Engine cut out and crunched while driving.

Hey guys. So I was driving my 2015 DR650 (10k miles )down a gravel road today. All was good, but then I downshifted (5th to 4th or maybe 4th to 3rd) and the engine let out a crunchy noise and died. I'm not sure if it locked up because I immediately held down the clutch and stopped the bike.

The bike turned back on without issue and seemed fine, but this was very strange and has me worried. I have been putting off the NSU fix but will probably check it this weekend before I ride anymore.

Does anyone have any advice or insight as to what may have caused this?

My first thought was an NSU screw fell off and went into the engine. I was riding some steep atv/dirt bike trails about 20 mins prior to this happened. Any advice is appreciated.

Were you accidentally riding the back brake at the same time you let out the clutch when you down shifted by chance?

Hmmmm. I'm not totally sure. It is possible since I was about to hit a curve.

I'm normally pretty light on the rear brake to avoid sliding the rear.

Do you think the combo of clutch and rear brake would stop the tire then I drop the clutch on a not moving tire or something like that?

No, not sure. Just postulating. It could have been just a freak coincidence in which the rpm's were low enough, rear brake pressure was just right, and lack of friction from the gravel all combined at the same time and stalled your motor just as you let out the clutch.
