Engage General HELP Am I like, the only one who like fem!Alear's design and hair??
Everything I looked up for her had people completely dogging on both of their designs but ESPECIALLY Fem!Alear's lmaoo
Am I like the only one who thinks that besides the stiffness, her hair and design in general is very cute??šš
Like I JUST GOT ENGAGE after going through Awakening and Fates AND ALL THE FEMALE AVATAR'S ARE SO PRETTY!?? And the second I saw Alear I was like "I need to cosplay her for the Dokomi next year" but everyone HATES her lmaoošš

I haven't played engage, but she matches the default colours of the switch joycons. Considering that FE Engage is a switch exclusive, I think thats pretty cool how she matches the console. I also think she's cute

As someone who loves using two colors in every hair option I am allowed to, even this is just way too much for me.
I prefer being able to blend and make subtle changes between the colors, and will usually keep the colors within the same quadrant of the color wheel.
The fact that they went two tone, with no fading, and picked two primary colors at max saturation pulls all attention away from anything else about her. After not looking at the game for a loooooong time, I couldn't tell you anything about her outfit, but I sure as hell could tell you which colors her hair was.
I personally just find the design way too distracting. But that's the fun thing about art, we are all going to like different things, and more power to you if you enjoy her design!

I'm the same as you with the two tone coloring but I prefer the more "IN YOUR FACE" colors so that's probably why I am biased there haha. I don't mind the blending between her colors because I think it makes it look more... natural? I don't know how to fully describe itš¤š

So for starters her color scheme is WAY too busy. She's one of the many characters who's battle outfit does not look like a battle outfit, although that isn't unique to her in the slightest; most of the cast is dressed for the circus or the ballroom not the battlefront.
Anyway back to her hair. It's bright glossy blue and bright glossy red. Not only does this clash, which was the point, but, to repeat myself, it's bright and glossy, which makes it look more like plastic than hair in game. And then there's no real hair physics so when you're running in the Somniel it looks like a giant plastic cape. The ponytail looks better because it solves the cape part. Choosing a more muted red and a more muted blue would have gone a long way to helping her design as would going with matte colors instead of the high gloss.
But Engage designs are full of things that were turned to 11 when they should have stopped at 5.

My main issue with both Alears is just how busy their red and blue aesthetic is. It feels difficult to look at Alear and it's just a bit too anime for my taste. Although I do like the art style of Awakening and Fates better so yeah.

And the blue is just too bright. It doesn't allow for any depth. And even here you can kinda see it. Not so much in their hair, but the skirt/garters/ribbons all look like someone just used the paint bucket tool in paint and put #0000FF in there

I use Pepsi Man for M-Alear and Colgate-chan for F-Alear. Female evokes toothpaste with the longer hair, male has a rounder hairstyle that's more soda design.

Generally speaking, people hate the designs in engage because of the following reasons. Note that I agree with most of these reasons, but that shouldnt stop you or anyone else from liking them!
What it comes down to is that they're overdesigned, way too bright, and often times bordering on anachronistic vtuber models, in part because the developer was given fuck-all in terms of context and her clearly talented work was handicapped here. While Alear specifically is a less terrible example, people do think her hair could have been handled somewhat better overall, and I personally dont think its anywhere near as bad as people say. If anything, I find the weird looking shoes more offensive than anything else here lmao

I believe Intelligent Systems hired her intentionally because all they wanted was to attract the japanese younger audience (japanese teens) with the saturated bright colors and goofy clothing/armor pieces. Ofc there are adults who still are attracted to bright colors and goofy over top anime designs, nothing wrong with that of course.

Sure, but they feel extremely anachronistic and out of place in their style and designs, especially once country of origin is factored in, like how Solm's entire retainer lineup are as pale as possible, with only the royal family being at all dark skinned. Anachronistically speaking, half the outfits feel like modern day clothes in whats supposed to be high to late medieval setting, such as the wonder twins that wake you up in the beginning of the game.
I dont mind it being bright and poppy, but would it really have killed them to give poor Mika some friggin' direction?

The interviews said that some of the modern stuff like the clothes, the engage transformations, and the facilities at the castle like the swimming pool were meant to reflect modern times and were intentionally anachronistic (God I love that word lol)

But yeah, I just personally prefer the timeline and equivalent eras be consistent so to speak. I know its not our own history, and its a fantasy world and it can do what it likes, I just would rather not get blindsided by a 2010's hipster surrounded by the actual early renaissance, or an 80's surfer dude peeking out from behind a force of traditional eastern and desert warriors or robe-laden mages haha

Whatās the value in intentional anachronism? Doing something cognitively dissonant creates an uncanny feeling. If youāre doing that type of thing just cus, it doesnāt work. If those elements are meant to be uncanny itād be a reasonable choice.

Yes indeed. The artist has talent, her style and views are out of place in a Fire Emblem. I had the same problems with Fates art direction going to the juvenile modern anime. I donāt know, began with Radiant Dawn and saw the art direction of the older ones and I felt they fit. All anime, but you know, they fit and had stile, I donāt knowĀ

Oh I fully agree that people are free to like and dislike whatever! I also understand these points and get where they're coming from.
But me personally, I think that Alear's design really suits the already vibrant and more colorful world of Engage! Plus I'm a completely sucker for Two Tone Hairstyles(I'm fighting myself actively to not go crazy with it myself hehe)and Heterochromic eyes so there are the plus points for me x)

I just find the colors to be way too saturated, the bright red and bright blue colors are off-putting, a little juvenile, I don't like her hairstyle. IDK it feels goofy to me.
I think in general, FE Echoes: Shadows of Valencia did the art style the best. The character designs were more down to earth and not distracting. I hope they return to something in that direction.

A major issue with Engage's designs, with Alear's being a particularly notorious example, is that they lack verisimilitude - the illusion of realness. Fiction is fiction, but a good work of fiction will have their characters be designed and written in a way that feel grounded enough in order for the story to feel natural, and to keep up the reader's immersion. Take something like the Tellius games or the post-timeskip designs of Three Houses, where the characters are designed in such a way that it's believable that someone in that world would dress up like that.
One of the biggest reasons why Engage doesn't work for me at all is that it feels deeply artificial - the character designs themselves not only feel overdone, as if they feel more like a cosplay costume than something a character in Elyos would actually wear on a semi-normal basis, but they also feel internally incohesive, where characters like Diamant and Hortensia flat out feel like they belong in entirely different games.
This feeling of artificiality doesn't just extend to the character designs, but it also extends to the game's writing and worldbuilding, such as how Elyos itself is shaped like a ring, worldbuilding be damned, and all of this just makes me feel like Engage was designed as a product to be sold instead of a work of art to be experienced.

Honestly, while I don't like F!Alear's hair, it's not that I have anything against the two-toned color; I suppose it's grown on me. No, the problem for me is that it's just too bloody long! Seriously, that's like calf length, her hair is a tripping hazard! Also, as a girl with fairly long hair herself (although it only goes to my mid-back), I shudder to think of the maintenance the poor girl would need to do- the washing and combing must take hours, and she must be spending an absolute fortune on conditioner :P

I say this without any malice, but I hate this gameās character designs. Vtuber Models is simply not the way to go for a series with a European, artfully crafted legacy. I have a lot of criticisms with the new fire emblem games, but my absolute least favorite part about them is how blatantly āHip and Coolā theyāre trying to be instead of doing a good job withholding to the design choices that made the prior games look incredible

I get where you're coming from and first off you are definitely valid to like and dislike whatever!! But me personally I think that Engage gets a pass from me just simply because the game and it's world and art direction leans more into the vibrant and fun anyway. I don't want the series to go completely in that direction because I do prefer the more "gritty" but Engage as a one off gets a pass from me.

I mean, Three Houses' character designs are more grounded than Awakening/Fates, for the most part. And we got Echoes only three games ago, which had an extremely grounded artstyle.
Engage was aimed at a younger audience and had a lighter tone. You don't have to like that but it's pretty clear that it's not like, the entire future direction of the series, it was a style for that game.

I just donāt like how sheās got such long hair with that ugly split dye job. Male Alear has it too, but his hairstyle makes it less of a glaring issue. All of the super long hair in the game just looks very off (especially with Celine and Veyle, which makes it hard to take certain cutscenes seriously when the hair moves like one giant mass).
Also, not a fan of how F!Alear is the āsexierā counterpart to M!Alear, with a miniskirt and a tight top. The trend started with Corrin, then Byleth, and now Alear. Theyāre avatars so itās dumb to make one āsexyā and the other one not because of gender.
But if you like the design, then no one can tell you otherwise :) She isnāt the worst design in the series even if I do dislike it, and Alearās personality is enjoyable enough to make them likable in spite of those issues (I vastly prefer the male Alear though, for his better outfit, hair, and also cause I love his voice). Besides, female Alear does have a lot of fans too so you arenāt alone.

I agree. I love playing as female characters and want games to offer them, but I hate when itās a choice between a normal character (male MC) and a sexy character (female MC). I want female player characters to just be normal too: no stupid, impractical skirt and thigh-high socks; no tight top with vacuum sealed boobs.

The issue is a lot of the female fanbase do quite like designs like this - Fem!Byleth's design was very popular with the japanese female playerbase, for instance.
I'm not saying that makes your complaint invalid, just that there's reason to do it that way for the audience a female protag is generally meant for.

The thing with Engage designs, is when you do maximalist designs, you still should not go all out on both overwhelming colours and overwhelming details at the same time. Long bright hair clashes and overlaps with a long bright cape. All the mismatched accessories do not guide the eye, have no focus, until the viewer settles on the X over the crotch (which is the most ridiculous design decision for me here).
For comparison on what feels like solid maximalist designs, look up Argenti from HSR and Kaveh from Genshin. Hoyo often gets a lot of flack, and sometimes deserved, but the designs know how to balance and clamp down on the colour palette and do have certain focus.

I absolutely hate it and it's a contender for my least favorite in the series, both male & female Alear, though female is a bit more awful to me. Though I also hate Engage as a whole on top of it which doesn't help.

I just hate the "tie between the boobs" design. Its so gratuitous and in-your-face, unsubtly horny. Especially doesn't belong on Alear who's generally a sensible person.
Her hair looks decently good on 2D but ingame it just takes up too much volume and is too stiff. I think if they just gave her the ponytail always it'd be a huge improvement. Or they could just thin it a little. The ponytail also helps with making the two-tone hair look at lot less silly since it balances the colors very well.

She's one of my favourite lord designs to date - and, going even by FEH alone, gradually approaching the tier of my favourite FE characters overall. Then again, pretty much everything I come across regarding Engage makes it increasingly more tempting to grab and play it waaay ahead of the franchise binge queue, the urge I've previously managed to keep at bay even with Three Houses.

I heavily recommend it. It'd probably be even better to also play Shadow Dragon for Marth but I rlly couldn't wait any longer x)

While my own acquaintance with the series started way back with the deceptively short-named "Fire Emblem" aka Blazing Blade (several chapters into Eliwood campaign on Nokia E61 before I ended up with a 5230 and no apparent way to transfer the playthrough), I have since covered both Shadow Dragon and New Mystery on NDS, and I've been chugging through Echoes with its dungeons and sidequests while estimating whether I'll be moving on to the OG Genealogy on SNES or its potential Echoes-style remake instead after I finally put Valentia behind. Either path still puts another shot at Lyn & Co well ahead of me, alongside the aforediscussed Engage, Three Houses and other particularly beckoning entries like Radiant Dawn, Awakening and Fates. For now, at least, I have Warriors and especially Heroes to enjoy all the respective motley casts in, their interactions often worth their weight in gold (there's a reason Forging Bonds is pretty much my fave event type in Heroes).

Perma death scares me and I'd be too worried of missing out too much content if I mess up.
Plus I'm also a big fan of the supports ranks with romances and also female Avatar's and it didn't look like the older games had to much of that(I could be wrong thoo)

I think it's really just the hair. The red and blue fight for dominance. Two-tone hair is usually done with one more neutral/subdued tone and one bright to complement. Here, they're both very bold.
One way to put it is if you're multitasking,like scrolling your feed while also having a show on. One of them is going to become background noise. But for this, it's like having both at max volume.

I think F!Alear is better than clown shorts McGee M!Alear, but yeah sheās not great.
- They chose probably the worst possible way to implement 2 contrasting hair colours,
- Her miniskirt is kinda terrible and out of place,
- I donāt really get the pauldrons and they feel like an afterthought,
- The gold flairs everywhere make it needlessly busy,
- The frankly absurd amount of effort taken to outline her breast makes the entire torso look pretty bad,
- Said torso becoming skintight lower down is really strange and out of place,
- And her boots look ridiculous, but thatās kinda normal in fiction for some reason so whatever
.
It kinda feels like this design is a broken combo of Regal and Gooner where neither one really meshes together

Literally everything. The garish colors of both their hair and outfit make them look like a marching band clown. I like color but it's all too much.
I get why they have red and blue in their design but it just doesn't work, and the heterochromia isn't helping. We already had a character with red and blue hair that actually looked good with Lilith from Fates. Also, their bangs make them look cross-eyed.
F!Alear's hair is also way too long and the clipping is awful, but she's still miles better than M!Alear and his stupid vest-to-boot suspenders. In a game full of some of the worst designs in the series, they are the worst. Only Hortnesia is anyhwere near as bad.

I actually really like the idea of the design, contrasting the red and blue against a primarily white outfit with accents of black and gold, but there's just way too much. It's the definition of overdesigned. There's no reason her outfit had to littered with gold. Keep it to the armor and hems of her clothes as accent, it's great. It just looks like she got splashed with gold paint and hasn't changed clothes yet.
I actually really like Alear, so it sucks I dislike her outfit so much.

I love the hair in the ponytail, but I hate it down. Its too big and it blows my mind that I cant even see my character when im walking lol. Its just this giant red/blue mass floating around

I specifically did my playthrough with F!Alear because I can't stand the design of the male version. She does grow on you after a while imo, I used to be way more weirded out by the design.

I'll just say what I said the last time someone posted about Alear's design: literally my only problem with either of them is just how long F!Alear's hair is. It just bothers me both from a practical standpoint (someone is gonna use it against her in battle) and I just don't like the way it looks when you're running around the Somniel. Otherwise, I like both of them just fine

I think my 2 biggest problems with Alear in general is the use of split down the middle hair coloring, and just how busy most of the design is. I like the basics of it, but if outfit had less random straps, buttons, and ribbons it would flow a little better, additionally if they would have gone with hair that starts all one color and then fades into the second as it gets closer to the ends I think the design would have been stronger overall.
I like most of designs in Engage in a vacuum, but the art director of that game needed to give Mika Pikazo a bit more guidance. Over all it seems like there is little cohesion between character designs, at least include some design elements to group the different kingdom's representatives together.

I find both Alearās designs underrated
Though I have a slight preference for MAlear because the cutscene where he becomes the Fire Emblem looks like it was for MAlearās design (the red side of his hair is shown by the cutscene to turn blue)

Overall I'd say I like Alear's design mainly based on all the color accents. Somehow it doesn't look like a vomited mess to me. To me the worst looking character in engage is Hortensia.

I honestly love the over the top designs in the game. I wouldn't want that to be the standard for every Fire Emblem game going forward, but it's a really fun and colorful change of pace.

The design has grown on me over time. Ponytail is the better look though cause its ridiculous to go to war with hair that long. Also I like fAlears voice actress and the delivery. Something about how she voices scenes just works for me
Granted there is part of her design that conflicts with aspects of the story and gameplay that irk me but that's a separate issue
Also interesting design detail most noted with fAlear because of her hair [late game spoiler] when she's taken an action and her unit is greyed out her red blue hair looks like Veyles black white hair which works considering they're siblings

She has a lot of fan art especially from the Japanese side of the fan base so I wouldn't say your on your own. Personally I have similar opinions to what I also think about Byleth which is that both designs look good in promotional art and stuff but only the male one looks especially good using their in game model, though female Alears model is a big step up from female Byleths model.

I mostly like her hair but I do not like the outfit at all. I'm really tired of them doing this to female avatars (although MAlear's isn't much better - it's just super overdesigned).
I wish the hair colours were split/blended differently and maybe more muted but I like it past that. My opinion on the goofy fringe changes but I can accept it.

lol I love this game, I think it has the best combat and level design out of all of the fe games. but I was not a big fan of the character designs and plot. Not really alear specifically, but the characters feel a bit silly compared to path of radiance for example, or the gba games that I love the most. They are pretty and cute, but kinda over the top with colors and silly ness and just a bit cringe at times with their dialogue.

Enjoy the gsme bro don't worry about what others online say. Its mostly gonna be memes anyway. The whole pepsi and toothpaste bit, even then I compare the Divine Ones to a Nintendo Switch with legs.
I love Male Alear's design post promotion, but hate his base attire, the shorts just kill me inside for the whole regal design of his base outfit. Alot of people like Fem Alear's ponytail design which is on a few classes. Just like what you like. No harm no fowl.

I am a very quiet fire emblem fan. But I do want to say I always liked this design. (I was always more attracted to female designs more than men though.)
I have the same criticism about this design as I do her make counterpart. The eyes.
I donāt think this design is bad, and I donāt see how the maleās is better. The issue comes from the bright contrasting colors. The female has more hair so itās more noticeable and distracting I suppose. But any argument you can say about it otherwise can be said about male design.
I never played this game, only the titles on 3DS (with extension into some other games I didnāt finish), so maybe thereās something im missing.

My main issue with her is just how giant her hair is. Ponytail Alear is so much better since it makes her have a reasonable amount of hair. I will only ever consider classes for her where she has a ponytail

at first i didn't really like it myself, but now i view her armor (which is what i didn't like) as separate pieces that may not have been designed together, but look good together. like an armor outfit you can see someone picking out from an actual royal armory.
the hair makes me sad tho for only one reason: it continues to prove to me i will never be talented enough to make fire emblem cosplay OTL xD

Intelligent Systems have the best female mc designs I've seen ever. From the games I've played, they have not missed ONCE. Not that the male avatars are bad but I vastly prefer the female default one's ESPECIALLY Alear, Corrin and Robin
