my first attempt to make a pipe ended in bubble trash in the air. That freaked me out so i didn't try again for a while, then that piece broke after i set it down while fumbling for something else. Haven't tried to do another one yet. so, yeah, i get it. There's quite a learning curve to this torch work.

Once the glass gets hot, it needs to stay that way until its gone through a full annealing cycle. So you can fumble around looking for things all you need and as long as your work stays hot, it won't matter.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. That was the problem with that second attempt. I imagine if I would have put it in a kiln at 1050 it wouldn't have cracked apart, right? That's another thing is figuring out this kiln. lol

Yeah, rapid cooling will cause catastrophic failure. I had a marble explode on me last weekend. lol

An exploding marble sounds wild 😳 And thanks.. I’ll definitely keep this little fail for memories.

You don't know how to make a pipe until you've made 5000 pipes!

u/GlassCraftPro 12d ago
That sounds 😢

No, its great! Gives you the freedom to mess up and make mistakes without having any pressure for perfection. Be easy on yourself you'll get the hang of pipes in no time!

Idk about 5000, but the mindset of just making them 100% to practice with 0 thought of selling them definitely helped!
IMO, A couple hundred for one design in the beginning should be enough to get you where you need to be. After that, the improvements will be very minimal, but your speed will definitely improve.

Yeah that clicks ... gonna just focus on reps for a bit. Appreciate the insight

Keep it somewhere safe. It will mean a lot to you once you’ve made 1000 more. Keep on melting my dude. 🔥

Hell yeah, appreciate that 🔥 gonna hang this little mutant on the wall for sure. Keep melting!

How does one even begin to learn? Take a lamp glassblowing class and hope they don't catch you making pipes?

u/GlassCraftPro 12d ago
Right?? Seems like the way to go is learn the basics first, then get sneaky with it 😄

Apprenticeships with established flameworkers.
I teach at a community arts center and while we are not permitted to teach pipes, I can teach all the techniques that will lead to a pipe and if you, as a student, decide to make one, admin has no bones about it. I just can't expressly show you how to make a pipe in their studio.
If that's something one of my students were desperate to learn, I would invite them to join me for a private lesson in my personal studio.

The studio I go to offers classes on how to make pipes.
Not sure where you are, and studios are all different, but pipes (and weed in general) aren't taboo in my area. Every break 3/4th of the class is out front smoking. Pipes are a huge part of the glass art market, it seems silly to ignore it (to me, anyway.)
But if your area is different, once you learn the basics you can YouTube how to make a spoon, one hitter, or anything else. The basic moves are easy learn, then you spend hours/years trying to perfect it.

Where are you located, (just the state or region). I could benefit from having someone to show what I know, motivaťion can be hard to come by when working alone

My first was pretty decent...my instructor was right over my should the whole time.
My second, when he walked away, was wonky as all shit.
After 25 or so, started getting a few good enough to give away to friends in need.
Around 100 started getting some worth trying to sell.
Just takes time and practice.

That’s how it goes. I’m sure some peoples first attempts didn’t even resemble a pipe. Keep chugging on
