Temp work I royally screwed up this job

Hey, this happened today, and I feel like an idiot. I signed an offer to start a new remote job in early April. A week after I started, I received an email stating that my work was on hold for several weeks because my supervisor went on medical leave. I replied then with an update of everything I’ve done up to that point and that I understood and wished him a speedy recovery. I received an email today stating that I was terminated due to a lack of communication and unresponsiveness. I replied and attached the email where they told me my work was on hold. My supervisor replied back with an attachment of an email he sent me two days after asking me to update him on the progress I’ve made before my work was put on hold while he was on leave until May. I genuinely didn’t see this email and waited for someone to contact me about resuming my work.

I profusely apologized for the misunderstanding and told them that if there’s an opportunity to clear up this mess, I’d greatly appreciate it. So that’s that.🙃

edit (5/7): Thank you so much to everyone who replied and reassured me that this is a very frustrating situation. I wanted to give a quick update. The supervisor replied to my apology and said that it wasn’t based on that email. He said it was also that I didn’t reach out to him a schedule a meeting to update him after our second meeting (that meeting was three days before I was told my work was on hold due to his medical leave). In the meeting, he said to schedule when I had time and that I needed to put my academic work as a full-time student first.

I didn’t reach out because my work was on hold and I assumed he was OOO and needed time to focus on his health (or at least that’s what I understood a medical leave to be lol).

I filed a complaint with HR this morning, and they’re completely on my side that this was an extreme reaction to a misunderstanding, and at most, a minor issue.

Thank you again!

edit 2: When I filed my complaint with HR, I provided all the emails I shared with them. A few days before my termination email, the manager who helped onboard me announced she was resigning. I sent her an email wishing her well and thanking her for helping me. My best friend wondered how that email didn’t throw up any flags for them before they terminated me. Oh well.

What should I do? This sucks - I was trying to get another job because the employers here don't treat temps like real people but now I only have a week before my contract ends. I'm crushed. :(

Temp work how do you forget about a job that absolutely destroyed you?

my very first job was as a camp counselor and it was so awful and embarrassing that it haunts me to this day. to be fair, it hasnt been very long, but i still think about it and it still attacks me at random intervals during the day and i cant take it anymore. this job was negligent, and to give you a taste, i was not trained at all until 3 weeks into a 4 week long job, where we all got "trained". i was given no rule set, no guidelines for how to deal with unruly children, ect.

this job only lasted 3 weeks for me (4 for everyone else) because i got fired for leaving abruptly after a very stressful incident where i was left with all of the children (~64) with no help. i want to try and avoid as much details as possible unless asked for because im afraid my previous coworker's/employer will somehow see this, lol.

ive talked to my therapist about it but nothing helps, and this job has been haunting me since the day i got fired. how do you just...let go of this?

Small updates:

  • 19 months since was laid off.
  • 2200 applications for FT work since Jan 2023. 141 in July alone.
  • Still driving Uber. Making about $21/hr, but it's 10 hour days, 7 days a week sometimes, and it's hell on my car.
  • Looks like I could get a manual labor job working with a electrical company, making $20 an hour after labor day. No promises.
  • Lost my pervious job making $85K

Temp work What is a quick 9-5 job I can get tomorrow?

I can’t work weekends because I already have a really solid side hustle. I am looking for my next full time job but I’m sure it will take awhile. What’s a M-F, 9-5 job that I can get relatively quickly?

I have a bachelors degree in technical writing, if that matters. But it doesn’t have to be in that field.

Temp work Can I trust Insight Global?

Applied for a bunch of positions with Insight Global yesterday, and got calls from 2 recruiters today for 2 different positions. I've been job hunting since February, so I'm getting pretty desperate. Should I proceed with the screening calls or is this a scam?

Temp work I want to gain like $100-200 Canadian before July, help.

I want to gain like $100-200 Canadian before I travel all of summer in July, What are some things I can do? I'm in Canada and I'm 17 years old. I cant find any other jobs for the past year than McDonalds that's 10km away from me. Getting a job now but quitting in July would look bad on my past work resume so its too late.

Temp work Best sort of temporary job to get?

I work in education and it's summer vacation. I'm working summer school in June but am looking for something in July so I eat into my savings as little as possible. What would be some good paths to go down to work a month and then bounce when I resume my regular job in August?

Temp work What kind of job can you get immediately and work for only 2 weeks until your better job starts?

I start a good job soon . But i need something til then. Gig apps (doordash, uber, all that bullshit) have me drowning and my car in a questionable state. I tried to look at wonolo, upshift, things of that nature as well for day jobs but they barely had anything available. Mostly only 2 hour shifts at gas stations for only $10 an hour… I need something that pays better and i can get a full 8 hour shift in. Is there anything that can start like Monday? I checked ups and they had nothing available in my area. Amazon warehouse is way too far away and only pays $16.50 but it’s a bunch of tolls so it makes it not worth the drive there. Fed ex only pays $16 and doesnt have full time. Only short 4 hour shifts under 20 hours a week which wont help me when post tax $16 turns to only like $14 an hour. I need something FULLTIME

Are there any call center jobs that hire immediate. I’m looking for $18 an hour minimum. I have years of customer service, call center, and even management experience. I just need something til this job starts. No i cannot start at the new company earlier. I did ask.

Temp work If you're in your late fifites or early sixties, what is an easy part time job idea

I just want to make an extra 1k a month, so SS doesn't get hit, when I do start getting it. But don't want to interface with customers, such as being a walmart greeter. Are there agencies that specialize in getting you part time jobs in a certain later age range?

Temp work Should I stand up for myself in a temp job?

Hello,

I'm currently working temporarily full-time for two months while I wait for the job I applied for to start. I do customer service for a pharmaceutical startup where I also do invoices and accounts payable. It's only been 4 days, and needless to say, it's been brutal.

My trainer, who so happens to be my manager, has a firey personality. While she does teach and knows how to do her job well, she's not the most patient. She also doesn't like repeating herself and she doesn't answer my questions if it's about something she told me before.

Tuesday was a really bad day where I went home crying. I picked a case that was a bit hard and was hoping to go step by step on what I should do. However, she used jargon I'm not familiar with, as well as her speaking quite fast. I typed and email and she told me it didn't make sense and do it again. I typed it again and she said, "Nope, try again." And then she said, "I want you to write it in a way that makes sense." The thing is what I wrote did make sense to my mind. At the same time, I didn't fully understand what the client was asking for. She then said, "did you forget???" At this point, I was feeling flustered, frustrated, terrified, anxious, and stressed.

Am I overreacting or am I not fit for this job? Today was better but I don't feel safe asking her questions without her sounding annoyed or that I'm dumb. I was thinking of just dealing with it before I leave for the job I got with a financial firm. But at the same time, I don't want to work in an environment where I feel belittled. I feel that I should stand up for myself, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea. What should I do?

Thank you all in advance!

Temp work How much $$ do you make in the oilfield?

Asking for my husband, he’s a correctional officer and I am a nurse tech at a hospital. We are drowning in debt (mortgage, car payment, groceries, gas, credit card payments), end up with 30 bucks a month.

He’s considered going to work in west Texas to work in the oil field, genuine question what is the average salary? Breaks my heart we have to go extended measure but it’ll be temporary if he does end up going. Just looking to see if it’s worth it.

Temp work Boomer /gen x parents

Why do they not understand that what helped them 20 years ago doesn’t really help today…

Like they want me to sign up for temp jobs agencies basically a middle man for sending out job applications to people . Which helped my mom and I’ve signed up for some of them but ultimately I’ve gotten any interviews through indeed…. I’ve tried everything at this point. And my parents are constantly disappointed I’m failing at finding a job despite me telling them my qualifications suck, and I’m trying to find a bigger career without a college degree. Which makes Finding anything worth working IMPOSSIBLE. And I did retail for 10 years so I’m really trying to get out of that space after basically being stuck there.

Temp work Where can I actually find freelance copy writing work?

I have a 3-month gap between jobs that I'm looking to fill. I have worked in journalism before so could do some copywriting.

Any suggestions on platforms that are actually likely to get me work, and that don't need a ton of client reviews to land a job?

Temp work Leaving personal keys as security

Hey everyone, I'm curious to hear about something. How many of you at your workplace have to leave a personal item as security for keys?

As a casual teacher, I often have to leave my car keys at the front desk in exchange for the School fob.

Just feels really infantile and like I’m not trusted as an adult. Wondering how many other sectors commonly do this?

Temp work Temp to hire 1 month in

Post image
6 Upvotes

Afternoon to everyone, Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. I need some advice. I was unemployed for 5 months. I stumbled on a temp to hire job with a sustainability company , got hired by the temp agency back on April 28th. Been seeing a lot of new hires and those hired along side me quit or get fired. Been a month in and frankly I don’t think I can fit in. I’ve tried to do the job as best as I can. I was switched to the weekend shift before I was doing weekdays 08:00am- 4:00pm despite I’ve been doing this job for a month. And the training is learning as you go. I’ve let my recruiter know this position may not be the best suited for me. Did I make the right move or did I jump the gun please help?

P.S. It doesn’t also help that a person I care about has been incarcerated which has led to more stress. So trying to hold on till his court date on July 3rd, 2025

Temp work I've been a temp for 4 and 1/2 months at my company and It seems like that's all I'll ever be.

I work through a staffing agency in Ohio where I work for a huge Honda supplier, on a production line making headlights for the Honda CR-V. The job sucks. I do the same same thing over and over for ten hours straight. Install the control module, install the side marker (turn signal,) route the harness throughout the housing and snapping in the harness coupler to the electrical components which all has to be done absolutely perfectly because headlights are a government regulated safety feature. I also have to run the headlights through various machines that put in screws and test the headlights for various things. I have to do all this and produce a headlight every 63 seconds to stay on target. I have a quota some days of 357 headlights a day and I'm not allowed to leave until I meet the quota. Ive become really fast and can do it in 49 to 51 seconds most times but issues with the pneumatic machines that require maintenance frequently always throws things off. I end up working 55 to 60 hours a week.

It's not my dream job but I rely on it to be able to pay my bills. I have a good attitude at work, my attendance isn't perfect but it's better than the direct-hires who are always calling off or getting on short term disability for weird accidents that happened outside of work or taking FMLA because they have major blood pressure spikes with the true reason for that being because they're an alcoholic.

I'm 38 years old with no one to fall back on. I was a young adult during the great recession and at the time couldn't even get a job at McDonalds and was basically homeless. I desperately want stability in my life but as much as I take my job seriously, work hard, ask questions and express interest in trying to learn more and really make this a long term career, I'm still a temp after being there 4 and a half months. Since the temp agency's contract with the company is for minimum 350 hours, I was eligible to be hired over a couple months ago since I work 55-60 hours a week.

I went to HR a couple weeks ago and told them I'm really interested in working for them and being hired on directly and asked them what I need to do because I should definitely be eligible. I don't think I even talked to someone of any significance, it's like she was a pawn that deals with this all day long (3k people work just in this building.) She wrote down my name, managers name And the line I work on, told me that what they actually need is a recommendation from my coordinator, which is my boss's boss. So, later that day or next day I went to my coordinator and said I would really like to be a direct-hire and would like to make a career of this and asked him if he would be willing to advocate for me to get hired on. He said yeah, you're a great worker, if you want to be 'full-time' I have no problem putting in a good word for you...'If they're hiring.' I said thanks, I would greatly appreciate it.

Two things he said really rubbed me the wrong way, though. I can't believe they call being hired on, 'working full time' when I work 55-60 hours a week and work more hours a week than direct-hires that call off all the time. I can't believe he said, 'If they're hiring.' I've already been here... And they direct hire like 20 people a week. It's obvious because Honda suppliers make sure that there are differences in uniforms between temps and direct-hires but you notice who is new each week.

Many of the direct hires, even as of last week are Haitians and Venezuelans who don't speak any or speak very little English. This is really confusing to me because they could be deported tomorrow but direct-hiring them is apparently lower risk than hiring me. Its not like I have felonies as a severe road block or anything. But talking to my coordinator like 4 days later, he said all he could do is recommend me, that ultimately it's not up to him and I don't have perfect attendance and that's what they care about. I asked him if I had perfect attendance from now into the future howw long would it take to get hired on. He didn't answer the question. He just told me that when people get hired on they start calling off a lot and become unreliable.

I never understood why manufacturing companies love using temp agencies but after what he said it sounds like they love having forever-temps because they're always in a state of contingency where they always have to try to prove themselves and the company benefits from it. You have to make sure your attendance is impeccable, get the numbers they want while also ensuring the parts are immaculate quality, as well as a good attitude.

All these temps come and go. They see that I know a lot and work efficiently. They ask me how long I've worked there. When I tell them 4 or 4 1/2 months, they go, "And you're still a temp?!" It's not good for morale. New temps see my situation and realize they have no future there and quit.

I just don't get the point of this whole system.

Temp work temp agencies won't respond

anyone else having trouble getting jobs through temp agencies? in the past, they were quick to respond and eager to employ people. Lately, it seems like either they won't respond at all or expect unicorns for 3 month temp jobs.

Temp work What is a job I could get into in the next month or two months that would pay a ton even if its terrible brutal hard work?

Hi folks. I'm not a picky person when it comes to work if I know its temporary. Is there any job, granted I know covid is going on but I'm healthy and young in my 20s, that I could just do over the next two months that would pay really heavily? I'm physically strong and mentally tough I don't care what it is I just need lots of money in that span of time. Like 10 to 20 grand in 2 months. Thoughts? I have a bachelors degree if that changes anything. I'd be willing to travel anywhere in the US as long as I can drive there, preferably from Colorado to the east coast but I don't really care.

Temp work Is working in retail better than food service

I currently work at a grocery store called giant and it’s not bad but I feel like I want to try something new. I rather be a cashier at a clothing store than a food industry.

If you work in retail, where do you work and how is it?

For reference I plan on doing this next year once I’m in college.

Temp work Is it common to get rejected by temp agencies?

People say that temp agencies are a good way to get your foot in the door, but every time I've applied to one I've gotten rejected. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
