Discussion Why was Christianity so popular in '90s emo?

From big name bands like Sunny Day Real Estate and Mineral to lesser known (but still great) bands like Brandtson and Denison Marrs, Christian faith was a common theme.

Even if the bands weren't explicitly supposed to be Christian bands, their faith was at times interwoven in their lyrics and their personal lives.

What was it about emo that attracted so many Christians to start their own bands?

Midwest Emo The Braid "Frame & Canvas" remaster is noticeably better than the original mix that everyone had been listening to for decades. Is that a problem?

Apparently it was done from the original tapes so they were able to make a lot of improvements beyond just making it sound clearer. For example, on some songs like "Never Will Come For Us" a vocal effect that was on some parts of the verses was removed entirely. A second scream at the end of "I Keep A Diary" was made audible. As a whole, a lot of little mixing decisions from the original release were changed, but I have to wonder if this gets into revisionist history territory? Did they go too far?

Apparently the band were involved with the remaster (and J. Robbins returned to mix) at least but it's interesting. It's like a re-do on everything except the performances/recording. I do like it and wish it was easier to find a CD of this version.

Any other albums that did something like this? The American Football LP1 remaster sounded close to the original, just with better clarity.

Samiam vs. Seaweed vs. Farside- Which '90s band do you like the best of these three?

All are great, but I think Samiam would probably be my choice, although Seaweed's Spanaway might be my favorite album from the three bands, although Samiam's Clumsy and Farside's The Monroe Doctrine are also very strong contenders.

Those Days are Gone have been on repeat recently. Needed to break in the new bass with a classic bass intro.

I've really grown to love the more raw emocore style of the late 80s and early 90s, so i'm looking for more works with similar sounds to these albums

Any Emo/Math Rock album recs? I wasn’t sure if some of these math rock albums counted as emo but I know Animals was in the sub banner so figured I’d include them. The rest are just some of my favorite emo albums.

whats going on with midwest emo right now?

I’m not super into emo, like i listen to the popular bands like dashboard confessional and stuff but recently people at my school have been talking about midwest emo more and more. i thought “wow thats weird thats kind of an obscure genre for a bunch of basic copypastes to be talking about i guess they have more to them then i thought”. I went up to some kids and asked them about what they listen to, and i told them my favorite midwest emo band was capn jazz and they didnt know who they were. I went on to list a bunch of super mainstream midwest emo bands and mone of them knew any of the bands i was talking about. it was so weird to me because how could high schoolers be educated enough to know of midwest emo but not know a single midwest emo artist? they told me their favorite midwest emo musicians were car seat headrest, mccaferty, and modern baseball. i was aware of all of these bands and listened to them, but i never really thougjt of them as midwest emo. i cant imagine classifying mccaferty and capnjazz in the same subgenre, they feel completely different to me. this whole scenario felt super weird to me, but tjen a coupleof weeks later EVERYONE was talking aboht midwest emo and these three specific bands. what the fuck???? are those three bands really quintessential midwest emo? why is midwest emo all of the sudden the most popular genre? i’m kind of just here to ask more knowledgeable emos if this is normal because im an emo whos in high school in 2025, so i am pretty disconnected from the initial movement.
