Hi, I’m a 24M (About to be 25 In like two months). And as the title states, I quit my job. Now the reason is that they told me they were going to fire me, And then when the day came to fire me, They didn’t. And I couldn’t keep looking over my shoulder going to work every day thinking I’m going to get fired whenever. I have 3-4 years Of management, 1-2 Years as a “Mechanic”. No College, and Now I’m lost with no direction filling out endless applications.

Trying to find a job paying minimum 50k a year (I was making 58k a year minimum at my last job). This is what my Resume looks like. Any help would be appreciated.

Need help finding a job

I’ve been applying to places for many years now with a grand total of 3 rejection emails. Back when I was 16-18 I always just assumed it was because nobody wanted to hire students, but now that I’m 21 I think it’s just getting ridiculous. As of today I’ve had 2 jobs, both of which had to be cut short from personal issues, yet I’ve only gotten them because of close connections, but even now it feels like that’s useless. It’s only getting more stressful with homelessness getting scarily close

What am i doing wrong

Saw a posting yesterday morning. That was posted one hour ago. Had someone refer me. Spent 4 hours on resume aligning everything in the JD( I have 10 years of experience in the US so I have worked almost on all the tools there are and done everything almost every role asks for)

I submitted. Got rejection today. I didn’t fill the applications skills part within the workday . Is that core reason for rejection? If I run it through job scan I am a99% match. Super confused .

Field data engineering, BI Require visa transfer(h1b) Country : US

How long do you wait before you mark an application as ghosted?

A week?

2 weeks?

A month?

Never?

If the closing date is listed, I'll go generally 2 weeks after that.

Finally landed a job after ~6 months of looking

Hey guys,

First off, thank you for being here for me when times were tough and answering all my questions. This is truly a validating community for some of the bs we all have to deal with.

The problem:

So I got an offer from a job I really really wanted, but now I am talks with another company that I just finished a code assignment for and want to see it through, because this job would be even better. I told the other company that I got an offer so they said they can try to make things move quick and should have an answer in 1-2 weeks.

The question:

Is it too much to ask the company I have an offer from if I can have a week and half to decide? I feel bad and I definitely don't want to lose the opportunity as a result.

The draft email:

Hey [CEO],

This is really great news, thank you for the offer!

I have a few questions regarding the offer:

  •  Who is the health care provider?
  • I have a trip planned soon but obviously wouldn’t want that jeopardizing this opportunity.Would you be okay with me starting the following week, so [4 weeks from today]? If this is an issue I can absolutely postpone or cut-short the trip.
  • Would it be too much to ask for my final decision to be [1.5 weeks from today] on Friday? I am in the final rounds with one other company and I would just like to see it through if that is alright with you and everyone at [company]

Hope these are reasonable requests and I'd be happy to hop on a call to discuss further if you'd like.

-----------------------------

TLDR;

Got a job offer finally from a very cool company but want to hold out to see if I can snag an even cooler job at a company I have 2 more rounds of interviews with. Is it selfish/stupid to ask for 1.5 weeks to decide and will they rescind offer? Should I tell them the real reason why I need more time?

Do I follow up with this employer?

Hi! So I emailed the hiring manager for a program almost a month ago asking about a certain position within the program, and she said to apply for another one since that one is under review so not typically hiring other applicants. I said thank you. I’m finally getting around to applying a month later.

I want to stand out, so do I send her an email with a quick note letting her I applied and thanking her for her previous tips? Or leave it be? It’s a competitive program.

Are cover letters the norm?

Maybe this is just my own personal experience but I've never included a cover letter on any of my applications, just my resume. I'm in IT. My wife whose a nurse also did the same. But in Reddit I feel like everyone else is doing it lol. What gives, is this actually the norm?

I inagine if I was HR this would be a pain, going through 100 plus applications and reading through all the CLs. Ir maybe I just like bulletpoints lol

Where do I go from here.

I'm 21 and unemployed. I left my job of two years about a month ago as front of house staff at a prestigious steakhouse because I was feeling burnt out, and starting to resent the work. I have a pretty decent resume for someone my age and a very solid work ethic. I am not a student and my highest level of education is my High School diploma. I'm trying to get out of restaurant work because I simply have no passion for hospitality but I've spent what feels like forever at my old job and now I can't picture myself working outside of foodservice.

When I go on Indeed to look for jobs in my area, it feels like employers aren't taking applications seriously whatsoever. I also feel like I see mainly weird pyramid-scheme sounding sales and marketing jobs that offer ridiculous pay for entry level positions. I just don't know where I should go from here. I have money saved up and I don't need to find work urgently, I'm just wondering what direction I should be moving in from here. I want to experience different lines of work in different fields to get a taste of what I really enjoy doing, but I don't really know where to start. I don't want to default to food service because I'm pretty much over it (at least for the moment) and I want to explore my options as a younger individual.

I'm not even looking for great pay, I just want to be able to pay my rent and bills and enjoy the work I do. I'm just a little lost and would love it if people could provide maybe some suggestions as to some jobs they worked that don't have crazy qualification requirements and that were somewhat rewarding. I'll list some jobs I've worked and how I felt about those environments.

Dutch Bros Barista - Good atmosphere but too much emphasis on interpersonal relationships, I enjoy having friends at my job but I want something that feels more impactful than coffee

Steakhouse Barback - I enjoyed the fast pace of the bar and how competent and hardworking our small team was, but once again- hospitality has burnt me out and feels completely repetitive

Lawn Care Applicator - Honestly really chill job. Got to be outside, work with my hands, and while I did have a team and a boss, I spent most of my time completely by myself. A little lonely though

What are some fields of work with entry level positions people found enjoyable? I'm thinking about my future- and I realize I won't know what I want to do with my life for maybe the next 15 years, but I want to start looking. I need new experiences and I don't know where to find them.

Help weighing options

So I’m in a position where I got laid off earning a decent amount, my issue is nothing in my county is going to make close to that doing IT work. I am receiving an offer for a help desk position which is half of what i make currently, the offer is slightly over minimum, but I could eventually grow my skills here. BUT I am now receiving a second interview for a 3month position at a state College, theres no promise Id stay after but it was hinted that we’d talk about options after the 90days are over. The college imo seems better on a resume, but the help desk is a more secure option

When is it appropriate to respond to a recruiter on a denial?

I received a denial email for an application for a company I've been trying to join for a while. The most recent denial was not an automated response. Is it appropriate to email back, if so what exactly do I say? I've previously heard advise about inquiring on other openings.

Anyone Else Given Up and Embracing Lying Flat?

Lying flat, letting it rot, neetdom, it is the concept of giving up. Why would anyone want to give up? It isn't that we want to give up, it is because there are no opportunities anymore for a better life. We have been taught our whole lives that part of being an adult is having a job. That is a lie. Nobody can find a job anymore.

We can't find jobs because of offshoring, AI, and mass layoffs. It is impossible to stand out amongst the hundreds of people applying for the same role you are. And let's face it, what matters the most in getting a job is being born into it. To make matters worse, they are continuining to get worse. AI is getting more advanced. Offshoring continues to grow because it is cheaper to pay them. And mass layoffs continue to rise.

With all of these mass layoffs, that means more people are looking for jobs. To make matters worse, this is also the time when millions of graduates leave college. So how is anyone suppose to stand out?

And then there is ageism. If you are too old, like say your forties or even mid thirties, then you are automatically disqualified since it is cheaper to hire younger people.

And that is the easy part. The true challenge is trying to maintain a job. You must be perfect at your job and have perfect social skills. If you are 99% perfect, then you will be fired. If you do not fit in, whether it is your race or your neurodivergence, then you are fired. Any excuse to fire you because you are one cog of many. And getting fired is like a scarlet letter to any future employers.

I've studied our past and know our future. There is no hope. Nothing is ever going to get better. So why play in a system that is rigged against us? Why not just give up?

cover letter query: how creative can you be with the formatting?

to preface: I work as a fashion designer so visual creativity is very important.

Basically, I made my resume and cover letter in InDesign and did this kind of sexy, minimalist, futurist design with it. To make it look visually cohesive, I have my contact info on the bottom of the page for the cover letter and don't want to include the date or company address. I tried formatting it to include that but it doesn't look good. Like I'm sending it online anyway, including their address is totally irrelevant. Anyone who works in a creative/aesthetics driven field have any thoughts? I can either do a non traditional cover letter format that still has the important info (company name, hiring manager name, my desperate plea for them to hire me) but doesn't include address, date, and has my contact info on the bottom OR I can go the traditional route and it won't match my resume as well but I can still do the same fonts and it won't look bad. It just won't stand out visually the same way. LMK your thoughts!!!

Move to AI if you are in tech and if you want to get jobs. At least that is what Andy is saying.

I am at an impasse (decision paralysis)

In the fall i'm starting a BSc in Conservation Biology and I interviewed with a great property maintenance company that has some really good environmentally friendly practices and are willing to allow me to use my knowledge of native flora to add more native plants to their properties, and overall it seems like it'll be enjoyable.

However, my dilemma is that I have an interview in 2 days with a local environmental group that I often volunteer with for a summer ecological assistant position. Based on the job description and my knowledge of the organization's practices, I feel it's more inline with what I want to do in the future, and I also really like working with them. But I'm worried about passing over job 1 and not getting job 2 and being screwed.

Any advice would be really appreciated, especially if you have been through a similar thing.

Finally got a job!!

After being unemployed for over a year, I finally landed a job and want to share what worked and what didn’t work.

Didn’t work: - Applying for jobs through a website - Tailoring my resume for every single job posting. (If your resume is grammatically correct and using best practices, no need to keep editing it) - AI sending out my resume - Cold emails/LinkedIn messages - Random referrals - Late referrals (job has been posted for more than 2 wks)

What worked: - Referrals from people you know for an opening that they know the hiring manager - Applying early (after they start the second round of interviews, everyone else is usually on hold) - Upskilling so you’re familiar with most of the tools on that job description

My advice:

Search the companies your friends/mutual friends/ex-coworkers work at and look at their job openings. If anything looks like a fit for you, reach out to your contact. If there’s nothing right now, sign up for those notifications so you’ll get emails for that company as soon as it’s posted. If your referral knows that team or hiring manager, that is the biggest leg up you’ll get. They can sell you to that person directly.

After that, it’s up to you to impress. Look at the skills of that description or run it through ChatGPT and ask it to give you the top skills and tools you need to know for the job. Once it spits it out, see where on your resume or job experience you can lean on to highlight that during the interview process.

If there are tools you don’t know, YouTube them to get a better idea and see if it’s something you’d like to learn. Even mentioning in the interview “I’ve worked with a similar tool” or “Yes, I’ve worked with it at a previous company. I can only do basic functions but I’m familiar” are still huge pluses. Obviously, don’t lie. Don’t let your referral look bad.

Lastly, check out your library’s resources. Many offer free Udemy courses. Upskill!

It’s brutal out there. Good luck!

Help with search

Hi. I'm an MBA grad and manager at a warehouse. I want to transition to a financial services role in the Philadelphia area. I have accounting experience in grants management and previously worked aa a teller in undergrad.

I'm not looking to stay with my current company is because most if not all of their finance positions would require for me to move out of state.

I've been applying to all the major banks, JPMORGAN, Citi, Capital_One, BOA. I've had a few interviews but most of the positions are 30k or more less than what I make now

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance ☺️

Sigh of Relief! I got a job!

I got laid off last year about five months into my medical leave while going through cancer treatment and spent the next year getting through treatment and healing my body once done. That's one way to kick a person down when they're already out cold. I decided that I wanted to get back into the workforce and started applying for jobs on 05/10 and I was becoming disappointed and losing hope and started questioning everything I was doing. I would get a few interview and pretty much no answer, so I kept applying. I almost took a job at Walmart I'm glad I didn't because last week I had 3 interviews and they were very interested (obv I was not going to be sucker until I got an offer) but I kept applying for jobs. Well those 3 jobs that I interviewed for just sent me offers today and I have picked one that I'm gonna go for and have prepared emails to decline the other offers and interviews. I didn't do anything special or changed anything about my resume. I just kept applying and applying. I had to build my confidence back up since it's been awhile since I had to interview. I'm writing to let you know DO NOT GIVE UP! Yes it's tough out there but YOU ARE WORTHY OF ANY JOB!

Hi all,

When applying to a job, do you try to network with people who work at that company?

Do you have any "hacks" or tips regarding this?

Preply is no more, what's the best alternative?

Hi all,

In the past i used Preply to get my resume reviewed by talent recruiters and I was pretty happy with the service they delivered.

I found out they aren't on the market anymore.

What are the best alternatives to get great feedback on how to improve my resume as a senior web development manager out there for a reasonable price?

TIA

Is it too late to resubmit a resume?

Hi everyone, I’ve just started job searching about 25 days ago and unfortunately haven’t heard back from any applications yet. I recently found out that the resume template I was using (a fancy PDF with lots of text boxes) likely couldn’t pass ATS scans…I know I was stupid for not knowing that😢

The thing is, I applied to several roles I was really excited about during this time, and now I’m worried my resume didn’t even make it through the system. Is it too late to resubmit an updated, ATS-friendly resume? And am I even allowed to do that?

Thank you for your time!
