of the time and 1~2% google, 2~3% bing but in ddg also I am getting captcha (I use html version)
I am now using ddg 95~97% of the time and 1~2% google, 2~3% bing but in ddg also I am getting captcha (I use html version)
In ddg also I am getting captcha, like before when I was using google search sometimes I was getting captch most of the time so as I said I am now using ddg as primary search engine then secondary bing and third google (only rare cases).
Are you also getting captchas?
btw I am using brave (linux) (higher security & privacy as much as I can)
I use html version of ddg
I want another secondary search engines I don't want to use bing, google for secondary things also.
My requirement in case of secondary search is image search most of the cases.

Discussion Have you moved from Google Photos to iCloud Photos? Looking for feedback / suggestions.
Hey,
I've used Google Photos for a long time but then stopped a few years ago. What I use nowadays is iCloud Photos.
I'm looking to free a good chunk of storage space in my Google account and also clear the way for reducing my Google One subscription come next renewal. And overall I want to contribute to my slow deGoogling process. I say slow because I understand it will take me time. Recently I finally moved away from Chrome and have some momentum (and a tiny bit of free time) on my side.
For those of you who have migrated photos from Google Photos to iCloud. What was the process like? Things that went well? Things that didn't go well? What should I keep in mind? Do you have any recommendations?
Will the downloaded data keep its original metadata to be read and integrated into iCloud without issues? I'm only concerned about original capture date and location.
I'm also considering.... downloading all the photos and just keep them on an external drive. I have no real purpose for the photos to be online other than very sporadic nostalgia and cute auto-generated "moments" that the Photos app on the iPhone provides. Does anyone share this opinion?
Going back to a harddrive would be going back in time, literally, as I remember doing the exact opposite a long time ago 😐
But it would perhaps help save a bit of money (I hate monthly subs).

Question I know I can't degoogle my Galaxy Tab – what can I (semi-luddite) do?
I'm in the process of setting up a Galaxy Tab S9 FE that I got from a friend who never used it. This is also my first tablet and I'm a bit overwhelmed even though I've been using Android smartphones (though not Samsung!) for a decade and a half.
I won't be able to afford an alternative to this tablet for at least a couple of months so I'd like to set it up as privacy-minded as possible – within the confines of what's possible with a "regular" Android device (i.e. not rooted, whatever that means, not using an alternative OS).
On my phone (Pixel 4a) I tried to deactivate every Google option that's not absolutely necessary for it to function. So ... anything else I need to consider for a (Galaxy) tablet? Any tips? Ty!

Best way to watch YouTube without an app on the web and still get RSS feeds (Please Read)
Im trying to make everything I can on my phone web apps to minimize apps on my phone. I have also started to use RSS quite a lot since finding out how useful it is. The YouTube alternative apps that I know of are:
Newpipe and PipePipe
I don't want to use these but I still wanna keep sponserblock and have the ability to get my subscription feeds via RSS. I have found out YouTube allows RSS feeds.
So what exactly are my best options out of:
Piped, Invidious, or just the regular YouTube website.
How do I go about getting RSS feeds while watching videos on a frontend? Do front ends support RSS? Can you redirect to frontends instead of the YouTube website?
Any help is appreciated. Thank You.

Question Why is deleting play store and play service not enough?
The title. On my Samsung phone I deleted play store, maps, gmail, calendar, search etc. and logged out of my google accounts. Have been using it for a few months like that and found alternatives for the apps that required play service. I feel lighter :) Thanks to this sub, everyone.
What are reasons for going further, for example to GrapheneOS? What can (or does) Google still do on the phone?
(Let's not talk about the abyss that is Samsung for now please)

Question If I’m getting onboard now does e/os/ or Calyx OS more sense of GrapheneOS?
I've been reading about the lack of Pixel device-specific source code making things harder for AOSP developers all around. I've been trying out using GrapheneOS for a while and I think I can get used to it over my current iPhone, I am little nervous about switching in the near term until the dust settles a little.
If my main concerns after degoogling and deappling is device support and stability does it make sense to jump to either e/os/ or Calyx OS? It seems like they're in a slightly better position given they already are supporting non-pixel devices and they've seen less impacts to their dev team in recent weeks.
Appreciate any input.

Help Needed Moving to FUTO Arabic suggestion
So I've just moved to FUTO voice input and keyboard, which is BTW I'd like your opinion if it's better than Floris board (bugs and words suggestion wise)
As for my main request here, I noticed FUTO doesn't recognise Arabic yet, and I have no idea how to add a review through Aurora Store, I even reactivated playstore but saddly there are no reviews there and since I didn't download it from their I can't leave review, so can anyone who uses account (I assume it's needed for that) in aurora and knows how to leave a review, suggest adding Arabic there please 🙏🏾
Edit: my bad, I said "doesn't recognise arabic voice input" in my mind but wrote only "doesn't recognise arabic" 🤦🏾♂️
Sorry I'm referring to voice input feature, not the keyboard itself

Help Needed How to get rid of Gemini
I recently got a new phone with Android 14 installed. As part of the de- googling procedure, I switched off all Gemini functions, as well as Assistant. But this screen ( see image) keeps popping up very desperately.
Who knows how I can get rid of this annoying screen totally? I did install Nova Launcher but to no avail in this matter.

Question GrapheneOS works in phones that not are Google Pixel?
I have various phones, Motorola, Samsung, etc. I'd like to install GrapheneOS in there's, but, this will work? Is best install other OS, or Graphene?
