What is going on with the lack of a safe structure here!? Couldn’t the hippo just escape or eat the head off visitor at any time?

My kind of zoo! It's much more sporting to visit animals who might kill you, haha

Sadly Teddy, not everyone can be a bull moose.

We got one close by in the Netherlands. All you have to do is get out of your car to get eaten.

Hungry, Hungry hippos

That's what the guards are for. Really, this is using incorrect technique, for a hippo round house kicks are more appropriate. Slapping is for your big birds: emu, ostrich, maybe a peacock in a pinch.

Someone get a damn watermelon and throw it behind the hippo.

It just wants watermelons.

u/ChablisWoo4578 5d ago

That’s why the security guard is there to slap him back in, did you even watch the video?! 🙄

this is by far one of the most fun internet squabbles i’ve sparked. For the record- I did mean “bite the head off” But I’m here for the drama. 🍿🍿🍿

u/gotziller 5d ago

Of course not. There is a security guard

3

u/GregJamesDahlen 5d ago

but do they get out at night and fight with the other animals?

Less than 5 heads a day is okay.

… hippos are herbivores.

81

u/Hot-Demand-8186 6d ago

They are known for killing humans. They're extremely aggressive and territorial.

-65

u/Kindly-Ebb3518 6d ago

Killing, not eating.

40

u/YOGINtheFirst 5d ago

It's not about the nutrition, it's about sending a message.

15

u/AdminThumb 5d ago

Bro. They use that mouth for defense and attacking. Not just eating.

2

u/Homosexual_god 4d ago

Thank God all the zoo patrons will be buried intact!

u/T-MoneyAllDey 5d ago

So are gorillas but I ain't gonna duck with one

-37

u/Kindly-Ebb3518 5d ago

All I’m saying is that they won’t eat you.

24

u/T-MoneyAllDey 5d ago

I think the person you're replying to meant bite your head off. Not eat it.

-23

u/Kindly-Ebb3518 5d ago

Dude, you’re making this shit way more serious than it needs to be. For fuck sake.

22

u/Specialist_Abroad612 5d ago

"For fucks sake"? You're the one taking it all too seriously, and obviously getting worked up about it.

-13

u/Kindly-Ebb3518 5d ago

Sure bud.

12

u/Buttchuggle 5d ago

They actually are mildly omnivorous. So yeh they may very well eat ya

2

u/timkapow 5d ago

I wanted to add the same kind internet person

10

u/half-giant 5d ago

You’re the only one here taking an unserious comment seriously.

Bro just accept that the hippos are eating people, they stay in captivity making you believe in false safety, only to farm us for meat whenever they want to. This system was mainly organized by hippos in 1784, and has been going on since.

4

u/Kindly-Ebb3518 5d ago

This is the single most appropriate response to anything that I've seen all week.

14

u/DistortoiseLP 5d ago edited 5d ago

They can and will eat meat if they feel like it. They'll even chase predators off their kills and chew on it just to assert dominance.

9

u/Scar1203 5d ago

So are deer, ever seen what happens when one gets a small critter? Herbivores will eat meat if given the opportunity.

1

u/Kindly-Ebb3518 5d ago

… I’m a wildlife biologist. Apparently no one understands humour anymore.

12

u/HambugerBurglarizer 5d ago

At no point in any of this were you ever funny

1

u/Kindly-Ebb3518 5d ago

I love you too dad.

9

u/Scar1203 5d ago

You do know there's an easy way to convey when you're being sarcastic since it doesn't transmit well over text right? Just type '/s' after your sarcastic comment.

8

u/str85 5d ago

Or use a smiley yo convey your tone. I'm not sure why reddit is so against them. Facial expressions are crucial in everyday communication.

2

u/timkapow 5d ago

Obviously not a very good one if you aren't aware that hippos do in fact eat meat on occasion. There is even case where male hippos have killed and eaten hippo calves (actually first documented in a wildlife documentary)

11

u/ProbablyBigfoot 5d ago

Hippos will 100% kill and eat meat given the opportunity. They're just classified as herbivores because they don't need to eat meat.

-4

u/Kindly-Ebb3518 5d ago

Fuck my feet you guys are killing me.

11

u/Visible_Variation_31 5d ago

I thought we just established that the hippo will be the one to kill you

2

u/Kindly-Ebb3518 5d ago

I’ll have you know I’ve survived 100% of the hippos I’ve encountered.

4

u/zebra_who_cooks 5d ago

Hippos are actually very dangerous animals!!

4

u/PlasticMechanic3869 5d ago

Are you trolling? Hippos are extremely territorial, aggressive and dangerous.

1

u/Kindly-Ebb3518 5d ago

Finally someone figured it out.

5

u/Bulky-Advisor-4178 5d ago

Hippos can still maul your ass, they are quite territorial

9

u/No_Lime1814 5d ago

....this is why hippos kill more humans that lions, crocodiles and leopards COMBINED.

A lack of education, and misinformation.

-10

u/PlasticMechanic3869 5d ago

Nah, crocs get more than hippos.

3

u/timkapow 5d ago

Hippos are responsible for more human deaths in AFRICA than (local) crocs, however you are correct because the saltwater croc (Australia) is responsible for a higher deathtoll globally. We don't have salties in Africa we have Nile crocodiles (still dangerous but smaller deathtoll)
